How to adjust the segment mower

Segment mower for tractor: device, how to adjust and set up?

A tractor-mounted segment mower provides quick and neat mowing of vegetation, which is especially important when harvesting green fodder.

After mowing, grass doesn’t slow down, so you can mow a few more times.

However, in order for the mower to work effectively and conserve the resource of the tractor, it must be selected taking into account the characteristics of self-propelled equipment and other factors.

Service features

One of the main advantages of rotary models is that they require little or no technical knowledge for operation and maintenance. Such equipment is chosen by farmers because of its simple design and lack of need for frequent repairs. The condition of the implement will need to be monitored, because spare parts for trailed mowers wear out over time and require replacement or maintenance. Repairs are simple, and one person can do the job.

For efficient operation check lubrication, check parts for malfunctions or damage, carry out adjusting

The need for frequent maintenance of the segment mower depends on the model. Mowers for large machines may need to be cleaned on a regular basis and at the end of the season. Mower for any tractor is cleaned of dirt, grass and other stuff, reliability of the cutting blades fastening is checked. Periodically, the elements will need to be sharpened or replaced. Segmental mower

more difficult to operate, as it is more complex and laborious to attach.

Segmental mower KSF 2.1

Segmental mowers of the KSF-2 type.1 are produced by Liuberetsky (Russia, Moscow). This company is the successor of the factory Ukhtomsky and the continuer of his long-term business. the production of haymaking equipment of various types and designs.

Designation

KSF-2.The Multi-purpose mowers are ideal for mowing grass, and are especially suited to working in flat ground where grass is divided into swaths:

the mower is applicable for scheduled mowing on the territories of almost any climatic zones. provides trouble-free work with the exception of semi-desert and desert areas only.

Features, advantages and disadvantages of segment mower KSF-2.1

Advantages and disadvantages

In addition to their ability to be used in all weather conditions, the KSF-2 segment mowers.1 have a number of other advantages, for which they are appreciated by many farmers:

  • High productivity, achieved by a relatively high working speed and a large width of simultaneous capture. more than 2 meters.
  • The light weight of this mounted mowing equipment allows you to work with it even on small types of transport devices.
  • Low power consumption of the device will help to save money and does not affect the increase in the cost of hay when reducing the amount of harvesting.
  • Simple operation without hydraulics requires no additional operator staff other than the pulling tractor operator.
  • Economical purchase of the machine and its spare parts, easily available everywhere.
  • Quality work at high speed and long service life. at the end of the operating period, all you need to do is change the cutterbar and the mower is ready for the mowing season again.

ATTENTION! A disadvantage of the device is its high demand for cleanliness of cultivated area, because stones, wood or metal particles hitting the blade can put it out of order (breakage of segments, etc.).п.).

Mower design

The mower mechanism resembles an ordinary scissors in principle of operation. The cutting attachments are triangles with sharp edges of rather large dimensions (so called segments or fingers). The mower itself is called the segment mower by the name of the blades.

The segment mower design

There are fixed segments on one of the two metal bars that make up the cutting deck. the second, movable bar, connected with a stationary one, presses and cuts the grass caught between them.

The cutting blade contains the blade heads, the shoes, the friction plate and the clamps.

The blade moves over the ground and simultaneously grabs plants over two meters wide. Grass is put into the moldboard. Productivity of the segment mower is very high.

The cutting mechanism is connected by the traction bar to the frame, which is attached to the tractor linkage. According to the method of attachment to the tractor, there are different devices:

KP-F-6

As you can see from the characteristics, there are many varieties and modifications of segment mowers for tractor. There are more expensive models, capable of mowing a strip of up to 7.8 meters at a time, there are more compact models, ideal for personal, not industrial use. They also differ in price

The more expensive mowers are made in Europe, where they constantly maintain the high quality standards the whole world relies on. Domestic models are also very well made, combining a relatively low price and acceptable quality.

Principle of operation and area of application

Rotary mowers shred plants, mow and stack in even swaths or evenly across the field, which makes transporting hay much easier. Many models have a safety device that deflects the blades when they hit an obstacle. Also some of the variants have a mower blade tilt up to 45° for a cleaner cut.

Its variants differ in the number of cutting parts, attachment method and working area. Many models can be used for forage harvesting, as they are equipped with a weed chopper. The device is operated by the tractor PTO using bevel, cardan or other gears.

Rotary mowing devices are great for:

The machine is easy to maneuver and simple to operate. Its width needs to be adjusted to the volume of work and the size of the area to be mowed.

The cutting blades of a finger mower consist of two metal parts, a movable and a stationary one. The machine works like a pair of scissors. Cutting parts are in the form of sharp-edged triangles called segments or fingers. Grass is cut between the edges of the blades, is deposited in rows and is easy to gather. The double-blade fingerless mower features two moving parts that move in opposite directions. Such a device cuts cleaner, not clogged with debris.

For your information. Safety precautions must be observed during operation. The segment mower can easily handle 10 mm thick plants and 3 mm thick wire.

Mowers for mini tractor: How to attach and how to choose?

Before hitching any mower to the tractor, all bolts and mountings are checked. Mounted adapters are attached to the tractor linkage, and trailed adapters are attached through a hitch. After that, the tractor’s PTO is connected to the drive, which, depending on the model, may be a PTO or a specific gear. If the mower has vertical regulators, they must be connected to the hydraulic system of the minitractor.

When selecting a mower, you need to consider:

  • Type of vegetation to be cut. for old grass and bushes, it is better to take more powerful modifications;
  • The size and geometry of the area to be mowed. on fields located on slopes and with topographical irregularities, it is better to take trailed mowers;
  • The purpose of purchase. for primary harvesting it is better to settle on the mulcher, and for regular haymaking. on the mower with a windrower;
  • The price. popular imported brands always cost more, but in terms of functionality and durability are not inferior to Russian and Chinese manufacturers.

Disadvantages of the device

Naturally, the segment mower for the tractor also has certain disadvantages:

  • No matter what area such a device can handle, its capabilities are limited.
  • The speed of operation is quite small, which does not allow you to cope with the task quickly. It is not possible to increase the indicator.

In principle, these are all significant disadvantages of the device.

Disadvantages of the device

Naturally, the segment mower for the tractor also has certain disadvantages:

  • Whatever area such a machine can handle, its capabilities are limited.
  • Working speed is rather slow, so it is not possible to cope with the task quickly. It is not possible to increase the indicator.

Basically, these are all significant disadvantages of the device.

Technical characteristics of the machine

You know how a segment mower works. Now it is necessary to understand the technical characteristics of the product:

  • Weight of the machine: 120 kg.
  • The working width of the strip, which can capture the device: from 20 cm to 2 m.
  • Speed of operation: 1-2 ha per hour.
  • Minimum cutting height: 5 cm.

This mower can be operated by only one operator.

Check the adjustment of the mower mechanisms

Before starting the mower, it is necessary to carefully check the correctness of the assembly, adjust the mechanisms, turn them manually.

Knife position adjustment in the cutter bar.

Check that the pins are securely fastened and aligned on the cutter bar before operating the mower. It is very important that the tine plates are in the same plane. Their position is checked with the help of one or two cords stretched along the tops or bases of pro-cutting plates. All counter blades must touch the tensioned cords. Any bent pins must be straightened with a special key or lightly tap with a hammer.

in order to cut the stalks reliably, the segments must touch the shear plates at the front, and at the back base have a gap of 0.3.0.5 mm. This is achieved by bending the blade grips and pulling out the friction plates. The clearance between the blade tip and the segment and between the back of the blade and the shear plate must be within 0.3 to 0.5 mm. 0,5 mm. At these clearances, the blade should run lightly and the blade head should not have “play” in the guides.

In the extreme “dead” positions of the blade the axial lines of the segments and fingers should coincide. This adjustment (centering of the blade) is done by changing the length of the crank arm. If the machine is not centered, then because of the reduced speed of the blade in the cutting zone the segments do not cut a part of the stalks and pull them into the gap between the segments and fingers. 3 mm of misalignment between the segment axis lines and the tine axis lines is acceptable. 7 mm, depending on the design of the mower, the distance between the axes of the segments and tines is 76,2 mm and the stroke is shortened to 68 mm to reduce inertial forces during operation. Therefore, in the rightmost position of the blade, the centres of the segments should not reach the middle of the tines by 5 mm.

Cutting unit tilt adjustment.

When mowing undulating grass on uneven ground, tilt the cutting unit backwards to prevent the tines from digging into the ground. When mowing lodged grass, the cutting unit is tilted forwards so that the tines do not flatten the grass, but lift it. The cutterbar is tilted by swivelling the pivot on the pulling bar.

Adjusting cutting height of grass.

Cutting height within a range of 5. 7 cm is achieved by repositioning the inner and outer shoe slats. When adjusting, take into account agrotechnical requirements for the height of mowing and the condition of the soil surface.

Adjustment of cutting unit position in relation to connecting rod and tractor.

For proper operation of the mower it is necessary that the cutting unit be set parallel to the tractor’s rear wheel axle. In this case the blade and connecting rod work in one vertical plane. However, the cutting pressure and gaps in pivot points cause the cutting unit to move backwards. Therefore the outer end of the tine bar is moved forward by 35. 55 mm relative to the inside (mowing unit running in). Set the correct distance by turning the eccentric sleeve and adjusting the length of the crossbar at the same time. With the mower mounted on the tractor, check the run relative to a straight line parallel to the tractor’s rear wheel axle via the nose of the pin next to the inner shoe.

When the holes in the lugs of the hinge and inner shoe are developed or when the pins connecting the hinge and shoe are worn, the outer end of the cutter bar moves backwards. Return the implement to its starting position by turning the eccentric sleeve to the left.

Adjust the tension of the drive belts by moving the drive pulley with the tensioning screw.

Adjusting the pressure of the shoes on the ground.

Stable cutterbar travel is ensured by optimal loading of inner and outer shoes. Small loads on the shoes cause the cutter bar to jump on uneven terrain, and heavy loads lead to burial of the shoes. The optimum loads are: 350-450 N on the inner shoe and 90-150 N on the outer shoe. Check the shoe load with a dynamometer and adjust the tension of the levelling spring.

Adjusting the lifting mechanism.

When lifting the implement with the tractor hitch, the inner shoe should lift approx. 100-150 mm earlier than the outer shoe. This is achieved by adjusting the coupling link of the lifting mechanism. Before adjustment it is necessary to release tension of compensation spring.

The lifting height and stability of the cutter bar on the ground depends on which hole in the connecting bar the front lifting arm will be connected through. When working with T-25 tractors, front arm should be attached to the lower opening of the bar. When working with MTZ tractors. to the middle, and when working with other tractors. to the upper hole.

In order to reliably separate cut and uncut grass and to clear a path for the cutting unit inner shoe to pass during subsequent drives, it is necessary to bend the two upper bars of the field board depending on the height to which the grass is moved.

When converting mower for mowing legumes remove cutterbar from mower and in its place install cutterbar of attachment together with swath formers. On every third pin attach the stem lifter. The angle between the soil surface and the top edge of the stem lifter is set between 15-16°.

Modern mowers are represented by several types, each with its own advantages. The choice between rotary and segmental unit depends on the characteristics of the site and the goals set. Both are productive, efficient and sturdy in quality and affect the reliability of the entire machine.

Electric Equipment

Mower is used for mowing natural and grass seeded crops.

Technical information in brief.

Productivity per 1 hour of basic work. 1.25 to 2.3 ha. Working width. 2,1 m. Working speed. 6. 12 km/h. Average cutting height. 60 mm (natural grass) and 80 mm (sown grass). Tine spacing. 76,2 mm. Crank eccentricity. 32 mm. Coupled with tractors, drawbar class. 0,6; 0,9; 1,4. Weight. 225 kg.

General arrangement.

Mower consists of frame, cutting unit, connecting rods, push bar and drive unit with lifting mechanism. Technological process. during mowing the grass is cut by the cutting unit and placed on the ground in swaths.

Mower frame

Pulling rod

Fig. 2. Pulling bar with the shoe hinge and tilting device.

Cutterbar (Fig. 3)

Fig. 3. Finger cut mower cutting unit.

Position of fingers on the finger bar. contra cutting plates of fingers should be in the same plane to facilitate setting the necessary clearance in the cutting pairs.

Reinforcements can be made by bending a pin or inserting shims between the pin and the finger.

Pin spacing. must be constant and equal to 76.2 mm. Allowable deviation: 3 mm.

Gap size between pin pads. gap must not exceed 0,3 mm. A larger gap loosens the tine fixing on the tine bar, which results in a larger gap between segments and tines, and as a result the quality of grass shearing deteriorates. This may also cause breakage of the blade or pin. Eliminate this problem by pulling the tine stops back without heating.

Position of the segments on the back of the blade. the segments must be in one plane. Allowable deviation at the apexes of the segments is 0.3 mm max. Adjustment is achieved by straightening the back of the blade, the segments.

Position of blade segments relatively to fingers. clearance between cutting edges of segments and fingers must be 0. 0,3 mm at tops of segments and 0,3. 1,0 mm at their base.

Small gaps result in premature wear of segments and contra cutting plates of fingers, increased resistance to blade movement in the finger bar, which in its turn leads to breakage of parts of the cutting unit and its drive mechanism.

If the gaps are too large, the quality of cut is adversely affected, which may result in an increased cutting height and undershooting of the crop.

Achieve the necessary clearances by bending the pins. The backlash at the base of the segment often decreases to an unacceptable value due to wear of the friction plates. In this case, turn the friction plates by 180°. (if reversible) or replace with new ones.

Position of the blade head guide. the gap between the heel of the blade head and the guide must not exceed 0.3 mm. A larger gap leaves uncut grass stalks on the field surface near the inner shoe. Adjust by means of spacers.

Position of the blade holders. the play between the holders and the segments must not exceed 0.3 mm. A larger gap reduces the quality of cut of the plants and, as the knife rests on the segment, the working surfaces of the plates wear down prematurely and the resistance to blade movement in the tine bar increases. Adjust by bending the presser foot tips or adjusting plates between the presser foot and friction plates.

Position of friction plates. friction plates must touch the segments. Achieve this by bending them or using shims between the friction plates and the finger strip. Allowable gap max. 0.3 mm. The friction plates must touch the back of the blade tip. Adjust by displacement of friction plates due to increased diameter of holes for mounting bolts. If this gap is maintained, the quality of cut of the plants worsens and the back of the blade may break in this area due to fatigue caused by repeated bending.

centering of the blade. in extreme positions of the blade, the middle of the segments must not reach the middle of the fingers by the same amount on both sides, t.к. the stroke of the blade is less than the distance between the fingers. Permissible deviation should not exceed.3 mm. Failure to meet this condition will lead to a worsening of the quality of cut on the side of the pin where the segment does not reach as far as it should. this can be achieved by changing the length of the crank-arm.

Segment overrun to the outer shoe is not permissible, t.к. when placing the cutter bar in transport position, the crank arm will be in the straight position and it will not be possible to lift the finger bar vertically.

Outer shoe offset. in operation, the cutter bar must move in a frontal plane. This is achieved by extending the outer shoe forward between 35 and 55 mm (on the outermost toes) with the mower idle. In this way all dead gaps in the articulated joints of the suspension mechanism will be eliminated and the cutting unit will be in a frontal position. This is achieved by changing the length of the extension arm (spar) and also by turning the pin bar using an eccentric sleeve.

Operating features

Attachment of the mower to the tractor is carried out by fixing the longitudinal tractor linkage arms, setting the distance from the ground to their rear ends at about 40 cm and lifting no more than 65 cm. This is done to prevent lateral displacement of the mower frame relative to the central axis of the pulling unit.

When operating the machine observe the rules for safe and long-lasting operation:

  • The mower’s cutting unit must be covered with a protective mower cover.
  • The tractor must be stopped with the power take-off shaft simultaneously actuated.
  • All adjustment and cleaning work with the mower itself and especially the cutting tool is carried out at a complete stop and shut off the tractor.
  • The unit is transported with a protective shield over its tines.

IMPORTANT! Most adapted to work with KSF-2 segment mowers.1 are considered to be MTZ 80 and 82, UMZ tractors, as well as more compact units T-25 and T-40.
