Dixon mowers-are they any good. Dixon zero turn mowers 30 inch

Just bought a new to me 2006 Dixon SpeedZTR 30

want to do 2 things, install a mulching kit or find a used bagger. Are there used part suppliers for either? I see on one website (dixonmowerparts.com) it is very expensive are there other part or used part sources? Mower both looks and runs well and just testing the cut it looks great and will not be a horrible downgrade cut wise from my 21 inch Honda. Thanks for any tips or ideas.

very little, just very expensive parts. I have put a mulch blade on it and also plugged the deck but it doesnt mow nice enough for my liking. Not sure what I can do at his point, no one seem sto know much and i cant even order parts because there is no model number stamped or affixed anywhere, just a serial number.

Dixon mowers-are they any good?

It seems as though nobody on this board seems to really talk about them, so I thought I’d see what the consensus was on them. I know they‘re not in the league with any of the top mowers out there, but was just curious if they’d be worthy of consideration if the price is right, as they do tend to run on the lower end from what I’ve seen.

Keep in mind, I have yet to buy my first real mower and don’t have a lot to invest until I make some money in the biz first, but will they give me a quality cut? Thanks for any feedback you can give me.

The LCO I used to work for before I went solo had two dixons. A 48″ and A 60″ I think. They were the only ZTR’s he owned and they worked great. Both gear drive. They were used maybe 20 hours a week. Never any problems though, other than a belt once in a while.

I bought my first ztr last June. It was an old 1991 Dixon transaxle drive. I won it on Ebay. I paid 550 for it and had to drive to Houston to pick it up. I got a ticket on the way so that added another 150 to it. :realmad:

The mower looked worse in person than in the picture!! It was in bad shape. Somebody ran that thing in the ground and it still started right up. I replaced the spindles, altenator, battery, bearings and blades, then used it for about a month. It was a 42″. It cut great after I did the maintenance on it. It was loud from the transaxle chains. O yea, I replaced a sprocket too. I ended up selling it for 900. For it to have lasted that long and been so abused and still running says something. Dixon has been in business selling ztr’s since the 70’s. They also have commercial z’s with same warranties and other companies. One thing I liked about this mower was that it weighed only about 350 lbs. You could mow soaking wet lawns with it and not rut them. I was just glad none of the other lco’s saw me on it.

Dixon now has a line of commercial mowers that will hold up to heavy use. I’m not really sure how well they would perform but they are not little residential grade mowers like Dixon is known for. The commercial line has pumps and wheel motors instead of a transaxle and look to be built pretty good. From what i’ve seen the seem to be very resonable also.

Honestly, answer this question, what’s the ratio of Wright, Exmark, Hustler, Dixie Chopper, and Encore mowers to Dixon? Enough said.

from what I’ve read and understood, the man who came up with the Dixie Choppers looked at the Dixons and the Grasshoppers and took ideas from both but the Dixons were around longer.

I own Dixon mowers. Two of them in fact. Both 50″ estate models, which for a while was Dixons commercial model. I have pretty good luck woth both machines. Yeah, they could be built heavier and I have broken a weld or 2, even broke the frame in half this fall on one of them. I have also owned a new Walker mower and sold it cause the Dixons out preformed, climbed, and sped the walker. Also I have owned a 52″ Exmark Lazer zhp. It was almost twice the weight of the dixon models and had the same engine yet it could not really climb a hill for crap. it was so big and cumbersome to drive and manuever that it ended up in the same place as my walker, sitting in the garage collecting dust untill I sold it as well. There is no respect for dixon mowers on here but most of what people see are their 30″, 36″ and 42″ cone drive models with smaller briggs engines. these are homeowner models guys! I personally know dozens of people that use them at home and love them. They have made big changes in all their lines this last year and you can get hydrostatic drive on even the 30″ model now. The true commercial line now has hydraulic pumps and wheel motors and combined with their lighter weight are super easy to manuver and hold hills. one person I saw stated he bought a ’91 unit and it was beat up, well no kidding. go find a ’91 anything and unless it was used for no more than 30 min to an hour a week by joe homeowner it’s going to be beat up. If anyone has questions about Dixons don’t be afraid to ask me, I have used most every model and mine I know inside and out. I have looked at, demoed and even bought others but I can’t find anything more fitting for my lawns than the Dixon.

dixon, mowers-are, they, good, turn, mowers

Oh, forgot to mention, I am bagging all the time. admittedly they are not the best for discharging grass but they do have a full baffel mulch kit for most models now. I put one on last fall and love it.

Dixon SpeedZTR Series – 30, 42, 46, 54, 42 SE, 48 SE

Dixon equipment and parts are no longer available from Shank’s Lawn Equipment.

In 2014, Husqvarna Group, Dixon’s parent company, announced that they would no longer be distributing Dixon products. Since then, the availability of Dixon replacement parts has steadily diminished.

Shank’s Lawn Equipment, a long-time Dixon dealer and a leading source for Dixon parts, will no longer be selling parts for Dixon.

Top speed isn’t the only factor to consider when you want to mow fast: the closer you can get to trees, fences, and landscaping, the less time you’ll have to spend trimming. Dixon’s Speed ZTR mowers are built with homeowners in mind, delivering the same performance as their professional models in a compact platform that works great for lawns of any size and with any number of obstacles.

Easy to Use and Easy to Maintain

Whether this is your first ZTR or your newest one, it doesn’t take much to get accustomed to the controls thanks to dampened lap bars that provide smooth resistance throughout their movement range. This is coupled with a new control panel puts everything next to the operator. Depending on the model, this includes the choke, throttle, blade clutch, starter, fuel gauge and hour meter. Need to change the deck height? There’s a clearly-marked lever within each reach of the operator’s position.

All models use Dixon’s tungsten carbide Fusion blades which last up to twice as long as standard steel blades and can go up to three times as long before needing to be sharpened.

Need to grease the spindles or replace a belt? The foot pan is removable for easy access. Need to clean the deck? Stamped models have a built-in wash port.

Power and Performance

The SpeedZTR 30 comes with a Briggs Stratton Intek XRD that produces 16.5 HP. A B S Professional Series motor rated at 19 HP can be found in the 42, while the 46’s motor is rated at 22 HP.

dixon, mowers-are, they, good, turn, mowers

The 54 and SE mowers use Kawasaki FR Series motors that produce anywhere from 21.5 to 24 HP. These engines come with features usually limited to commercial models including a full pressure lubrication system with a filter.

Motivation is provided by a pair of Hydro-Gear EZT transmissions. They’re maintenance free and have a cooling fan for the pump to ensure long term reliability. Top speed for all Speed ZTR models is 6.5 mph, while the 30 can go up to 3 mph in reverse and all other models can reach 3.5 mph.

Decks

Dixon offers the Speed ZTR with 30, 42, 46 and 54-inch stamped decks. The 30 uses aluminum to help save weight, while the other motors have decks made of steel for better impact resistance. The 42 SE and 48 SE use fabricated decks made from 11 gauge steel and cast iron spindles. The mowing finish quality isn’t quite as good as the stamped decks, but the heavy construction shrugs off impacts, making the SE’s a good choice for rough terrain and areas filled with obstacles. Anti-scalp wheels are included with the 46, 48 and 54-inch wide decks to help them follow hilly terrain without cutting into the soil. All decks are designed for mulching and side ejection with the option of adding a bagging system for clipping collection.

Which deck is right for you? Dixon says the 30-inch deck can handle up to 1.5 acres per hour, 42-inch decks can cut 2.2 acres/hr, 46-inch decks up to 2.4 acres/hr, and the 54-inch deck as much as 2.8 acres/hr. Need to pass through a gate? Total width is 6-7 inches wider than the deck area with the chute down or a bagging system attached.

Dixon started making ZTR mowers in 1974. Back in those days, a mechanical transmission was used instead of the hydraulic units which have become an industry standard today. Because Dixon has been around for a long time, expertise has been developed which is seen in the entire product line. From the first modes “ZRT-1” ( which resembled a cross between a golf cart and a toddler’s pedal toy) to the new “Ram Ultra 72” (which lives up to it’s name in every regard), Dixon mowers have been there for the long haul.

All the Dixon ZTR Lawn Mowers feature the ‘3 in 1’ option, allowing for side discharge, mulch, or rear bagging. The deck cutting height is adjusted manually using a l foot control.

The front axles on all the Dixon ZTR Lawn Mowers is fabricated steel. This is standard on most homeowner ZTR mowers

The frames on all the Dixon ZTR models is fully welded steel ( no bolts and nuts to come loose, compromising the frame strength).

Dixon ZTR Lawn Mowers are available in 3 model series. the Speed ZTR, the Ram, and the Ram Ultra. As the name implies, the Ram Ultra is the top line homeowner series, with the largest engines and most features, including heavy duty pumps and hydraulic wheel motors. There are seven Speed ZTR models available, five Ram models, and three models in the Ram Ultra series.

The Speed ZTR series offers a choice between a single cylinder Briggs and Stratton 16.5 or 19 HP single cylinder engine, a Briggs and Stratton twin cylinder 22 HP engine, a Kawasaki 17 HP single cylinder engine, or a Kohler twin cylinder 24HP engine. All the engines feature overhead valves ( OHV).

Because The Speed ZTR line is designed with price in mind, one model ( Speed ZTR 30) has a manual PTO to engage the cutting blades. The cutting deck is stamped steel on this model, with a single cutting blade. This model has the 16.5 HP single cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine under the hood.

All other Dixon mowers feature an electric PTO, and at least 2 cutting blades under the deck. All models in this series have dual Hydro-Gear transmissions powering the wheels.

Model Speed ZTR 36 comes with a 36” twin blade cutting deck, and is powered by a 19 HP single cylinder engine. Cast iron spindles come standard. Model Speed ZTR 44 has a 44” cutting deck, with either a 22 HP Briggs and Stratton twin cylinder engine, or a 17 HP Kawasaki engine. The Speed ZTR 46 powers a deck that leaves a 46” swath. A Briggs and Stratton 19 HP single cylinder engine comes standard. The drive spindles are cast aluminum, and are mounted on a stamped steel deck, helping to keep the price down.

Next is the Speed ZTR 48, which has a Kohler twin cylinder 24 HP engine. The cutting deck is fabricated steel, with aluminum drive spindles. Largest of the Speed ZTR’s is Speed ZTR 54, which features a 22 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. The cutting deck is stamped steel, with aluminum spindles.

Count on spending between 00 to 00 for the mowers in the Speed ZTR series.

The next series of Dixon ZTR Lawn Mowers include the models in the Ram Series. Here the choice is between either a 24 HP twin cylinder overhead valve ( OHV) Kawasaki, or 26 HP OHV Briggs and Stratton engine. A Kawasaki 21 HP engine is offered on one model (Ram 50 KZ). Note the horsepower ratings are increased in comparison to the Speed ZTR models. The transmissions are either Dual Hydro-Gear or the more robust Kanzaki pump-Parker motor combination.

All the Ram series mowers have an electric PTO to engage the cutting blades, which is switch operated. The cutting deck is made of fabricated steel, which is much more durable than a stamped steel deck. Adjusting the deck height is accomplished by a foot pedal, instead of using a hand lever.

Model Ram 48 comes with a 48” triple blade cutting deck with aluminum spindles, and is powered by the 24 horsepower twin cylinder Kohler engine. The transmission is composed of dual Hydro-Gear units. Model Ram 50 KZ has a 3 blade 50” cutting deck, with the same 24 HP engine Kohler engine. The Kawasaki engine is also an option. The spindles are upgraded to cast iron, and the drive wheels feature the better Kanzaki pumps and Parker motors on the wheels.

Model Ram 50 ZT has a 3 blade 50” cutting deck, and features the 26HP Briggs and Stratton twin cylinder engine. The transmission is dual Hydro-Gear units. Spindles are cast iron.

Top of the Ram line is model Ram 61 K that features the powerful twin cylinder 26 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. The cutting deck is an impressive 60 inches in width, and is fabricated steel construction. Spindles are aluminum. Top of the line Kanzaki pumps and Parker hydraulic motors are a winning combination for the drive system.

Count on spending between 00 to 00 for Dixon ZTR Lawn Mowers in the Ram series.

Top of the line in the homeowner models by Dixon ZTR Lawn Mowers are the Ram Ultra Series. The name hints at something special, and these mowers deliver. Choose between either a 25 or 27 HP twin cylinder overhead valve ( OHV) Kohler engine. The transmissions are top of the line Kanzaki DUP10, with wheel motors.
