Hello folks, I have a JD LA110 riding lawn mower. I bought it new in 2007. It seems like I have to replace the battery every 3 years. Does that sound about right? Seems like they should last a bit longer than that. Anything I can do to get more life out of these batteries? I’m on a pretty tight budget so instead of buying a new battery right now, I use a charger every time I need to mow. I set it on manual charge and it takes about 10 minutes and then I can start it. Is there any harm in doing this weekly? I mean am I in danger of blowing up the battery? Thanks in advance, Jeremy

I found that the little motorcycles and lawn tractor batteries don’t last long. 3 years about average. The best thing you can do is not let it completely discharge over the winter, that is, give it a recharge every few weeks over the winter. (Easy to say, easy to forget.) I have a habit of toping the batteries off every spring with water (demineralized, if available), but I’m wondering if that is really good for them or not.

All batteries can produce explosive hydrogen and oxygen byproducts when charging, but I’m not sure if there’s an increased danger from what you’re doing. I don’t think there’s much harm to what you’re doing, but eventually the battery will probably hold less and less charge, and you’re be relying on the charger to start more and more. I don’t know what effect it has on the tractor charging system if eventually a couple of the battery cells shortNow I’m curious. must research

Check the electrolyte level once a month, and add distilled water when needed.

I switched to AGM, sealed, no corrosion. Cost more, but last a lot longer.

I use a Battery Minder Charger and I have gotten well over 6 years on mine. The last one I took in for a test when the tractor would not start and they said it was bad. Purchased a new battery and went home with the new battery and the old battery. A couple of weeks later my Battery Minder battery charger came in. I hooked it up to the old battery and forgot about it. When fall came and I was putting the Snow Blower on the tractor I saw the old battery and decided to take it in and see how it was. The parts store hooked it up to their tester and said it was like brand new. I bought a couple more Battery Minders and will now keep them on all of my equipment when not in use. I purchased the permanent pig tails and now just plug them into the charger when I am putting the tractors away for the day.

Wait a second. You bought a John Deere and you’re on a budget? Hope you never have to buy any paint.

Seriously, I depend on Battery Tender brand for all my lawn and garden equipment.

Consider yourself fortunate if you learned this lesson on a tractor. I learned it the hard way after pushing off into the Missouri river, a large river with a strong current, solo on a brand new personal watercraft only to find out the battery would not start the engine! Lucky for me I am Mr. Safety and I brought swim fins. Yes, there were worse situations like the day I clogged up the jet pump 20 miles from my launch. Thankfully it was UP river from my launch. Again, Mr. Safety.

I have a DR brand weed trimmer on wheels with electric start. The electric start seems to be an after thought for the Briggs and Stratton engine because it does not recharge the battery during operation. When I put the DR back on the Battery Tender the red light is illuminated and sometimes it even flashes green for a much longer time than the my younger John Deere 2305.

Just make sure that you are getting one that automatically turns off or on so that it doesn’t overcharge the battery. There are several good brands, so shop around.

How to Charge a John Deere Mower Battery

The best and safest way to charge your John Deere mower’s battery is with a portable charger. Depending on the voltage of your mower’s battery, a jump from a car could seriously damage it. A portable charger can cost upward of 100. It will not only charge your John Deere mower’s battery, but your car’s as well. Plug it into the wall overnight and you can store it in your trunk for emergencies.

Clean off any corrosion on the cables or terminals. Put on a sturdy pair of work gloves. Then dip a toothbrush into a solution that is equal parts baking soda and water and scrub the area clean.

Loosen and remove the cables connected to your John Deere mower battery’s terminals. Remove the negative cable first, followed by the positive.

Attach the portable charger. First make sure that the charger is fully charged, in the “off” position and not plugged into the outlet. Next, connect the portable charger’s positive cable clamp to the positive terminal of your car battery. Then connect the negative cable clamp somewhere on the frame of the John Deere mower’s frame away from the battery.

Set the charger’s voltage switch to 12 volts (For most models. Check your owner’s manual to be sure). Then set the amp switch to between 9 and 16, depending on the make and model of your John Deere Mower.

John Deere expert predicts battery-powered lawn mower demand will ‘rapidly escalate’

Might we Americans see more electric-powered lawn mowers in the near future?

As more battery-powered home improvement products make their way to market, John Deere’s mass channel business manager Sean Sundberg predicted in a recent interview with Fox News Digital that battery-powered riding lawn mowers, specifically, could be getting some serious attention.

“It’s a great trend,” he said, sharing his opinion. “We’ll see the adoption curve rapidly escalate … It’s simplicity of use with the machine.”

For the average consumer who may be mowing half an acre of grass, Sundberg said he’s optimistic the machine will be reliable.

“I don’t think there will be any durability issues,” he said.

“You plug it in, you go take care of your business … just like you normally would with a fuel-option machine. So it’ll be very similar in operation and I think the performance will be there as well.”

For larger property owners, having the right machine and trusting that it can get the job done is important, which all comes down to finding the right battery with enough power.

There’s already been a greater transition in the home improvement space to battery-powered machines, including walk-behind mowers and hand-held tools.

“[We’ve] definitely seen an adoption rate increasing rapidly in the consumer space,” Sundberg said. “Because it is super easy.”

A handful of brands such as EGO, Skil and Kobalt have released electric products like leaf blowers, weed whackers and power saws.

The John Deere expert said the increased interest battery-powered tool interest is due to its simplicity, since there’s no messing around with fuel — saving today’s consumer a few extra bucks at the pump.

Sundberg hinted that even though John Deere does not currently have any battery-powered tools on the market, there may be a few models coming down the road.

“We do not have a battery-powered machine in market … yet,” he said.

Worth keeping in mind, to be sure: While some major cities are already seeing their lights go off due to electricity use overload, grid operators and energy advocates gave a warning to states that are closing their coal-fired power plants even quicker than they can build new ones, FOX Business has reported.

“Any plans to remove nuclear plants or coal power plants or natural gas plants that are slated to be closed, that has to be completely suspended,” Power the Future executive director Daniel Turner told FOX Business’ Jeff Flock on Tuesday.

Eighty coal-fired power plants are slated to close across 14 states in the next six years, Flock mentioned in his report — posing a threat, as some blackouts have already begun and coal and nuclear power still source 41% of the country’s electricity, according to the Energy Information Administration.
