Reciprocating saw which firm is better

Makita UC4030A / 5M

A relatively inexpensive saw from a leading manufacturer of quality electrical equipment. At a price of slightly more than 10,000 rubles, the Romanian assembly model differs for the better from similar analogues in the quality of materials, modern equipment, productivity and the duration of the assigned resource.

The compact tool weighing 4.4 kg is designed for intensive use. The saw is equipped with a 40 cm long universal saw bar driven by a 2 kW motor with a longitudinal arrangement.

The list of advantages:

  • convenient access to the tensioning device for tool-free chain adjustment;
  • the shape of the body developed taking into account ergonomics and industrial design and good balancing of the instrument as a whole;
  • reliable sealing of bearings;
  • constant supply of lubricant to the gearbox.

Parameter # 5. safety

Any saw for woodworking is a potentially dangerous tool. Therefore, when choosing a machine, it is so important to protect yourself from possible injuries while using the tool.

When choosing a power tool, pay attention to the presence of a lock for accidental start-up. It will protect you from danger if you do not comfortably grip the tool with one hand or, after switching on, find that you are not yet ready to work with it.

When working with a chain saw, kickback can be particularly hazardous. It occurs when the end of the bar touches the hard surface of the lumber, as a result of which the tool is sharply thrown back, and its moving chain can injure the operator.

To prevent “kickback”, modern models are equipped with an automatic brake system, which is a flap-shaped lever located under the handle

The automatic brake is activated when the hand slips, when a “kickback” occurs: when pressure is applied to the guard, a spring is activated, which activates the brake and stops the chain.

How to choose

First you need to decide for what purpose the tool is needed. If the priority is to work in the house, garden, vegetable garden, then you can choose a model for an amateur, that is, look at the “hobby” class.

This does not mean that the device will be of poor quality, it just is not designed for intensive work.

Ordinary household tools will always need “rest”, while a professional unit has a powerful resource.

You also need to pay attention to the characteristics of the device, because the functionality of the model will directly depend on them. Below are examples of what you should look at more specifically when choosing a reciprocating saw.

  • Power. This is the most important parameter, as it determines the performance of the device. The higher the power, the faster the work process will take place, and the longer the blade can be installed in the model. But there is also a downside to the coin. this is weight, as it usually increases in parallel with power. In addition, models with a large weight are prone to vibration, which means that you will most likely have to fork out for the purchase of an anti-vibration system. So there is a reason before buying to think about how thick the materials will most often have to be sawed, because the greatest cutting depth is related to the power of the device.
  • Sawing depth. In essence, this concept is the same as power. That is, knowing this factor, you can imagine how long the blade is suitable for the saw, without worrying about the likelihood of the device getting stuck in the material.
  • The maximum frequency of movement of the file. When cutting very hard materials such as stone or metal, a high blade speed is required. If you plan to use a technique for cutting different materials, then you need to pay attention to the presence of the stroke frequency.
  • Power supply type. There are two options. Either you will be working with a constantly tangling long tail, or you will choose a battery model. There are disadvantages in both options. If everything is clear with the first, then the minus of the second option is the overpriced device and its minimum power.
  • The weight. If you plan to use the tool in uncomfortable conditions, for example, when cutting garden trees, then you should pay attention to the lighter model, because it will be extremely inconvenient to hold a heavy saw “on the weight”.
  • Self-selection criteria

A fairly wide range of imported and domestic sawing equipment allows you to choose a saw for a summer cottage in all respects, corresponding to the features of the upcoming use.

When choosing the best option, the price-quality ratio, brand prestige, technical and performance characteristics are taken into account. Almost every model is assessed for operational safety, maintainability, availability and efficiency of service and repair structures.

Based on the analysis of sales, a rating list of saws that are in stable demand on the market is formed annually. Most of them are high-quality and reliable products from leading manufacturers working with modern materials and new generation technologies.

    What is a saw for??

The application is practically unlimited. Using a variety of blades. you can cut firewood, carefully cut a blank for a window frame, cut out an old door frame, cut a brick or asbestos-cement pipe, cut a metal corner.

using a reciprocating saw in hard-to-reach places cutting bricks with a reciprocating saw

The main advantage of this tool is its ease of use and its weight. Compact specimens are easily held with one hand, allowing you to work in uncomfortable positions and reach the most difficult to reach places.

    Household or professional tool?

Like any power tool, the chain saw is presented on the market for household and professional models. Professional tools are more powerful, which allows them to operate without stopping for a longer time. It is better to choose them when you need frequent use.

Most professional models are equipped with the function of maintaining a constant engine speed, as well as vibration protection and comfortable handles

The only drawback of professional chain saws is their high price, which is often several times higher in comparison with household counterparts.

Household chain saws are more designed for short-term work. The time of continuous operation of the tool is limited to 10-15 minutes, after which it is necessary to pause, giving the engine “rest”.

The simple design of these models and the use in the production of inexpensive materials can significantly reduce the cost of household chain saws.

In order not to miscalculate, before choosing a chain saw, determine for yourself the scope of the proposed work and the frequency of use of the unit. If you need a tool for seasonal work in the country, it is quite possible to limit yourself to the household option.

Parameter # 2. chain tension control

Low-profile chains are used in the manufacture of saws. Although they have lower performance, they are good in that they subject the tool to less vibration, making it safer to use.

The correct tension affects performance and safety of work, therefore, during operation, the saw chain must be re-tightened quite often.

On sale there are models in two versions of chain tension:

Milwaukee M18 FUEL SAWZALL Is NOT THE BEST Reciprocating Saw!

    • Classic. to tension the chain, the fastening bars are loosened and gently pushed with a flat screwdriver. This is a rather painstaking method, time-consuming and requires the availability of the necessary tools at hand.
    • Simplified. chain tension is achieved by loosening the nut and displacing the bar with a slider.

The saw unit in modern models is lubricated by an oil pump automatically. The pump is activated at the same time as the saw is turned on. This greatly simplifies the maintenance of the unit. The drank owner’s job is to control the oil level and add it as needed.

The presence of a lever on the side panel allows you to easily adjust the tension, the system is convenient in that it does not require the use of special tools

What to focus on when choosing

    Power

Saws with a 1.5-2 kW motor are suitable for heavy use. No material restrictions, no extra effort required. everything is easy and effortless to cut.

When carrying out repair work at home, regularly harvesting firewood and periodic processing of metal and stone, a power of 600-1000 W is suitable.

a saw for giving can have a 400-500 W motor. This is quite enough for pruning trees, organizing a barbecue or minor repairs of wooden products.

    Pneumatic

Compressed air is required to rotate the motor. Advantages. the tool is lightweight and compact. Even specimens capable of cutting a metal channel with a thickness of 5 mm. weigh less than a kilogram and are easily held with one hand.

Also, this type of drive has the possibility of continuous operation for a long time.

Disadvantage: a compressor is needed, which in turn is connected to the mains. Another inconvenience is that the air hose restricts movement somewhat, which greatly interferes in hard-to-reach places.

One of the first saws invented by man was the bow saw. It was made with our own hands, it was easy to set up, and was available to everyone. There would be canvases. One inconvenience. you need to hold it with both hands.

lightweight reciprocating cordless saw for wood

Then a hacksaw was invented, which was easily held with one hand. And the other hand held the piece of wood to be processed. So that the working hand does not get tired, a saber saw came to replace the hacksaw.

For giving. just an irreplaceable option. And cut off branches from trees, and cut firewood, and carpentry work on the site can be done without getting tired.

In fact, a reciprocating saw is a jigsaw, only the hacksaw blade comes out from the end, like a chuck in an electric drill. It is much safer to work with than a chain saw, and cuts can be made as accurately and precisely as a circular saw.

    Rechargeable

Autonomous power supply from a charged battery built into the instrument. Advantages. complete autonomy. Cordless wood saws can be taken into the forest, work on the construction of a country house that is not connected to the mains. When working in a narrow and densely packed room, the wire does not get tangled underfoot and does not cling to objects.

Now about the disadvantages. The first is price. The cost of the battery is included in the price list. The operating time is limited by the capacity of the battery. And of course the additional weight of the tool.

    saw for giving

Inexpensive, has one or two modes and relative versatility. This means that the manufacturer has provided for a change of blades for any materials. wood, stone, metal, but it will not be possible to get a high-quality cut. There are a minimum of settings. as a rule, only the speed of work.

The reciprocating chain saw is lighter in weight and is optimal for garden and summer cottages

Of course, I want to have a full set of saws at home. chain, saber, circular and jigsaw. There would only be enough money for such an assortment. However, experience shows that having acquired some skills, with the help of one universal reciprocating saw, you can perform the vast majority of work.

Flat nozzle stops have a jigsaw mode. The saw moves strictly perpendicular to the surface, making the correct shape cut.

Guides for working with cylindrical workpieces will help you to cut the pipe perfectly evenly, no worse than a machine.

The versatile, powerful saw with a long blade can easily cut firewood instead of a chain saw. At the same time, the operation of the saw is much safer.
Well, pruning trees in the garden is available only with the saber option. And if the saw is rechargeable, you will not entangle the power cord on tree trunks.

    Purpose

Professional tools are expensive. What are we paying for? For the opportunity to work without rest for a long time, protection from dust and moisture.

Also, the instrument may have additional customization options and functions that are not available to amateur models. For example. various settings of modes for different materials to be processed, fine adjustment of the speed and depth of the blade.

Expensive models can switch between pendulum and forward blade travel. As a rule, professional tools are equipped with vibration and vibration damping devices. This reduces fatigue and increases productivity accordingly.

    The history of reciprocating saws

Reciprocating saws are inherently tools for demolition, dismantling and demolition. The first reciprocating saw was manufactured by Milwaukee Tool in 1951, the tool was named “Sawzall”. The novelty was able to saw a variety of materials, including wood, PVC and metals. At its core, a reciprocating saw is a very simple tool. The motor provides a reciprocating movement of the stem, on which the replaceable saw blades are mounted. At the moment there are blades for wood, wood with nails, metal, and universal saw blades.

Time passed, progress did not stand still, and reciprocating saws acquired new functions and technologies. One of the most significant innovations was the ability to adjust the speed, which allowed the user to achieve better results, adjusting this parameter depending on the characteristics of the material being processed. The next significant innovation was the transition from rectilinear to orbital motion. Due to the orbital motion, the blade is lifted when moving in reverse position and lowered when it is necessary to transfer maximum lateral force to the blade. If you look at the saw blade from the side, you can see that it is moving in an elliptical orbit. This function works best when sawing wood, and when processing some other materials, it can cause additional vibration.

Over the past few years, manufacturers have spent a lot of effort on improving the ergonomics of reciprocating saws. These instruments are characterized by high power and considerable vibration amplitude, so the user’s hands can suffer from vibration. Most manufacturers in their new products use various anti-vibration technologies: from handles covered with vibration-absorbing materials to a system for balancing moving parts.

Overview of powerful reciprocating saws. Part 1

We decided to compare a number of powerful chain reciprocating saws from different manufacturers, and find out which model would be the best choice when buying. Tested with reciprocating saws from Bosch, DeWalt, Hitachi, Makita, Milwaukee, and Ryobi. Each tool went through a series of three tests to find out which reciprocating saw is the most advanced, fastest, and most comfortable.

Choice of saw blades for reciprocating saws

One of the nicest features of reciprocating saws is that almost all models use the same saw blade attachment, so when choosing consumables you are not tied to the manufacturer. But this conceals some difficulties for uninitiated users who find it difficult to decide on the choice of canvas, given their huge variety. For the tests, we selected the previously reviewed Milwaukee Sawzall saw blades of the s Ax and Double Duty Torch ranges.

For wood or wood with hammered nails, Milwaukee Ax saw blades work best. This blade has a frequency of teeth of 5 pieces per inch, there are models in lengths of 150 and 300 mm. Saw blades with a lower frequency of teeth allow you to cut homogeneous materials, such as wood, but the cut is coarser. The length of the blades should be selected based on the size of the sawn parts.

For cutting metal, the Milwaukee Double Duty Torch saw blade is the best choice. When processing metal, it is better to opt for blades with a high frequency of teeth. These saw blades are available in several versions (10, 14, 18 and 24 teeth per inch). During testing, we used a blade with 18 teeth per inch. Although the cutting speed decreases as the number of teeth increases, this blade provides better control and a better cutting edge.

If you need to cut, for example, PVC, the choice can again be stopped on blades for metal, but pay attention to the versions with 10 or 14 teeth per inch. During testing we used Milwaukee Double Duty Torch saw blades with 14 teeth per inch.
