For this reason, a situation may arise that is very similar to a spring break: the handle is pulled out of the starter, but does not come back. However, loosen the starter screw this problem disappears. It is easy to fix such a starter malfunction: just select a spring of the same diameter, but slightly longer, or put an additional washer. If we just loosely tighten the screw, then it will twist and fly out, and this will already increase the likelihood of a spring break, since the pulley will not fit snugly enough to the starter housing.

We screwed the coil to the body, now we need to tighten the spring. Before this, it is necessary to remove the starter handle from the rope in advance. If the knot is too strong, then you can simply cut it off or try to untie it, for example, using a pair of pliers. This is so that after you have cocked the spring, you can thread the rope through the hole in the starter cover. The other end of the rope must be fixed in the reel even before it is installed in the body; the rope does not need to be wound onto the pulley before pulling the spring. do this after.

Before cocking the spring, estimate how many revolutions of the reel the rope should be wound. If the experience is not enough, then you can rotate the pulley itself with both hands, but the rope will get in the way, which can create additional inconveniences. After the required number of revolutions has been made, we pass the end of the rope through the hole in the starter cover, put on the handle, and fasten it with a knot. It is more convenient to do this together with a partner, so that the end of the cable does not accidentally reel inside the starter.

By the way, on your own, you can make some modifications to the design of the starter in order to more reliably fix the end of the spring inside the coil. At this point, who has enough imagination for that. Now I will explain why this is needed. It often happens that the spring in starters of this type, after the first such self-repair and installation of the starter on the unit, flies again after a few jerks. the hook does not hold in the coil groove. And this is despite the fact that the coil almost snugly adheres to the starter cover and the spring there certainly should not hang freely up and down, and even more so until the spring leaves its engagement. It turns out that when the cable is pulled, the spring pulls out, pulls it out of the groove. In this case, you can do the following: cut out a narrow strip of metal, which, in thickness, could squeeze tightly into the groove of the coil along with the spring hook itself. So the hook will not dangle freely in the groove, which means it will not be so easy for it to break out.

Another solution to the problem: drill small holes in the coil on both sides of the groove and, inserting the spring hook, fix it with a thin wire threaded through these holes. But here you need to contrive to make sure that this wire does not touch when rotating the starter cover from the inside and thus does not slow down the pulley. Alternatively, loosely tighten the screw or replace it with a similar slightly longer one. You can think of an option with the installation of some kind of gasket between the lid and the coil.

How to change the starter cord?

• Tie a knot at one end of the new cord, pass it through the hole at the beginning of the spool (closer to its axis).
• Wind a few turns of the new cord onto the spool. If it is long, then cut off the excess.

Disassembly begins by loosening the screws holding the clutch cover, after which the chain tension is released. Only after that the bolts are completely unscrewed. Then the clutch pad, tire and the chain itself are removed. In the next step, the top case cover is removed.

The stages of disassembly of the device occur in the following order:

• Removable vibration handle. It is fixed to the saw body on three shock absorbers. To remove it, you will need to remove the plugs, then, using a screwdriver, squeeze out the shock absorbers, starting from the one located farthest in relation to the handle. Then unscrew the two screws and disassemble the handle. The throttle trigger can now be removed by disconnecting the wire rod.
• The starter is removed. Removing the top cap will allow access to the oil and fuel tank plugs. After removing the plugs, the starter is removed. The place where the starter is installed is thoroughly cleaned of sawdust.
• The flywheel is released. In order to remove it from its seat, you will need to use a union head with a size 13. Initially, the candle is unscrewed, the piston is blocked through the hole formed. Having loosened the nut, a punch is installed on it, on which a sharp blow is made. From this action, the flywheel jumps off the shaft, after which it can be easily removed by hand.
• The clutch and the oil pump drive are dismantled. The drive sprocket and needle bearing are removed first. For this, the lock washer is removed. Using a size 19 head, unscrew the bolts that hold the clutch. It should be noted that the thread on it is left-handed. Having dismantled the clutch, the baffle plate and the oil supply drive are removed.
• At the penultimate stage, the carburetor with a muffler and the ignition coil are removed. In order to remove the carburetor, you will need a head 8 and an extension. Before removing the air filter and carburetor, you will need to disconnect the ignition wire and disconnect the air damper. The muffler is held by two nuts that can be easily unscrewed.
• The engine is removed. Turning the saw body over, unscrew the four screws holding the motor. Then, with a gentle movement, it is removed from the installation site.

The engine itself is easy to disassemble. First, four screws are unscrewed and the crater is removed. Next, the crankshaft is removed along with the oil seals and other elements. Removal of the piston from the connecting rod occurs after removing the retaining ring and squeezing the piston pin.

Next, the cover on the side of the STIHL 180 chainsaw is removed, and the retaining ring holding the drive sprocket is removed with a screwdriver, after which the sprocket itself is removed.

In this way, the STIHL 180 chainsaw sprocket is also replaced if necessary.

The clutch is untwisted with a 19 head and a knob. It is necessary to unscrew the clutch clockwise, since the thread is left-handed. A reflective plate is installed behind the clutch, which must also be removed. The next detail is the worm drive of the oil pump.

Starter: installation

In the fierce winter, instead of sleeping like everyone else, my friends and I decided to build ourselves a chopper. They “dug out” two “Urals”, “Dnepr” and. forward. The first is the starter ring. It was developed and produced in Rybinsk and is installed on the Buran snowmobile. We bought it without a snowmobile. individually, attached it to the flywheel, centered and marked the holes for attaching the crown to the pillars of the driving clutch discs. They drilled out and countersunk for the bolts “in the hole”. We drill the holes of the outer drive disk to the diameter of the posts (with an allowance of 0.5 mm).

The second problem is the starter itself. Here the unit from the starting engine of the T-170 tractor came in handy. You can also use a starter from the “Whirlwind-30” outboard motor. brand ST-367A.

The third is to install a starter. First, we picked up the starter mounting bracket. In shape, it resembles a part of a bell, inside which you need to place the starter more tightly. We did not saw this part, but found a suitable one. part of the crankcase of the starting engine (therefore we do not give exact dimensions).

Then a cutout was made in the clutch housing for the starter mount, the motor was assembled for the final welding of the starter mount: a crankshaft and a flywheel with a crown are inserted into it.

Then the plug of the bendix was removed from the starter, and the bendix itself was fixed in the “on” position. The starter assembly with the fastening part was laid with the bendix gear on the flywheel crown, and “grabbed” by argon-arc welding. Rotating the flywheel, we checked the correct installation of the starter on the lateral engagement of the gears and the radial clearance between them. After adjusting the starter, the fastening part was finally scalded.

For a more reliable fixation of the starter, its rear part was compressed with a powerful clamp made of steel strip 3 mm thick.
