How to make a cultivator on a single axle tractor with your own hands

How to make a homemade electric cultivator, photo, video

A cultivator is a garden machine that tills the ground before sowing and after harvest. With its help, you can plow and loosen the soil, destroy weeds, apply fertilizers. It is also designed for row spacing, planting and thinning.

They also differ in weight and power:

  • ultra-light. machines weighing not more than 30 kg are designed to work on small garden plots;
  • Lightweight. machines weighing 30-60 kg can work on large plots. They can be used on ploughed fields and in virgin lands;
  • Medium. machines weighing 60-100 kg;
  • heavy. cultivators with a weight of more than 100 kg cultivate large farmland.

Design and working principle of a cultivator

Most cultivators have approximately the same design. They have a frame and working elements. These can be milling blades, discs, tines, etc. Also there are running or supporting wheels (mounted models do not have them), the system for fixing the working bodies, mechanisms to adjust the depth of their movement. With a special device, the cultivator can be moved from the working position to the transport position.Tillage units have a device that sets the working tools to a specified inter-row position, as well as a mechanism that allows you to control the movement of the cultivator. Cultivator operating principle depends on what working elements it has.Paw cultivators allow to cut weeds, loosen soil and apply fertilizers, and dip plants. Cultivator with smooth serrated discs allows you to till the soil in clearings. Cultivator with horizontally rotating needle discs breaks up soil crust and loosens soil in the protective zone and plant rows.

Rotary tillers and frame-wire tillers loosen soil, destroy vegetation (grass) in rows. Finger-type. loosen soil, kill weeds.

Moto-cultivator with their own hands: where to start and how to make

The main parts of homemade motocultivator. this gearbox and motor. The first thing we do is to make the frame of the future cultivator, drill holes for installing the main parts, and make handles for driving the machine from two curved pipes of diameter 32 mm. Between the homemade handles you must put another tube, which will be for us as a spacer, increasing the strength of construction. To one of the handles we will later install the starter button.

To make the shaft I used unnecessary scrap, welded to it a sprocket from the camshaft of VAZ engine, and the chain and both sprockets are welded to the metal to make a cover.

I connected the three-phase motor by a standard delta circuit, a capacitor starter button, place it on the handlebar for more convenience.

Grit hooks for the homemade power tiller

Our cultivator has to drive somehow. Choose the wheels you want. Remember that small wheels will stick in the ground and interfere with work. Too big wheels will be hard for the homemade cultivator to turn. The chosen wheels are attached to the steel corners, which are placed on the gearcase. Attaching wheels to your homemade machine isn’t everything. Tape the hooks to the wheels. They will help the machine to dig into the ground better.

Take automobile leaf springs or simple angles and cut the hooks of the right diameter from them. To get the best effect, set the angle of hooks to 120 °.

When all the parts are assembled, you will be able to use the homemade cultivator for several years. If you just want the machine to break up the solid earth into big chunks, you’ll need to go with it faster. A slower walking speed grinds the ground into tiny particles. it all depends on how fast you work with the cultivator. Before using it, oil the shaft of the mechanism so that the engine will last longer without damage.

On the same principle, you can also take for a homemade motokultivator motor from a washing machine. Dismantle a child’s bike and adjust the sprockets and bike chain on your machine. You will end up with such a homemade power tiller. However, if you decide to make this unit with your own hands, keep in mind that the wire will constantly get tangled under your feet and interfere. Due to the fact that the power of the mechanism depends on the network and cable. you will not go further than its length will allow.

Cultivator with their own hands collection

For a complete picture of what awaits you after you decide to make a motocultivator with their own hands, you can look at the video selection with a homemade machine.

There is such a cultivator. “Quick Kid”. Let’s see how you can make one at home.

Take the wooden axle. It will be the connecting element for the other parts. On this axis you need to fix a tube 24 mm in diameter. It will act as a handle, so do not bend in three bends, choose the length of pipe for your height.

Attach wheels with a diameter of no more than 200 mm to the mentioned axle. Cultivator will rest on the wheels, the height of the tool above the ground depends on the height of the wheels we have adapted to it. By the way, the wheels should be cut from metal 2-3 mm in thickness. Once you have all of the above hooked up, you can work on the ground.

The word cultivator does not only mean motor units. You can also use a hand tool in your garden. It is much better than a standard sapka and much easier to make at home than a power tiller. Have you heard of the “Tornado” cultivator?? It is similar to a defective pitchfork.

A round axle, to which the spirally welded tines. Such a tool is easiest to make from a fork you already have, if you don’t feel sorry for it. If you still need your pitchfork, buy another one at the store and make a “Tornado” out of it. Believe me, it is cheaper to buy a fork and remake it than to buy a ready made cultivator. Take a hammer and go over the tines, let them be bent in a spiral.

Homemade cultivator “Tornado”

“Tornado” is easy to use thanks to the lever, which the operator grabs when scrolling the cultivator into the ground. For the lever we need a tube, which we need to attach to the handle. The pipe should be 50 cm long. For fixing, you can use duct tape. As a pipe you can use the attachment on the stem, which are usually equipped with shovels. Such a lever will protrude 25 cm on both sides of the handle.

You can make a “Tornado” from spring steel. We take a half meter long, 1-1,5 mm thick and 2 cm wide plate. Bend the steel, make a loop out of it, which you put on the lever. Watch the height of the handle. It is important to maintain the diameter of the resulting loop. it should not be more than 20 cm in diameter to fit freely between the rows.

There is another version of the cultivator. a rotary disc. Just be warned that you will need to put a lot of physical strength to make the necessary convex disks. Put ordinary metal discs and hit them with a hammer. In the process, they should become bowl-shaped.

The main part of the mechanism. and it is discs, we put on the sleeve, which we attach to the axle. Connect both ends of the axle with cotter pins on the large bracket.

Make a hole on the large bracket, where we insert the tube with the handles and the crossbar between them.

On the small bracket with the help of a welding machine we place the rod. It should be 24 mm in diameter and 25 cm in length. Then we screw a 16-diameter rod into the rod.

Types of cultivators

Classification of devices is carried out depending on the mechanisms used. Separate the cultivators with the following equipment.

  • Electric. Primarily used for working large areas. The device can work only if there is source of electricity. The design is lightweight and compact, in addition, such devices do not pollute the atmosphere with harmful substances.
  • Battery. This type of equipment is used to work on small areas. The advantages of battery-powered cultivators are their high mobility and small size.
  • Petrol. Another type of equipment, which is considered one of the most common among dacha owners. Has a high performance, good mobility, easy to use. But such devices must be properly maintained, not to mention the atmospheric pollution of harmful substances.
  • Mechanical. It is no secret that manual cultivators are very easy to use, they do not take much time and effort, and are notable for their low cost. There are several types of designs of hand-held cultivators, from the simple “Tornado” cultivator, which is an ordinary fork with bent fingers on the bottom, and ending with a flatbed.

The advantages of manual cultivators can also include the fact that they are easy to make yourself. You don’t need special skills to do this, just follow the recommendations. To make this or that design you need a correct drawing of the product, a little free time, patience and, of course, some tools and materials.

What you need for the job

To make various devices for working the ground at home, you need to prepare special materials for this. First of all, you need to take care of getting steel. The more different pipes, sheets or metal bars you have, the better. You can’t do without a set of tools, but they are present in any garage, so you don’t have to worry about finding them.

A welding machine is one of the most important tools for working with metal products. With it, you can connect different parts made of metal in just a few seconds. Of course, in most cases you can do without a welding machine, joining the parts with self-tapping screws. But the quality of such joints can not be compared with the quality of welds.

Cutters for a power tiller homemade

Manufacturers offer different variants of tillers for power tillers. You can use one set of cutters or buy two different types of devices, changing them depending on the conditions of cultivation.

Some craftsmen prefer to use homemade products, which, if properly assembled, will be no worse than the factory ones.

The main advantage of making a soil cutter yourself is that it can be adjusted to the specific features of the site.

Varieties of

In power tillers with a PTO, a set of cutters can be a separate attachment. The unit is driven by a belt drive. The unit moves by wheels or grousers. The single-axle tractor itself moves slowly, while the cutting unit rotates at at least 3,000 rpm. In this case we can say that it is an active cutter, referring to the type of its feed.

On light-duty tractors and power tillers, the cutting assembly is mounted instead of the wheels. They rotate and cut the soil and move the machine at the same time. Here the feed type is passive, that’s why the cutter is called passive.

Active sabre elements

It is not quite correct to call a milling machine “active” or “passive” just because of its design features. Sabre-like elements. the best combination of quality and performance. They are made from alloy steel. They are hardened in the factory and treated with HF currents. They do not require additional maintenance, work perfectly on all types of soils.

Basically, the cutters are dialed in links on the hubs, 3-4 pcs. Each link is shifted in relation to the neighboring one at a small angle. Their curved ends are alternately turned in different directions. As practice has shown, 3 elements in a link do not give a stable movement of the unit. The machine jumps and is difficult to control. That’s why it is necessary to buy burrs with 4 blades. The working width depends on the engine power of the rotary cultivator. Working width varies from 0,8 m to 1,2 m.

Farmers try to make sabre-shaped tines with their own hands. Even if you can find steel from leaf springs, you have a problem shaping them into a curved shape. This requires machining in a forge, welding won’t help.

Goosefoot

Another successful finding of gardeners and farmers. equipping the cultivator with a goose-foot cutter. Originally, craftsmen made them themselves, but now you can buy this version in stores. The design has its own advantages:

  • Welded device made of suitable material;
  • sharp cutting blades;
  • the possibility of replacing any worn-out element.

Such assemblies are used when it is necessary to cultivate virgin land. Thanks to the high rotation speed, they can cope not only with sod-podzolic soils near Moscow, but also with the soil of the black earth regions of Russia. sharpened edges that enter into stratum at an acute angle, loosen and mix topsoil. No need to re-cultivate the site with the gooseneck planer.

Varieties

In power tillers with a PTO shaft, a set of cutters can be a separate attachment. Belt-driven power take-off shaft rotates the unit. The unit’s reciprocating motion is accomplished by wheels or grousers. The single-axle tractor itself moves slowly, while the cutting unit rotates at a frequency of at least 3,000 rpm. In this case, we can say that it is an active cutter, referring to the type of its feed.

On light power tillers and power tillers the cutting elements are installed instead of wheels. They rotate and cut through the soil and move the implement at the same time. The feed type here is passive and therefore the cutter is called passive.

Active sabre-like

Calling a tiller “active” or “passive” by its design features alone is not quite right. The sabre elements are a good compromise between quality and performance. They are made of alloyed steel. They are hardened and subjected to HF treatment at the factory. They do not require additional service and work well on all types of soils.

Cutters are generally fitted on hubs, 3-4 at a time. Each shank is shifted in relation to the neighboring shanks at a slight angle. Their curved ends alternately turn in different directions. Experience has shown that 3 elements in a link do not make the implement run smoothly. The design bounces and is difficult to control. That’s why you need to buy cutters with 4 blades. The working width depends on the engine power of the rotary cultivator. It varies from 0.8 m to 1.2 m.

Farmers try to make saber-shaped tillers with their own hands. Even if we can find steel from springs, we have a problem with giving them a curved shape. This requires machining in the forge, welding will not help here.

Goose legs

Another successful finding of gardeners and farmers is equipping the cultivator with a goose-foot cutter. Originally, they were made by craftsmen, but now you can buy them in the stores. The design has its own advantages:

  • Welded device made of a suitable material;
  • sharp cutting blades;
  • possibility of replacing any of the worn-out elements.

Such assemblies are used when it is necessary to cultivate virgin land. Thanks to the high rotation speed they can cope not only with the sod-podzolic soil near Moscow, but also with the soil of the black earth regions of Russia. The sharpened edges, which enter the bed at an acute angle, loosen and mix the topsoil. When using gooseneck cutters, there is no need to rework the area.

How to assemble correctly milling machines on a single axle tractor?

The assembly of the cutter with your own hands should be carried out as correctly as possible. Here too, it is particularly important to ensure that the active part cuts into the ground during operation. To do this, it is first recommended to study the drawings, and then proceed to make the equipment.

The following tools are required to build the cutters:

  • The rotor axis of the required length. It can be split into two parts if two units are to be assembled.
  • Short axle.
  • Gearbox with clamps.
  • Left and right blades.
  • Bolts, washers, nuts.

Assembly does not take more than an hour, but here it is important to install the blades in such a way that they do not interfere with rotations.

  • The long rotary axis is equipped with blades at an angle of 30 degrees.
  • It is necessary to combine four knives on one block, fixing them to the gears.
  • Then the correctness of the construction is checked and all fasteners are tightened.

This design is very robust and can withstand sufficiently high loads.

Ploughshare for power tiller with his hands

In order to equip the plier to your power tiller with your own hands, you need to take a long steel plate, measure the necessary parameters to cut and sharpen, so you get a blade. It is desirable to use the preliminary drawings in order to make a planer with their own hands accurately and without errors.

The ploughshare is characterized by sharpening on one side, so that it moves only forward. Then this blade must be attached to the two supporting brackets, which are connected to the chain of the motoblock. It is also desirable to install limiters, so that the plate moved evenly, without going far into the soil (very often for this purpose they take the wheels with iron bushings from a child’s car, the main thing is that they fit the parameters).

For easy plowing of the plier in the ground, so it would not jump out and evenly dip the beds, it should be weighted by welding on top of it some matching details. And now the tool for your power tiller is ready.

It is then necessary to attach it to the power tiller in the right way. It is necessary to attach a bearing on the axle of a power tiller on the inner side, and then to weld a plate to it that will connect a homemade plane.

As you can see, to make a plough to the tiller with your own hands is not difficult, the main thing is to understand well what to do, and do a little work. And you get a great helper in the garden or in the garden, which will perform the old work many times faster and more efficiently.

This is interesting: the plowing of the vegetable garden with a power tiller with a plow.

The plough a singleaxle tractor is not a complicated thing, but worthy of attention. It can easily replace a hoe, “fork” and sometimes even a shovel. The main thing is to take care of your tool, and then it will be good for you for many seasons.

Hoeing tools for power tillers. how to make them with your own hands

Many owners of power tillers and cultivators who visited the store where I worked often had a question:

“What’s that stick that looks like a coulter with a sharp arrow at the base on the showcase?”?

After a short story, they would get excited or buy it without question if there was unploughed virgin land on the plot.

It’s simple. Imagine an unplowed virgin land, overgrown with turf on clay soil.

If you try to “take” the land with a tiller, a single-axle tractor will start jumping, without any hint at cultivation.

When working with a plow, it will often get stuck against the rhizomes of shrubs and weeds. Get stuck on clay, pop out of the soil, or choke.

In such a situation, the ploughshare is indispensable. With its help, the soil is easily ripped into several parts under the turf. Meadow grass roots will be cut in the blink of an eye.

This is due to the sharpened boom, which, like a knife, cuts through everything in front of it.

After ploughing, it is a pleasure to lift virgin land with a plough. Thereby the plough will save your time and a couple of liters of sweat on the difficult ground.

Price around 500r. So I recommend paying close attention to it.

What homemade things you can assemble by remaking an ordinary single-axle tractor

There are different variants of interesting homemade power tillers. It all depends on the needs and imagination of its owner. Some homemade vehicles are used to improve tillage, others for hunting and fishing, and others just for fun. It is possible to distinguish several typical designs, which are the most common:

  • Practical and handy mini-tractor.
  • Snowmobile for fans of winter fishing and hunting.
  • All-terrain vehicle not afraid of off-road.
  • Swampwalker for traveling for cranberries.
  • Motorcycle rake for transporting sleds.
  • Caracat for driving on rough terrain.
  • ATV likeness.

You’ll need a basic understanding of mechanics to build any of these machines.

Homemade rotary rake for power tillers

If you want, you can easily make a homemade rake for your power tiller. For a rake with a wide grip for hay, you can use ordinary water pipes with different diameters. You will need to put a special sleeve on the round rod, and then tap its surface, turning it slightly.

It is best to use a round rod. Most parts of the rake are fastened by electric welding, because this method is simple, and at the same time a reliable construction is obtained.

A more simple design can be achieved if the rotary parts on the axes will be fixed without rolling bearings.

It is better to make a hay rake for a power tiller foldable, because it will simplify their transportation.

Features of making a cultivator with a motor from a moped

There are many options for modifying gasoline equipment for motocultivator, or vice versa, making a snowmobile from farm equipment. Below we will consider how to remake a motocultivator on the basis of a moped.

The basis of the unit is enclosed engine D8. Around the cylinder will need to rip on a tin vessel for infusing water. thus get a kind of cooling system. Water should be changed periodically, so as not to allow the cylinder to heat above 100 ° C.

The converted machine must be fitted with a chain reducer using a bicycle sprocket. The lower part of the gearbox will perform the power function, so the output shaft will need to be strengthened by metal bushings, firmly fixed to the gearbox.

Such modernization of an old moped makes it possible to produce a reliable power tiller that allows plowing the soil and performing a number of other functions.

Making a power tiller

Using all of the above tips you can build a single-axle tractor yourself in a fairly short time, using only improvised materials and spending a small amount of money.

Rotary disc cultivator

Contrary to other makeshift crafts the rotary cultivator is not so easy to build. Although its benefits are undoubted, because it is a multifunctional device, which can carry out harrowing, level the land, breaking up large lumps and a dozen other functions.

To make a disc cultivator, you need convex discs mounted on two axles. To understand the principle of assembly and operation you need to watch the video.
