Adjusting The Carburetor Of Any Chainsaw With Your Own Hands.

The heart of the internal combustion engine is a carburetor. Just as in the human body. with the interruptions in its work, the whole organism ceases to function normally.

Carburetor diagnosis.

You can diagnose a crash or unconfigured carburetor yourself.

If you observe the following troubleshooting chainsaw, check the condition of the carburetor:

  • tool starts and stalls;
  • increased vibration, especially without load;
  • chainsaw stalls when you press the gas;
  • rich exhaust with the smell of gasoline;
  • The engine does not start at all, with a normal spark supply.

Consider the gasoline carburetor arrangement.

This node is designed to form a mixture of gasoline and oxygen, which is then fed into the cylinders for ignition.
Engine designers have determined the parameters of the mixture, in which your tool will produce maximum power with minimal fuel consumption.
Accordingly, it is necessary to mix air and gasoline in specific proportions and to keep a portion of the prepared mixture before supplying it to the intake manifold of the engine. This is what the carburetor does.
The needle connected to the float dispenses the amount of fuel entering the carburetor chamber. The air damper delivers a certain amount of air. The quality of the mixture depends on the well-coordinated work of the whole mechanism.
To set the operating parameters, as well as when adjustments are necessary (for example, when working in the mountains or the case of refuelling with not very high-quality gasoline), correction is provided.
Unlike modern automobile engines, a chainsaw is a more primitive unit. Otherwise, its value would be too high.
Practical tips on setting up a Champion chainsaw carburetor
Therefore, the correction of the formation of the fuel mixture in it is absent, like many other electronic systems used in modern internal combustion engines. These functions are assigned to the owner of the chainsaw.
We climbed 100 meters above sea level, the mass fraction of oxygen in the air has changed. we are enriching the mixture. We changed the supplier of gasoline (unfortunately, in our realities, this is an urgent issue), we need to update the settings again.
In the service centers, you will set the correct settings, but for money and in bench conditions. And in real life, you need to be able to perform this procedure yourself. No one will help you with the repair in the forest.

Adjusting the carburetor chainsaws away from the service workshop.

Instructions on how to set up a chainsaw are in the technical documentation for your tool. Nevertheless, we will consider typical operations to improve the performance of the device.
Bodies adjusting carburetor located in an accessible place. To get to them, there is no need to remove the housing cover. In different models, the adjustment holes may be located differently; the illustration shows a typical combination.

The setup procedure is as follows.

  • Screw “T” designed to tune the engine in idle mode.
    On different models, it may be referred to as “LA” or “S”. The parameter is set by rotating the screw in the left direction to the state of stable operation at minimum speed. If the engine stalls. you need to tighten the screw a little to the right side. The working shaft, when working at idle speed, should not rotate. If the chain has moved when adjusting, loosen the screw a quarter turn back. The more accurately you catch the moment when quite a few turns remain before the chain starts moving, the more economical the fuel consumption will be.
  • Screw “L” sets the degree of acceleration of the chainsaw when you press the accelerator.
    When you open the throttle, the rpm should gradually increase to the maximum value. If the chainsaw stalls under load, this is a sure sign of improper installation of the acceleration controller. It is necessary to slightly unscrew the screw counterclockwise, achieving a smooth, confident acceleration when opening the accelerator.
  • Screw “H” limits the speed of the working shaft.
    If you do not fix this value. there will be a failure in ignition advance, and the chainsaw will work in jerks, or as the lumberjacks say. “hawking”. Such a regime can cause injury. In models with a simplified carburetor design, acceleration and maximum revolutions may not be adjustable. In this case, all modes of operation of the internal combustion engine are set by the idling screw.

Signs of proper adjustment.

  1. At idle, the operating circuit remains stationary. When adding “gas” immediately comes into motion;
  2. When the accelerator is opened, the engine of the chainsaw is instantly accelerated. The acceleration process occurs evenly, quickly reaching a maximum;
  3. When the maximum speed is reached, the saw runs smoothly, without jerks. The sound of the engine is uniform, without detonations;
  4. Clean exhaust, a little bluish colour. At change of turns only the intensity of an exhaust grows, color does not change.

If you managed to adjust the carburetor without disassembling the body of the chainsaw, and the symptoms of malfunctions are gone. continue to work on. If not, you will have to remove the top tool cover and dismantle the carburetor.
Inside the cap is an air filter. As a rule, it is a piece of foam rubber or similar material. Try not to clog or wet the screen. Then gently disconnect the fuel line and accelerator cable from the carburetor.
Ensure that no fuel enters the enclosure. Try to catch the extra gasoline with a clean cotton rag.
Then you need to remove the carburetor from the body, and lay on a clean surface for disassembly and washing.
Tip! Before disassembling and in the process of work, take pictures of all stages. It will help not to be mistaken when reassembling.
Try to remember (or better measure and fix on paper) the position of the set screws. Otherwise, the adjustment of the carburetor of the chainsaw after assembly will be difficult due to the mismatch of all installations.
After completing the work, check whether there are “extra” parts left on the assembly table and whether the tool is left inside the case.
