Chain saw motor oil

Popular brands

As mentioned above, there are many brands of modern saw oils. Among them there are both little-known and very popular ones. If you decide to purchase high-quality and reliable saw oil, then you should familiarize yourself with the list of the most demanded models.

Bio Plus

The company’s products called Bio Plus are plant-based. Oils of this company, when penetrating into the soil, very soon begin to decompose. Not every oil can boast of such a distinction. It is permissible to use this product at temperatures up to 15 degrees, like the previous version.

Can I use engine oil?

Whether it is permissible to use engine oil as a saw lubricant is another common question from tool owners.

In fact, transmission and engine compounds can be used to lubricate the chain of individual models, but it should be borne in mind that it is better to avoid such mineral compositions.

It should be borne in mind that such compositions are suitable exclusively for specific saw models. The fact that the tool can be lubricated with engine or transmission oils must be indicated in the technical documentation attached to the equipment.

Never lubricate the chain with such agents, unless authorized by the manufacturer. Remember that these formulations are not designed for the operating conditions of the chain. They simply will not be able to fully protect the equipment. Therefore, it is better not to take risks and not resort to the use of these types of oils.

Ordinary vegetable oils are not suitable for lubricating the chain mechanism. Of course, they will have a short lubricating effect, but it is worth remembering that such compositions have a characteristic property. they dry out. Subsequently, this can lead to the fact that the chain will move very poorly in the mechanism, with delays. Because of this, the performance of the saw as a whole will noticeably deteriorate, therefore it is not recommended to experiment with vegetable oils in relation to this technique.

Champion

Champion adhesive oil is usually used for work with a fairly wide temperature range. This grease is sold in containers of 3 and 10 liters. The product is inexpensive, it is also easy to use.

What is it for?

Many owners of electric saws ask a reasonable question, why does this tool need oil. The answer is simple. this tool is used as a lubricant for the chain in order to neutralize the impressive force of friction between individual parts. Due to the presence of oil, important elements of the device do not suffer from excessive heat, in contact with each other.

Sometimes there are cases in which extra effort has to be made to cut. This fact signals an insufficient amount of lubricant or its questionable quality. In such a situation, experts advise to look at the oil level in the unit reservoir as soon as possible. You can immediately apply additional lubrication to the chain to complete the work already started.

With good oil applied on time, the saw will not only run more efficiently and lighter, but also last longer. Equipment deprived of such maintenance is subject to very serious breakdowns. It will hardly last long.

On the modern market, there are several options for oil intended for processing chain saws. These formulations can be mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic based. It should be borne in mind that the latter contain both synthetic and mineral components. Another category of modern chain oils for electric saws from different companies is represented by products based on raw materials of plant origin. Of course, each group of oils has its own advantages and disadvantages.

If we consider the properties of all oils in terms of stability and the ability to operate effectively in rather difficult conditions, then, of course, synthetic products come out on top. They are capable of operating electric saws even in very cold weather (up to 40 degrees). However, these types of oils have one important drawback that must be taken into account. they are expensive. This is why many consumers are abandoning their purchase in favor of more affordable options.

As for the popular mineral oils, they are several times cheaper than the synthetic ones. However, their performance characteristics are very inferior to the characteristics of the above compositions.

At a temperature of 25 degrees, the lion’s share of mineral oils simply stops flowing to the area where destructive friction of the saw parts occurs, that is, it ceases to perform its main function. Such oil should not be used in the cold winter period. in the cold it will be ineffective or even completely useless.

Semi-synthetic oils are a cross between synthetic and mineral products. These types of oils are produced for both electric and gasoline devices.

How to choose?

If you want your electric saw to serve for a long time and not give you any trouble, then you should choose high-quality oil for it. This issue should be approached very seriously, because the condition and performance of not the cheapest tool will depend on your choice.

There are several basic criteria to consider when choosing a lubricant.

  • As stated above, engine or transmission oil may only be used if permitted by the tool manufacturer. Open the instructions. there should be a point about the permissibility of using such oils. Also, do not use only mineral formulations. Engine oil can not only lubricate the chain, but also clean the various systems in the device.
  • It is advisable to buy a specialized lubricant for electric saws from different companies. On sale you can find many options for such compositions. Often, both saws and oils are made by one manufacturer. It is worth purchasing formulations with good adhesion properties. These oils will not slip off the chain while the saw is in use. In addition, the composition must be branded.

Handicraft and too cheap oils should not be trusted, they can only harm the tool.

  • Some people turn to used engine oil when caring for their electric saw. It is important to know that such a composition is extremely contaminated. Therefore, it can heavily pollute the entire system, and with it the circuit itself.

Many users claim that their electric saw continues to function normally with this lubrication, but experienced professionals strongly advise against using waste oils.

Husqvarna

The name of this world famous brand inspires trust. Husqvarna Saw Oil is the most cost effective and economical solution for lubricating your electric saw mechanism. These products are characterized by moderate consumption and high efficiency.

What oil for an electric chain saw should not be used, and what to add to the lubrication system and what can be replaced?

The service life of both the cutting attachment (bar and chain) and the oil pump greatly depends on what kind of oil is used to lubricate the chain in an electric saw. Therefore, it is very important to select the right oil. Let’s figure out how to do it.

What can be used to lubricate an electric chain saw?

Such a question is often sent to us by our readers, in most cases we answer them. the same as for a chainsaw. Let’s see why we answer this way.

The design of the cutting part of a chain saw and an electric saw are the same. Both saws have a bar, a chain, and an oil pump. Everything is identical except for the powertrain that powers it all. An electric saw has an electric motor, a chainsaw has an internal combustion engine.

Therefore, for the chain lubrication system of the electric saw, the same is used as for chainsaws.

If you see an inscription like this on a box of oil. “Special oil for the chain saw lubrication”, then remember that this is nothing more than a marketing ploy.

Caliber is one of the popular chain oils.

Our site has an excellent selection of review articles on chain oils, we recommend reading them, they will answer all your questions:

  • Which oil to choose for the chain is a very useful article, in the same place we told why it is not worth using the mining, an expert comparison of oils was also carried out, which will help to make a choice.
  • How to choose a Husqvarna branded oil. this article will help you understand why these oils are so expensive and which one is worth buying and which is not.
  • How to choose STIHL branded oil. the entire line of the company’s oils is also considered and recommendations for choosing are given.

What to replace?

Any other oil with good adhesion properties is as good as that of chain saw oils. This does not include any oils designed for car engines. They have a low adhesion value. Such oil will not stick to the teeth of the chain, but will simply fly off it at the moment the chain link passes along the driven star of the tire, especially at high speeds.

Poor adhesion oil adheres very poorly to the chain

As a result, it turns out that the saw cuts dry, because of this, the chain, tire and even the drive sprocket quickly wear out. It also increases engine wear and increases energy consumption.

Development is highly discouraged because it clogs the oil pump of the chain lubrication system. At first there will be good savings, but after a certain time this will lead to expensive repairs to the chain lubrication system.

If you want to save money, buy cheap analogs from Caliber, Oregon, Zubr, etc. instead of STIHL or Husqvarna branded oils. The difference in price is 2 or even 3 times.

What kind of oil should be poured into an electric saw

For most electric saw owners, it is not a big secret that the oil used to lubricate the chainsaw is one of the main consumables. However, at the same time, not everyone pays due attention to the quality of the lubricant. And it is completely in vain, since the term of its further operation will depend on how well this product will lubricate the working surface of the chain. Therefore, before pouring oil into the saw, you need to pay attention to its technical characteristics.

General recommendations for choosing a lubricant for an electric saw

When choosing an oil for lubricating an electric saw, each of the users asks the question, which of the options is more profitable and acceptable. a special oil for chain mechanisms or ordinary machine oil? If you listen to the experts, then, of course, the first option is preferable, since the chain lubrication oil was specially developed taking into account the technical characteristics of the electric saw.

The technical characteristics mean a certain temperature regime and friction of the working parts of the lubrication mechanism.

Although conventional engine oil is cheaper than special oil, it must be taken into account that it serves a completely different purpose and cannot guarantee moderate wear on working parts. So you can win a little in price now, but then you will have to overpay for the repair of prematurely worn mechanisms.

Many experts recommend using a brand of special oil with the letter N to lubricate the electric saw. It is slightly more expensive, but guarantees a long and trouble-free operation of the chain. Its main advantages include:

  • excellent biodegradability;
  • increased adhesive capabilities;
  • presence in the composition of special additives that protect against premature wear.

By following these guidelines, you can significantly increase the life of your electric saw chain. However, the final choice of lubricant is always up to the user.

How the chain lubrication system works

As already mentioned, the pump is the main link in the lubrication system. It works as follows. When the engine speed rises, the gear, which is located on the main shaft, starts the pump operation by means of transmission. At this moment, the pressure in the oil supply system rises, and it begins to move in the direction of the tire. This movement ends where the saw casing touches the tire, in the very place where the longitudinal groove is located, to which the oil channel itself is directed when installing the tire. This groove is required to supply lubricant to the tire at any tension level of the chain mechanism, i.e. regardless of the position of the tire when the electric saw is running, the groove will ensure the supply of lubricant to it. The next link in the feed is the chain itself. Its links have their own separate groove or hole through which the material is distributed along the length of the chain.

Electric saw chain automatic lubrication system

In the case of an increase in engine speed, the lubricant pumping speed also increases. Therefore, it is recommended to pour oil into the saw only when the engine is off.

Many modern models of electric saws, for example, Makita, have built-in pumps with additional skip adjustment, with which you can adjust the amount of lubricant supplied. In older versions of saws, this feature is usually absent. There, the oil supply is carried out in a constant and unchanged mode, or, as in the very first models, the user has to manually lubricate the chain. Those who own outdated copies need to know how to properly lubricate the chain mechanism by hand. It’s not difficult at all:

  • take any old container and fill it with oil;
  • the chain mechanism is gently immersed in this container.

These actions should be carried out periodically as the lubricant on the chain is consumed.

Consequences of insufficient or excess lubrication on the chain

Certain parameters must be respected for each mechanism whose operating mode is associated with lubrication based on machine oil. This applies primarily to the amount of oil required for its normal operation. Such problems can arise if there is not enough oil:

  • overheating of the circuit;
  • premature bluntness of cutting teeth;
  • seized or broken chain;
  • additional time spent on cutting;
  • increased wear of the sprocket;
  • tire failure.

For an electric chain saw, it is recommended to fill the oil tank in the following proportion: one full oil fill to a full gas tank, i.e. 1: 1. In some models, for example, Bosh, the lubrication system works in a fully automatic mode and if there is too much or too little oil on the chain, the saw itself begins to regulate its supply. However, if a malfunction occurs, and the oil starts literally pouring from the chain mechanism, then its excess can lead to the following undesirable consequences:

  • increased oil consumption;
  • excessive contamination of the tool body;
  • wide spray of oil from the chain.

As you can see, an overabundance of lubricant does not lead to critical consequences, but its overexpenditure will certainly hit your Taking into account the fact that the cost of high-quality lubricating oil is quite high, it is better to use it sparingly.

Main components of the lubrication system

Typically, oil enters the chain saw chain lubrication system from a special reservoir, where it is periodically poured. From there, it is pushed out by a powerful oil pump, doing this at regular intervals sufficient to consume the previous injection. The main task of the oil mechanism is to prevent the occurrence of such situations when the lubrication on the chain becomes insufficient, and as a result of this, severe overheating of the cutting part may occur due to sharply increased friction forces. As a result, the chain can become dull and fail. Therefore, the oil must be constantly monitored. Typically, a saw’s lubrication system consists of the following components:

  • oil tank for chain lubrication;
  • special oil filter;
  • oil line, which is a small rubber hose that serves to supply oil from the tank;
  • an oil pump that pumps the lubricant from the tank to the cutting mechanism;
  • special gear, with the help of which the power is transferred to the pump from the electric saw motor.

The tire could also be added to this list, since it has special holes for oil supply.

What is chain lubrication on an electric saw for?

Electric saw oil is used as a chain lubricant to reduce frictional forces and reduce heat build-up. As a result, a fast and trouble-free operation of the cutting blade is achieved. Sometimes it happens that at some stages of cutting it is necessary to exert additional efforts to obtain the required cut, and this directly indicates an insufficient amount of lubricant or its not very good quality. In this case, it is recommended to immediately check the oil level in the reservoir or simply lubricate the chain to complete the current work.

Most new models of the electric chain saw have a built-in automatic oil supply system to the surface of the cutting element, and manual lubrication is only necessary for outdated equipment.

This will allow work to be carried out quickly, efficiently and with a high level of safety, which ultimately will lead to significant savings in repair and maintenance of the entire tool.

Useful Tips

It is important to keep in mind that under conditions of increasing engine speed, the pumping speed of the lubricating composition also increases significantly. That is why it is required to pour the oil mixture into the electric saw only if the engine is turned off.

If you decide to refuel your equipment with used oil, then you should consider that it can harm the saw. In no case, do not refer to such compositions, especially if you have a new instrument.

There are a lot of oils on sale. But the best option is an oil that has good adhesion properties. These products contain special additives. Thanks to the latter, the composition does not shake off and does not flow off the saw chain as it actively rotates. Only such a remedy will be effective and will have a beneficial effect on the condition of the instrument.

How to choose oil for an electric saw, you will learn from the video below.

The service life of the electric saw headset largely depends on the quality and correct dosage of the special lubricant supplied to the rubbing components. Saw chain oil is a mineral or organic based compound with special functional properties.

The tandem of the bar and the saw chain is operated under conditions of high static and variable loads, therefore, in parallel with the lubrication of rubbing parts, their full cooling is realized.

What to use for chain saw oil

Electric saw oil is perhaps the most important and necessary consumable. It is he who has a positive effect on the operation of the instrument. Good oil significantly simplifies the operation of this device. With it, the cutting blade is in better contact with materials with different structures. In addition, thanks to this consumable, the tool can last much longer.

Let’s figure out how to choose the right oil for your electric saw.

Sunth plus

This equally popular oil is made on the basis of synthetic components. It easily endures rather serious equipment loads.

It can be used in already more severe conditions. the ambient temperature can reach up to 25 degrees.

Because of this, the oil will not stop acting and flow to the desired nodes.

Value for money alternatives

The price of a chain oil of an average quality range is several times less than the cost of an engine oil, and automated lubrication systems allow the lubricant to be consumed in an economical mode (up to 50%).

On the other hand, the use of alternative materials can significantly reduce the life of the bar, saw chain and drive sprocket. In different versions, this indicator can vary from 5 to 15%.

Varieties of lubricants for electric saws

The modern lubricant market offers several options for such products. The compositions differ in the basis. synthetics, mineral water or semi-synthetics. In recent years, herbal lubricants have gained popularity. Each option has strengths and weaknesses:

  • Synthetic lubricants. If we consider lubricants in terms of stability, synthetics will take the lead. Substances can ensure the operation of electric saws even in very cold weather (up to 40 degrees Celsius). The disadvantages include the high cost of the product.
  • Mineral lubricants. The products of this group are quite popular, since they are several times cheaper than synthetics. On the other hand, technical parameters are inferior to synthetic lubricants. Mineral-based oils cannot withstand temperatures as low as 25 degrees Celsius. The grease hardens and has a detrimental effect on the individual parts of the saw. For the winter period, the substance is not suitable.
  • Semi-synthetic lubricants. An intermediate link between synthetics and mineral water. They do a good job with their functions. Have an affordable cost. The properties do not reach the level of synthetics.

Today it is not difficult to choose a suitable composition for lubricating an electric saw. When choosing, it is worth focusing on the operating conditions of the saw and on the composition of the lubricant.

Criterias of choice

Engine oils and their chain counterparts are not interchangeable. The compound for chain lubrication has a number of characteristic differences, in particular, an increased level of adhesion to metal.

Can Bar & Chain Oil be used as Motor Oil? Let’s find out!

  • Saw sets of all types of hand saws have the same design, therefore the chain oil for the electric saw is identical to the composition that is used in sawing mechanisms of gas-powered models.
  • When choosing a chain lubricant for a specific model, it is recommended to give preference to the grades and grades indicated in the operating instructions. As a rule, these are proprietary developments, created taking into account many factors.

In the absence of a recommended consumable, it is better to use a well-known brand of oil. Branded products of these manufacturers are characterized by universal lubricating properties, stable operating parameters in a wide range of temperature effects.

Mineral and organic chain lubricants

Chain oil for an electric saw of a budget price level has less perfect properties. Consequently, the scope of its application includes short and not intensive sawing work performed in the range of optimal loads.

The lubricating properties of mineral and organic chain oils are almost identical. The essential advantage of organic lubricants is neutrality and environmental friendliness. For Chinese-made saws, chain lubrication oil with proprietary additives is recommended, which in many characteristics is not inferior to European counterparts.

Chain saw oil

An electric saw has a number of advantages over a gasoline saw. This is less noise, and lighter weight and ease of use. But the owner of such a unit must remember that the cutting chain requires special care. During operation, it is subjected to constant friction, as a result of which heating occurs. Lubricants are required to protect and extend the life. In this case, the oil for the electric saw should be selected of the proper quality.

Can I use regular engine oil

Many novice craftsmen are wondering whether regular engine oil is suitable for lubricating an electric saw chain. It is almost always available in any workshop, but not every user has a special lubricant.

The use of transmission and engine composition is allowed, but it is undesirable to use mineral. Although there are some models for which it is suitable. Such information is indicated in the technical documentation of the unit. If it is not there, then it is unacceptable to lubricate the saw chain mechanism with engine oil, so as not to spoil it.

Regular vegetable oil is also not suitable for this purpose. It does not have sufficient viscosity, so the lubrication effect will not last long and the tool will not be protected during operation. It is not recommended to use mining, since it has a low quality and it cannot provide the necessary protection.

Choosing the Right Saw Lubricant

If there are no special instructions and recommendations in the technical documentation, then you should use the products of reliable companies. Such materials are of high quality and meet the requirements. Manufacturers usually recommend lubricant grades that correspond to the brands of the tool itself, they are the most suitable. However, their cost is also high, this will also have to be taken into account. The correct choice of lubricant for the electric saw is the key to obtaining the desired result of work and preserving the device.

An example of an inexpensive and quality product is the Champion brand. It is suitable for working in various temperature conditions. On sale you can find packages of 3 and 10 liters. It is easy and convenient to use. Another well-known brand is the Husqvarna brand. This oil is very effective. At the same time, its cost is also moderate.

Forest plus and Bio Plus also manufacture chain saw lubricants. The latter also differs in that it decomposes quickly when it enters the soil. Under suitable conditions, these materials have a shelf life of 3 years. However, they can be used at an air temperature of at least 15 ° С.

Sunth Plus oil is suitable for use in sufficiently severe frosts, up to 25 ° C. It is made on a synthetic base. It tolerates even high loads during the operation of the equipment. This brand is one of the best.

Do not trust handicraft products, the price of which is very low. Not only are they ineffective, they can even cause serious damage to the instrument. This also applies to the waste product. It contaminates the saw chain and mechanism.

Why do you need to lubricate the chain of an electric saw

Lubricating the chain saw helps to reduce friction. When in contact with each other, the parts of the tool do not experience excessive heat. The friction force is leveled. Electric saw chain lubricant prevents damage to both the chain and the bar.

Sometimes, in the process of working with an electric saw, it becomes necessary to make extra efforts during cutting. This indicates that a low-quality grease was used, or the amount was not enough. Then you need to immediately check the oil level in the reservoir. You can also lubricate the saw chain itself to complete the job.

If you use proper quality saw chain oil and apply it on time, it will be easier to operate the saw. It also contributes to the safety of the instrument. Lubrication of the unit prevents breakdowns and malfunctions.

Types of oils for electric saw lubrication

There are special grades of such materials for lubricating the chain of an electric saw. There are many options on the market. They all have a different composition. Their base can be synthetic, mineral and semi-synthetic. There are also plant-based chain products. Each variety has its own characteristics. When choosing, it is necessary to take into account the advantages and disadvantages of the material.

The most effective are synthetic varieties. They can be used even at very low temperatures. frost below 40 ° C, ensuring the normal operation of the tool. But a serious disadvantage of such materials is their high cost. It is not always affordable for consumers to buy them. Therefore, they prefer other options.

The price of mineral oils is two or more times lower than synthetic oils. But their quality characteristics are also noticeably lower. At low temperatures, even at 25 ° C, they cannot reach their destination in the motor, and parts begin to undergo friction, and as a result, the mechanism quickly breaks down. Therefore, if it is necessary to work in the cold, they are useless and other types of lubricants should be used.

The middle option between mineral and synthetic oils is semi-synthetic. These materials are commercially available for electric and gasoline saws. If you need to purchase chain lubrication for the electric saw, it is better to choose the grades and grades of materials that are indicated in the unit’s instructions. Usually these are the types that have the most desirable characteristics for this particular model.

Consequences of a lack or excess of lubricant on the chain

For the proper operation of an electric saw, certain requirements must be observed. First of all, this applies to the process of lubricating the chain, more precisely, to the amount of oil that is required to ensure the protection of the parts of the mechanism. If it is not received enough, then the following problems may arise:

  • The tire will fail.
  • The circuit starts to overheat.
  • Cutting teeth dull quickly.
  • The sprocket wears out quickly.
  • The chain is jammed and may even break.
  • Cutting takes more time and effort.

Many modern models have an automated lubrication system that regulates its supply. But in the event of a malfunction, the oil may begin to flow out in excess and drain from the chain mechanism. This will lead to serious cost overruns. The cost of a quality saw lubricant is high. Therefore, its uneconomical use will cause additional financial costs.

Saw chain lubrication system: working principle

Modern models of electric saws are most often equipped with special systems that automatically supply oil to the cutting tool. Older versions of these units required manual lubrication. To use for this purpose you need oil with certain technical characteristics and viscosity index.

Chainsaw Bar Oil vs Motor Oil

The oil is poured into a special tank, from which after a certain time it is pushed out by an oil pump. The feed mechanism must provide sufficient lubrication for the saw chain to prevent friction build-up that causes overheating.

When the number of engine revolutions increases, the oil pump starts to work. A gear is started on the main shaft. The pressure in the system increases. The oil begins to move towards the tire until it touches the saw housing. There is a groove there. It is at this point that the oil supply channel is directed. This longitudinal groove is necessary so that lubricant can be supplied to the tire regardless of the stress level of the machine. The position of the tire during operation is unimportant, the lubricant, due to the presence of the groove, will flow to it constantly and evenly. On the links of the chain itself there is a hole or its own groove, from where the lubricant is distributed along its entire length. If the motor increases the speed of revolutions, then the pumping of the lubricant is also faster. Therefore, it is necessary to fill in lubricant into the electric saw only when the engine is turned off.
