Do-it-yourself sled for a tiller

Freight

A cargo sled is the most versatile and practical option. They are more complex than drags, but at the same time they are much simpler than passenger ones. These sleds are distinguished by their large carrying capacity and small dimensions..

Due to the relatively small area of contact with the surface, cargo sleds have a smoother ride than drags – such structures easily slide on their runners, easily overcoming obstacles.

The luggage in them is much better protected. Below are photos of homemade snowmobile sleds.

Due to the fact that their skis are located at a great distance from each other, cargo sleds also boast much more stability than drags..

Each spring, the landlords plant a variety of crops. Here you can see the precision planter.

Cultivators have become very popular among summer residents. By clicking on the link you will learn how to choose a cultivator for a summer residence.

For grinding grain, a special device is used – a grain crusher. With the Zyklon grain crusher it can be done quickly and efficiently..

A standard cargo sled consists of three main elements:

  • frame;
  • runners;
  • flooring.

The frame is the foundation of the entire structure. Runners are attached to the lower part of the frame with the help of racks. Above is the flooring on which the goods will be placed.

For greater convenience and functionality, the frame of the cargo trolley must be equipped with handrails and a covered structure should be placed on it..

In such a box, loads will be reliably protected from snow and wind..

Snowmobile sleds – types of structures and how they work

There are several basic types of snowmobile sleds, and each has advantages and disadvantages. The sled is very versatile in design. They easily attach to all types of snowmobiles. For example, to the snowmobile Yamaha, Russian mechanics, Ermak, Viking 540, Dingo 150, BRP and Varyag 550.

In order to choose the type that suits you, you need to consider several factors:

  • tracks and routes along which you need to navigate, features of snow cover and terrain;
  • type of transported goods;
  • driving style.

For more information on snowmobile sleds, see

Passenger

Passenger sleds are rare. They are usually a housing made of plastic or plywood, mounted on runners..

For greater convenience of passengers, the structure of the passenger sled can be sprung, and lighting and heating can be arranged in the cabin..

It is not easy to find them on sale, however, such designs are sometimes made by winter anglers and other lovers of outdoor recreation in the cold season..

A passenger sleigh can carry one or even several passengers, therefore, having only one snowmobile, the owner of this design can take a large company to the snowy nature.

The main disadvantages are the large dimensions and weight of the structure. Because of this, passenger sleds can only be coupled to powerful, multi-powered snowmobiles..

Necessary materials

What to make snowmobile sled skis from? Consider the construction of a simple version of a snowmobile sled from a metal pipe. In order to make such a construction, you will need:

  • profiled metal pipe 20 × 20, wall thickness – 2-3 mm;
  • round plastic pipes for making skis;
  • Metal sheet;
  • plywood sheets with a thickness of 10-15 millimeters and more.

A sled with a metal frame is much more reliable and durable than structures made of plastic pipes.

Their disadvantage is their greater weight, but they will serve for a long time and trouble-free. The only thing that may be needed during the operation of such a structure is the periodic replacement of plastic skis, which will wear out over time or may be damaged when hitting stones and roots.

Volokushi – description and dimensions of plastic snowmobile sleds

Sledges – the easiest option.

They have several advantages:

  • compactness and low weight;
  • simplicity and speed of loading and unloading luggage;
  • the body of the drags does not freeze.

However, the drags have a serious drawback – due to the design features, their front part is often damaged. This type of sleigh is inexpensive, and it is impractical to do it yourself..

Making homemade snowmobile sleds with your own hands

  • Weld a rectangular metal frame from four pipes.
  • If you want to provide the structure with high strength and make it possible to carry heavy loads, make a few additional crossbars.
  • Weld vertical racks to the frame, their number depends on the length of the sleigh, the best option is from 2 to 5 racks on each side. The more there are, the more reliable the design will be..
  • Make skis from the pipes. It is better if they are flat – in this case, the sled will fall through the snow much less. To straighten pipes, you need to use a hair dryer..
  • If such a tool is not at hand, you can also heat the pipes over an open fire to level the pipes, but this must be done with caution. After heating, the pipe must be placed under the board, the load must be placed on top and left to cool. After that, it is necessary to make an upward bend in front of each pipe..
  • Attach the runners to the frame. In order for the sled to pass through the snow as easily as possible, the top of each ski must reach straight to the level of the frame and be attached to the front of it..
  • Also attach the drawbar to the front of the frame. In order to do this, reinforce the attachment point with a metal sheet and cut a sleeve into it..
  • After that, the plywood flooring must be fixed to the frame on the frame – and the sled is ready for use..

Drags and sleds for a snowmobile: how to do it yourself

A snowmobile sled is a must for comfortable long-distance winter travel. Having loaded all the necessary luggage into them, you can go hunting or fishing or on any other trip..

A sled is a great addition to a wardrobe trunk, in which you can put everything you need, but you cannot pack large-sized heavy loads. Thanks to their use, the capabilities of the snowmobile owner are significantly expanded..

If you also want to become the happy owner of such a design, it is not necessary to buy them at all – it can be done quite easily with your own hands..

Since self-made sleds for a snowmobile with their own hands will be used in winter, it is necessary to carefully approach the choice of materials and components that should tolerate the lowest temperatures well..

In addition, it must be borne in mind that the structure will be exposed to blows quite often, therefore, they must also be very strong..

If the choice of materials and components is not enough careful, the sled can simply fall apart right on the go after a few months of operation, or even earlier..

If you decide to make not a cargo, but a passenger sled, you need to approach the issue very carefully. At the same time, safety should come first – this applies both to the choice of materials and the care with which all parts must be connected..

Snowmobile travel speeds can be high and obstacles are usually encountered unexpectedly, so you need to think through all the important points so that the design of your passenger sled is as reliable as possible..

The presence of a sled provides many additional opportunities, while making such a structure with your own hands is not so difficult. Its construction will not require large expenditures and will not take much time..

It is important to take into account that there is no universal sled for all occasions – which means that ideally it is worth having a set of several different designs, which will be enough for any situation..

If you make them with your own hands, carefully approach the choice of materials and the process of work itself. In this case, the sled you make will be reliable and durable and will serve you for many years..

Winter Attachment Options

Rotary snow plows are a design based on an auger housed in a metal closed housing. As the auger rotates, the snow flows to the impeller and then to the pipe nozzle. The mass is ejected in a directional manner, at a distance of several meters. The track remains clean.

Standard snow nozzles are made in the form of a flat metal knife – a smaller version of the dozer blade. The cutting edge of the tool is covered with a rubber pad so as not to damage paving slabs, paving stones, and other delicate coatings.

Utility brushes effectively deal with freshly fallen, loose snow and allow you to clean the surface almost to perfect condition. Soft bristles are safe for coatings.

Depending on the weather conditions, pneumatic wheels, lugs or tracks can be installed on the tiller. Tracks will provide maximum cross-country ability on snow. Pneumatic wheels are convenient for driving on hard surfaces. And the lugs will help break the thick ice crust.

Turning a Tiller into a Snowmobile

Let’s start with a question. Why Tiller? Everything is explained very easily. Autumn came and gradually all field work came to naught. tiller, like a bear was sent into hibernation. It is clearly not needed until spring, but no. In winter, he, too, can faithfully serve the owner, facilitating his work. It will help in the delivery of firewood from the forest, water from the river, and simply facilitate movement on the snow cover. Will make it fast and comfortable.

do-it-yourself, sled, tiller

Where do we start? From the engine. As a basic unit for our snowmobile, the Neva middle class tiller, equipped with a rear drawbar and manual control, is perfect. Its engine, at a fairly low cost, is assembled from high-quality Japanese-made parts. In addition, it is equipped with forced air cooling, which will be very useful for a future snowmobile. As a result, we get a unit with a capacity of up to 7 hp..

To create a snowmobile on your own, you will need a pipe bender, a welding machine, an angle grinder, a power unit and a number of purchased spare parts that will be needed during the assembly process.

Snowmobile design

To correctly assemble an all-terrain vehicle from a tiller, you first need to depict it on the diagram. Typically, a structure consists of two parts: driven and driven. The first named part consists of the following elements:

  • shock absorbers
  • steering column;
  • runners.

The leading part consists of a power unit, drive and frame. After creating the drawing, you can start welding the frame. For greater strength, it is worth using pipes that are used to create frames for motorcycles. But you can also use products that are used for the construction of a water supply system. You can give the pipes the desired shape using a pipe bender.

To avoid mistakes when creating a frame, you should first fix the elements of the system with spot welding. Only then can the joints be welded with a continuous seam..

After creating the frame, brackets are welded to it, which are necessary to secure the engine, runners and seat.

Caterpillars

Snowmobile tracks can be made with your own hands using the following materials:

  • conveyor belts;
  • motorcycle chains;
  • water pipes.

The speed of a homemade snowmobile can be about 60 km / h, so safety precautions must be observed while driving.

For light snowmobiles, the tiller is usually made from a conveyor belt and roller chain. To create such tracks, you do not need to have any skills or have specialized equipment..

To extend the life of the tape, its edges are stitched with fishing line. In this case, the step between the stitches should be equal to 1 cm. This will prevent the tape from loosening. To form a ring, the tape is sewn from the ends.

The choice of the thickness of the tape used depends on the capacity of the unit being created. The higher it is, the thicker the tape should be..

Preparing the tiller for the season after winter storage

  • If the conservation was carried out with filled in gasoline, then in the spring the fuel is completely drained and changed – it could oxidize over the winter.
  • The candle is screwed in and its stability is checked..
  • Open the fuel supply valve.
  • Turn on the ignition.
  • Start the engine with a starter. After starting, smoke may appear – oil will burn out from the surfaces of parts.
  • After warming up the engine, they start work.

Homemade all-terrain vehicle snowmobile from Tiller

The simplest homemade all-terrain vehicle is a snowmobile made from an ordinary tiller: a photo and a detailed description of how to make a homemade product.

As you know, the tiller is used for processing vegetable gardens: plowing, cultivation, hilling and other work. But craftsmen have come up with another application of this technique – this is an alteration into a homemade all-terrain vehicle-snowmobile. As a result, you can make excellent transport for off-road travel..

The process of converting a tiller into an all-terrain vehicle is as follows:

To increase the tiller‘s cross-country ability, the first step is to replace its standard wheels with larger wheels, for example, put disks and tires from the car. Then the wheels need to be wrapped with tracks from the snowmobile. To do this, the caterpillar is cut along the circumference of the wheel and pulled over the wheel, the edges of the caterpillar must be connected with powerful brackets or bolted connections. The tracks can be made homemade from the conveyor belt, and the tracks can be cut from a metal corner and bolted to the belt.

After such alteration, it is enough to attach a sled or a trailer adapter to the tiller, and the all-terrain vehicle is ready.!

Homemade all-terrain vehicle from a tiller, confidently moves on shallow snow and ice. Good cross-country ability is provided by large wheels and track protectors..

Do-it-yourself sledges

Due to the simplicity of the design, the range of materials for the sled is enormous..

You can use everything that is lying around in the garage or in the country.

Below we will show the most simple and interesting home-made solutions collected by craftsmen from all over the world..

Wood is a versatile and inexpensive material for making sleds. Quite heavy construction, but versatile and maintainable in almost any conditions.

Due to the simple design, there is no point in drawing drawings, since easier to make from what is at hand. The size and model of the sled should also be considered for your snowmobile. A too heavy trailer may not be able to handle a snowball.

An interesting version of a flat-bottomed sled can be made taking small-diameter sewer pipes as a basis. We fasten the pipes into a single array and get a very strong bottom with guides. This version of the sleigh behaves well in motion and is not afraid of the roots of trees and stumps that come across under the snow..

Sleigh drawing:

There is one flaw in this version of the sled – there are not enough ski guides.

The guides are necessary for the normal handling of the sled, because on flat skis the sled skids a lot when cornering.

In the factory version, a ski with a guide looks like this:

If you do it yourself, then you can weld a small corner or a steel rod of a small section to a metal ski (about 10mm for a ski with a width of 20cm).

Manufacturing features

In winter, when rivers and lakes freeze, and you need to transport cargo off-road, you cannot do without a motorized towing vehicle. It is also called “motorized dog” because of the separate location of the sleds – drags and the transport itself, it resembles the entire transport mechanism of a dog sled. What is a motorized towing vehicle? This is a towing vehicle coupled to a sled. Volokushi is a cart made of two fastened poles, the front ends of which serve as shafts.

A snowmobile and a motorized towing vehicle are often confused. A snowmobile is mainly used for recreation in the mountains, for hunting and fishing, and a motorized towing vehicle is designed to simplify the life of the inhabitants of the North, and not only, it can become an indispensable assistant in large production or in agriculture. A motorized towing vehicle has a maximum speed of 40 km per hour, which cannot be said about snowmobiles, whose speed reaches 200 km per hour..

You can drive the first one both sitting on a trailer and standing on a sleigh.

It is also necessary to take into account the fact that the motorized dog does not have brakes. The difference between a snowmobile and a motorized towing vehicle is that the drags for the snowmobile have an additional section where the load can be placed, and the sleds of the motorized towing vehicle are standard or look more like a small plastic trough. A huge plus of a motorcycle towing vehicle is that a barrier fence or, in other words, a bump stop protects the driver and cargo from small stones, and the passability in deep snow is better than that of a snowmobile. He can’t trample the snow so hard.

And the cost of a motorized towing vehicle is less than the price of a snowmobile. But it should be borne in mind that the drags, although they are factory made and made of frost-resistant and durable plastic alloy, are still not as durable as metal. Drags are subject to wear and tear, and even worse – they can be broken on stones or on the asphalt when the snow melts. Even if the snow has not started to melt, you can easily damage the vehicle on any obstacles on the road..

Smitty sled build 1hr DIY SIMPLE AND STRONG

Bolts can also loosen over time and loosen the connections of the entire mechanism. In this regard, you can also make yourself a sled for a motor dog. When developing with your own hands, you should take into account all these points and make them for yourself. One of the features of making homemade sleds is that they are made of plywood and metal profiled pipes. For ease of movement on runners, a metal frame is specially installed to make the sled slide easier on the snow.

How I made a pusher from a motorized towing vehicle with my own hands

The last time I shared my joy with you about making my first pusher, I promised to give you the technical details. Well, let’s try.

I was terribly lucky, and I had an old frame from the Minsk motorcycle on my farm, so I didn’t have to invent the most complex and crucial unit – the hinge for connecting the front trough and the towbar’s drawbar. I think that even a bicycle fork is suitable here, since the loads in this unit are negligible. From my rusty frame, I simply cut off the head tube along with all the giblets at the root and put it aside for now..

After that, I had to decide on the design of the drawbar. I thought a lot, figured it out, and read about what other people make. And in all designs, both handicraft and serial, the drawbar was pivotally attached to the towing vehicle. That is, the towing vehicle itself could swing freely. This, of course, is very good, and the pusher with this method of connecting it to the trough, in theory, should have better cross-country ability. But firstly, the unit turns out to be very cumbersome and difficult to manufacture (in a good non-collective farm performance); and secondly, such a connection requires very accurate calculations of the weight distribution of the structure, since the towing vehicle must travel horizontally through the snow, as far as possible, without burying either nose or stern..

As for me, as a lazy person with experience in building several different boats, I understood perfectly well that things go smoothly only on paper. In reality, however, any calculations are broken on the imperfection of operating conditions: a boat with a perfectly adjusted waterline floats on uneven, undulating water; and the towing vehicle, respectively, drives on uneven and loose snow. In general, any such self-made design is always solid assumptions. And that’s why I decided to fix the drawbar rigidly to the towing vehicle. Moreover, my towing vehicle is shortened (1.2m in length), and the slopes for it are not as critical as for long models.

What are the advantages? The first is simplicity and lightness; the second is the complete indifference of the entire structure to the weight distribution, that is, it does not matter at all where the center of gravity of the towing vehicle, of the entire pusher is, and how the supports (caterpillar and trough) react to all this. The towing vehicle will always be located approximately horizontally, plus or minus bast shoes. With this, I proceeded directly to the manufacture.

For the drawbar, I used the most common profile tube 50x25x2. I welded it at right angles to the head tube I had. It seemed to me that some kerchiefs would not be in the way, but I did not make them, and in the end, it seems, I was not mistaken. This connection does not experience heavy loads, and such a single seam is quite enough there. Next, I prepared 2 corners 40×40, drilling 3 fastening holes in it: using these corners, the drawbar will be attached to the towing vehicle. The corners were simply welded to the tubes of his frame. It’s time to measure the desired length of the drawbar and figure out the location of the trough.

As a trough, I took the “Fishing sledge CP 3”, I liked their shape – long, narrow, with an acute angle of rise of the bottom in the bow. Just like a boat or a big ski. I simply attached this trough to the towing vehicle in such a way that at any turns it is guaranteed not to cling to the caterpillar. In this case, the pivot and tilt axes, in my opinion, should have been somewhere in the region of 2/3 of the total length of the trough, if you count from the nose. I marked this place with a marker.

Move on. The trough should swing, and for this, hinges are needed at the lower end of the fork stays. Here it is also necessary to determine the height of this fork. And the height should be such that, in the unloaded state, the entire structure stands horizontally. Having estimated approximately the height of the future hinge, I cut off the feathers. I made bushings from them, which I welded to the ends. As silent blocks in these bushings, I wonderfully pressed rubber bands from the shock absorbers of classic Zhiguli. Now it was possible to drill the drawbar in the place of its attachment to the towing vehicle, cut off the excess and start making the trough frame.

Well, here, too, everything is in place and by sight. We bend the curved longitudinal pipes, cut everything off, use the clamps to collect it right on the trough, grab it, and then, separately, scald it. We sit on an imaginary seat, which in my case stands so that my back is somewhere at the level of the front edge of the caterpillar. And after you have sat down, it immediately becomes clear where we will have a footrest, which will also serve as an additional element of frame rigidity; weld it.

Next, you need to make a beam for attaching the trough to the fork hinges. Well, you can see everything here in the photographs. Such is the squiggle with ears, which is welded to the frame from above, and from the bottom is additionally untied at the bottom of the trough. Almost all! It remains to paint new parts, rivet the frame to the trough with blind rivets and do something else on the little things.

The trough must be hemmed with runners that will protect the hull from abrasion, and in addition, it is important to make steel undercuts that, like skates, will help us steer on packed snow or ice. I made the undercuts from the same 40×40 corner, there are 2 of them, and they are 50cm long. It is to them that the lower part of the aforementioned beam is attached. The undercuts, like the semi-balanced rudders of a boat, I also positioned so that in front of the pivot axis there was about 30% of their length. All! Can be collected and finished to the ideal!

I had to finish many little things. For example, I installed shields around the engine to protect the variator from snow getting into it. Many people prefer full-fledged hoods for the entire power plant, but it seems overkill to me. My shin guards almost completely eliminate the belt getting wet even when overturning in the notorious “powder” What else? A very important point is the heated intake and exhaust system. I initially took air from a hot muffler, but the muffler on the Lifan is somewhat stupid, and part of the exhaust gases, in any case, got into the intake, severely disrupting the engine’s operation. To prevent this from happening, I removed the exhaust deflector and turned the muffler itself 90 degrees, sideways. Everything immediately worked just fine. True, the air intake had to be modified and it became a little scary, but it doesn’t matter – the maximum speed, as they say, does not affect.

Well, actually, that’s all. You can ride. By the way, regarding the fears that the trough will not be able to tilt forward because of the straight drawbar, I can say that in reality it tilts where it should and how it should. The fact is that when operating in loose snow, the back of the trough is loaded by the weight of the driver’s body, and it is always lifted up a little. At the same time, there is always enough space between its tailgate and the drawbar to swing the nose down. This business rides just fine, weighs relatively little, is easily disassembled and assembled during transportation, and generally brings a lot of fun..

And here you can see how we ride it:

Snowmobile sled made of plastic pipes

An interesting and affordable option for a snowball sled made of PP pipes. These pipes are used for water supply and sewerage.

For the manufacture of the frame, water pipes of 25-30mm are suitable.

For cutting, you can use special scissors, or a knife and a hammer (if they are not rich in special tools)

To connect the parts, we use a soldering iron for PP pipes. By the way, you can also use home-made devices based on an e-iron or even simply heating a sting from a piece of metal pipe on a gas stove. The main thing is not to overheat the tip, since the special soldering iron does not have a high temperature.

Do-it-yourself snowmobile sled

A sled or sled for a snowmobile is simply irreplaceable for fishing and hunting. It is also a very practical and convenient solution for working in deep snow conditions. For example, to transport firewood from the forest home.

Making a sled for a motorized towing vehicle with your own hands

One of the unusual wonders of technology, which is often used by fishermen and hunters, as well as people working in the Ministry of Emergency Situations or agriculture, is a motorized towing vehicle. This type of transport has been created for traveling through snow-covered areas, as well as for transporting goods. But how can these goods be transported without a sled? That is why we will consider creating a drag sled for a motorized towing vehicle in this article..

Do-it-yourself sledges

Homemade scraps, with the right approach, can be much stronger than factory ones. Despite the fact that the sled is made from a tough frost-resistant plastic alloy, it is still not as durable as metal. Plastic drags can be rubbed or broken on stone, asphalt and other hard obstacles and surfaces. Also, are the metal hitch mountings of commercial models usually of poor quality? often the bolts are unscrewed and the connections are loosened, which can lead to the loss of the sled.

When developing your own home-made scraper, you can take into account all these nuances. Recently, a very popular model of homemade drag sleds has become a sled made of metal lightweight profiled pipe and plywood. Their device, as befits drags, is very simple: a metal frame mounted on runners.

In order to make homemade sledges, make a frame. To do this, you will need a welding machine, an angle grinder, drills and the necessary materials: a profiled tube for the frame and drawbar, as well as plywood.

Take a clothed square shaped tube, say, 20 by 20 mm in size and 2 mm thick (at least). You can make a frame with your own hands measuring 1900 x 300 x 900 mm. In front, you need to make a rounding for better cross-country ability of the sled. There you also need to weld a steel sheet in order to give the whole structure more stability. After the skis and the drawbar are ready, the body is sheathed with dense plywood. It is important that the distance between the crossbeams of the body does not exceed 400 mm and the plywood, bending, does not break..

For making a drawbar with your own hands? a steel hitch between the towing vehicle and the drags? use two steel lightweight pipes with a diameter of 20 mm and a total length of 1700 mm. For the strength of the connection, you need to make two crossbeams with a cross section of 20 mm. To make a drawbar with your own hands, they use a rectangular pipe, but we took a round pipe. In order for the coupler to withstand additional loads and be protected from bends, it is necessary to weld on a metal sheet into which a bushing with a diameter of 25 × 30 mm is cut. Homemade toboggan skis can be made from sheet metal or use long plastic pipes..

In a metal frame with your own hands, you can weld metal fasteners for the seat, which is not available in the purchased models of the sleigh. You can make sure that, if necessary, for example, to tow a broken motorized dog, the seat can be easily removed. Depending on your needs, you can make the sides lower or higher, modify the hitch with the towing vehicle and provide for attachments for fishing tackle, etc. Well, plus to everything, home-made sledges? this is an opportunity to save a little.

So, as we have seen, there is nothing difficult in making the sled itself. You just need to have the necessary materials, tools and desire at hand. Thus, you can avoid flaws and weaknesses of purchased models. In addition, homemade scraps are much stronger than purchased plastic ones..

If you do it yourself, then you can weld a small corner or a steel rod of a small section to a metal ski (about 10mm for a ski with a width of 20cm).

Sleigh for self-skiing

This is a more complex option in terms of design. But it’s worth it. Thanks to the use of skis, the sled becomes more stable and more stable at high speeds. Also, when using skis, the sled body itself does not come into contact with the snow cover, which means it will last much longer.

Option 1 – steel frame and skis.

Strong and bulky snowmobile sled.

For the frame, a square tube with a diameter of 20mm x 20mm is used.

The pipe is cut by an angle grinder and connected by welding.

Front sheet made of 2mm thick metal. Serves for protection from snow and small obstacles. Welded to the frame by welding.

Skis are made of sheet metal, along the edges with additional stiffeners (made using a bending machine)

A rigid hitch (drawbar) is welded from a 20x20mm profile, like the main frame of the sled.

A spring is used at the end for shock absorption during acceleration and deceleration. Without a spring, you run the risk of rapid wear on the towbar and its attachment to the snowmobile..

Sledges

This is the simplest type of sleigh. At its core, it is a trough attached to a vehicle. Volokushi are well suited for transporting large bulky goods at low speed using a snowmobile, but most often a motorized towing vehicle (motorized dogs).

The bottom is flat, which ensures minimum pressure on the area and allows you to move on loose and deep snow.

Consider a few of the simplest and most common sleigh options.

Simple scraper for a motorized dog:

Despite all the simplicity of the design .

More comfortable and roomy sleds for a snowmobile that can withstand high speeds, such as:

This option has, the drawbar is still about 5-6 thousand rubles.

What would you roughly understand the dimensions of the drags below is a drawing of these sleds with dimensions:

The cost of purchased sleds is quite high, and the durability of the drags leaves much to be desired. Therefore, it is worth considering making them with your own hands, since the design is quite simple.

How to make sled skis

For the manufacture of runners, it is convenient to use a sewer pipe with a diameter of 100 mm.

How to straighten your snowmobile ski tube:

Carefully cut lengthwise and heat with an industrial hair dryer or a burner (with an open fire, you need to be very careful not to melt the pipe).

We straighten it with the help of two boards (pieces of plywood), placing them on the floor and pressing them down with a foot or a heavy object. You can also use a vise or press machine.

It will not be possible to heat the entire length of the pipe right away, so we warm it up and unbend it in small sections of 30-40 cm. This way you won’t need much effort..

There is one simple trick to fix the pipe on the runners..

The mounting method is suitable for all types and materials of skis.

We push the heated pipe from above, thanks to this, it fits tightly into place and immediately we fix it with self-tapping screws.

The considered option is ideal if you need to sheathe metal skis with a plastic pipe.

PP tube skis

You can also make skis from several pipes for a water supply with a diameter of 25mm

do-it-yourself, sled, tiller

We lay in parallel and fasten with long bolts or pins:

This design is less robust, but has a significant advantage over a solid HDPE pipe..

The tubes act as guides, due to this, the skis behave more stable when cornering.

I also use a combined option, when a supporting frame is made from PP tubes, and only then a large pipe is hemmed:

In this article, we tried to collect suitable ideas for making a do-it-yourself sled for a snowmobile. What sled do you have? share your creations in the comments!

Preparing to make homemade snowmobiles from a tiller

Do-it-yourself snowmobile from a tiller – drawing
The scheme of a homemade snowmobile from a tiller can be conditionally divided into a leading and a driven part. The leading part includes a frame, a power unit and a drive, and the driven part consists of runners, shock absorbers and a steering part..

After creating a drawing, on its basis from cardboard you need to make a layout of the future car.

Before drawing a drawing, you need to decide for what purposes the machine will be used. A lot of nuances depend on this, which will need to be visually displayed on the diagram. And also, starting from the options for using the snowmobile, structural elements are selected.

Another feature of homemade snowmobiles is the installation of an engine and gearbox. These elements are located on the leading part of the future device..

Snowmobile from Tiller – how to make decent transport for the winter?

But it turns out that the tiller may have a second life. From it “Kulibins” can make an ATV, a motorized dog, a swamp vehicle or a snowmobile. Exactly how to make a snowmobile from a tiller, we will try to figure it out, about this below, join.

Many owners of tilers for the winter hide their equipment in sheds or garages, not suspecting that they can open a “second front” by converting the tiller into a snowmobile for the winter.

Four principles for making an ATV tire yourself

  • 1. Two discs made of sheet metal are bridged with each other. Then they are attached to the sleeve and the camera is put on them. It is fixed with sections of the conveyor belt. For greater protection of the camera, a protector from another camera is sometimes used.
  • 2. Attach one disc to the bushing. Then jumpers are attached to it, to which the side rings are riveted or welded.
  • 3. The construction is similar to the previous construction principle. In this case, when installing the center disc, a spoke made of pipe or sheet metal is required..
  • 4. The fourth principle is to mount two discs on the hub, like a wheel disc from a scooter.

This concludes. Of all the options, you can use the one you like best. You just need to decide what is the purpose of the machine and get down to business!

How to make a wheeled snowmobile from a tiller

To convert a tiller into a snowmobile on wheels, it must have a lot of power. Otherwise, the unit simply will not be able to move on slippery ice or snow..

Another important consideration is the design of the frame and drive of the machine. Here it is necessary to make sure that each wheel is equipped with its own drive. This design simplifies management and ensures safety in all conditions. You can make a snowmobile with three or four wheels, but it should be borne in mind that in the first case, the car will be less stable..

To increase the stability of the vehicle, you can combine wheels and wide skis.

General construction rules

Homemade products for driving on snow are varied in appearance, size, layout, power and even in the principle of movement. But in each version there are nodes that provide the properties necessary for snowmobiles, namely:

  • Don’t fall into the snow.
  • Move on the surface with minimal friction and in the desired direction.

Obviously, the probability of sinking into the snow and the friction force depend on the weight of the unit, the contact area, the shape of the contact surface with the snow. Of course, the condition of the snow has its effect, but which must be taken into account.

To fulfill the main purpose, the following components are always present in the design of a snowmobile:

  • supports in the form of runners, wheels or tracks to support the weight of the structure with passengers on the snow surface,
  • engine with gearbox, transmission device and fuel tank,
  • propellers pushing the structure along the snow surface,
  • steering gear that changes the vector of interaction with the snow to turn,
  • frame on which all units are mounted.

Making homemade products simplifies the availability of parts from specialized equipment. Spare parts from Buran snowmobiles or any tools and vehicles with a motor of scooters, motorcycles, tillers are often taken. The area for creativity when creating each node is huge. There are many varied and proven solutions for every detail..

Homemade mini snowmobile option

In rural areas and in the suburbs, in the winter season, it is very difficult to do without a special device that allows you to quickly overcome snowy roads. There, homemade mini-snowmobiles are used for these purposes. They have many advantages over conventional machines:

Snowmobile layout

  • Greatest maneuverability and cross-country ability.
  • Less fuel consumption.
  • Simpler design.
  • Save space in the garage.
  • Available materials are used in the manufacture.
  • Small size reduces the risk of falling into loose snow.

If you carefully think over the design and all the nuances, then for the manufacture of a mini-snowmobile, minimal costs will be required..

What wheels to put on a snowmobile with a tiller engine

When making a snowmobile with a tiller engine, in most cases, low pressure wheels are made by hand. What makes snowmobile tires so special? They have a relatively low weight, high elasticity, and the pressure on the ground falls within small limits. The large rolling radius and good characteristics make the snowmobile economical and excellent cross-country ability..

The large volume of chambers gives the structure a high permeability. And by filling the space inside the discs with foam, the adhesion of dirt and snow on the snowmobile will be noticeably reduced. The simplicity of the chassis design and the availability of materials avoids the hassle of making a snowmobile.
