To make a large hole in concrete, crowns are used. This cutting tool is a hollow cylinder, inside of which cut material (core) moves. Its working part can be equipped with carbide cutting segments or diamond cutting edges.
For percussion drilling using a perforator, a carbide-tipped crown is used. The diamond-coated working part is mainly used for the shockless drilling method with coolant. This tool is quite durable, but in any case, after some time, requires restoration. If the integrity of the housing is not broken, then a carbide or diamond segment is soldered to the working surface of the crown. If you need to drill a hole of relatively small diameter, the tool can be in your hands. But for drilling large-sized holes, a professional installation is attached to the wall with anchors.
You can make a hole in concrete with an impact drill. But the punch is best suited for such purposes. Such a tool will be effective in drilling holes with a diameter of about 100 mm. However, it must be borne in mind that the reinforcing metal encountered in the path of the cutting tool can jam and break the teeth. Toothed crowns are especially prone to this moment. Therefore, before work, you will need to study the characteristics of the drilling tool and, in accordance with the properties of the material, pick it up. If it is not possible to work with a rotary hammer, it can be replaced with an impact drill. Of course, it is less efficient and has some drilling features. But if you have a small amount of work, then you can limit it to it.

There are two ways to make a hole in a concrete wall: use a drill with a shock function or a perforator. The first is used when it is intended to drill a hole at a shallow depth. As for the puncher, it is a more powerful tool and its drilling speed is much higher. There is no need to use pressure while drilling. Ways to work with a drill and a puncher are similar.
Drilling a concrete wall is necessary in the following sequence:
- First of all, you need to determine the location of the wiring. Failing to fulfill this condition, the master may receive an electric shock.
- Mark drilling locations. In this case, the master should have a comfortable and stable position. The drilling process is accompanied by a large amount of dust, so when working, the eyes should be protected with special glasses.
- Prepare the tool and make a mark on the wall with a drill having a standard sharpening. This nuance will help make the right start.
- Break the stones with a punch. This drill, which is not difficult to find in a construction kit and its price is much lower than for concrete cutting tools.
- The master needs to monitor the temperature of the drill and cool it with water every 10 minutes.
- During the drilling process, the tool may stumble on rebar or stones. This can be understood by the characteristic whistle and ringing (reinforcement). In addition, the drilling speed can drop significantly (stone). A punch is used to break the stone. For cutting reinforcing metal, it is necessary to change the drill bit to a conventional one, designed for cutting metal.
- In the process, every 1.5 cm the drill must be pulled out a little from the hole without turning off the tool itself. This will allow the accumulated concrete chips to go outside and gently approach the reinforcement.
- To reduce dust formation, you can make a funnel from a transparent plastic film, which is worn directly on a drill or perforator.
Drill a large diameter hole in the wall for a wall outlet, junction box or make a ventilation duct in several ways. The first is to make several holes of small diameter along the marked contour, after which the concrete should be knocked out with a chisel. But the work in this case will be sloppy, because the edges will not be smooth enough.
Therefore, it is better to punch a hole in concrete with a crown, which must be selected in accordance with the desired size. To extend its service life, you can first use the first method, and then go through the slotted hole with a crown.

A major advantage over other methods of drilling holes in concrete is diamond drilling. High precision, speed, low noise and vibration levels make this technology quite popular.
The process of making holes can be carried out in different directions: in horizontal, vertical planes, as well as at an angle. The maximum drilling depth can reach up to 2 meters, and the hole diameter up to 500 mm. over, the drilling speed is from 1. 6 cm / min.
Diamond drilling technology is carried out by special equipment using diamond ring crowns. The operation of the installation begins with the spinning of the annular crown at high speed, while the water is supplied with a pump to the working area. Fluid is needed to cool and remove drilling products from a cutting tool. At the end of the process, the hole is smooth, with neat edges.
I would also like to note that the cost of new equipment or its rental is quite high. But with the professional use of a special diamond installation, the costs are paid off by the accuracy of the work performed, high speed and silence. In addition, the lack of additional hole processing and exhausting cleaning of the premises are a significant plus for its application.
