How to cut chipboard at home

Rough floor finish

Subfloors are mounted from hardboard quite often, this material is especially suitable for leveling old plank floors, if work on their dismantling is not expected. In addition to obtaining a perfectly flat surface as a result, the Fiberboard layer will serve as a good heat insulator, which is especially important for residents of private houses or ground floor apartments in old high-rise buildings.

For sub-flooring, an unrefined fiberboard with increased hardness or soft fiberboard is used as a soundproofing pad. Despite the abundance of hydrophobic additives in the production of modern fiberboards, experts advise to further process them before laying. Good results are obtained by impregnation with hot drying oil in 2-3 layers. After complete drying, the sheets can be laid.

Fiberboard floor, ready for further processing

If the old subfloor is fairly flat, the hardboard is laid directly on top of it. With significant level differences (more than 10 mm), you will have to level the old floor or lay logs. In any case, the surface for laying Fiberboard is pre-treated with an antiseptic primer.

Pipe cutting at an angle of 45 and 90 degrees

If you need to cut the pipe at an angle of 45 degrees, which is more often required when laying water, heating pipes. Steel, cast iron pipes that are cylindrical in shape are often used. In installation work, rectangular or shaped pipes are used. However, you should properly cut the pipe with an angle grinder, so that later it can be easily connected. Therefore, you should carefully mark the pipe.

Some craftsmen try to mark the place of the cut using a tape measure, but we warn you that the result is likely to be negative. And for a positive result, consider the following professional recommendation.

Take a sheet of paper or cardboard, preferably A4, fold it diagonally and wrap it around the pipe where you plan to cut it evenly. The edges of the paper should be exactly aligned with each other. And the side of the paper that is closer to the end of the pipe was perpendicular to the axis. Then mark the cut line in a circle.

If you need to cut exactly at an angle of 90 degrees, then solve the problem quickly using paper or masking tape again. Wrap around the pipe so the ends match. Make even lines and saw off.

Masters advise using a square when cutting a profile pipe. To do this, apply the square in turn to the sides, and turn and mark with smooth movements. After action, fix the pipe and cut. Prepare yourself a template that will come in handy in the future and save time. It is better to do the action with an angle grinder, so the cut will be smoother.

When working with a cast iron pipe, keep in mind that it is a brittle material. Therefore, we will point out a method with which it will be possible to cut such a metal without damage.

Before starting work, make notes for the cut, just like with steel pipes. Place a piece of wood for support. Run an angle grinder around the circumference of the pipe making small cuts. Then take the chisels, insert into the groove and hit hard with a hammer. Note that bakelite-based cutting discs are used to cut cast iron pipes.

If you do not have an angle grinder at hand to cut a cast-iron sewer pipe or other purposes, use a metal hacksaw, chisels or special pipe cutters.

Cutting a gas pipe is dangerous, so it is best to entrust it to professionals. But if you are confident in your strength, then to cut the metal, take an angle grinder, welding, hacksaw, gas welding.

  • Shut off the gas riser before work. Then release the rest of the gas from the pipe. To do this, set fire to the gas in the burners and wait for it to go out.
  • After the actions taken, cut. Using the welding method, the metal base burns out when exposed to high temperature. The result is fast and effective. But remember that cutting or rooting gas pipes again requires experience.

Tools and materials

If possible, it is best to cut the chipboard with a hand milling cutter using homemade guides. This method is not very convenient when cutting large sheets, because when working with this tool, a table is required. In addition, with this method, the cutters have to be changed frequently. But as a result, you will get cleanly processed, “chamfered” edges.

Electric Jigsaw. Most Popular Cutting Tool Particle Board

Some craftsmen use a jigsaw in their work, however, in the absence of skill, it is difficult to cut exactly, and chips can form.

You can try to install a bimetallic blade with teeth, pointed inwardly, designed for laminate on the jigsaw. Cutting with a jigsaw should be increased by increasing the speed, with a small feed, so that no breaks are formed.

If such methods do not suit you, then for cutting the Chipboard at home, we will prepare for work:

  • a hacksaw with fine teeth (one that is best suited for metal work). In this case, the teeth must be divorced by 1/2 of the blade thickness and be hardened;
  • paper adhesive tape;
  • file for rough processing of the cut mowing line;
  • sanding paper for finishing the cut line.

Cutting panels at home

Sawing by hand a sheet of Particleboard or Laminated Particleboard is quite feasible. True, in this case, you are unlikely to be able to avoid the appearance of chips and burrs, but you can try to reduce their number and size.

There are several rules to follow when cutting Chipboard panels:

  • cutting sheets must be done on a flat, hard surface. Two large tables can be adapted for sawing large panels (their height must be the same!);
  • in order to exclude the appearance of chips, stick adhesive tape or good masking tape along the mowing line of the cut, which will hold the edges of the laminated layer;
  • For sawing with a hand saw, select a blade with a fine tooth. Saw teeth should be well sharpened. You need to drive the saw with slight pressure, at an acute angle to the surface, constantly monitoring its position;
  • for cutting boards Particleboard and Laminated Particleboard with a jigsaw, the line should be scratched or even cut through. It is best to use a sharp knife to cut through the durable layer of the laminate;
  • install a file with a small reverse tooth;
  • select the maximum speed of the jigsaw, turn off the “pendulum”;
  • fasten a flat rail along the mowing line of the saw cut and move the jigsaw strictly along it;
  • the jigsaw should be firmly pressed against the surface to be sawn.

All these recommendations help to properly saw and cut the chipboard, but chips, nevertheless, cannot be completely avoided.

Therefore, if it is so important to get a perfectly smooth, even cut line, without chips and saw marks, you should contact specialized workshops, where for a reasonable fee they will cut out any shape from a chipboard sheet.

Figured cutting

It is even more difficult to obtain curved surfaces of a given configuration at home, while you will have to spend additional money on purchasing a router, which will help you get rid of chips and jags formed when you cut the chipboard.

The price of a manual router can fluctuate significantly, depending on the manufacturer, power, and the availability of additional functions. If you do not plan to be engaged in the production of furniture professionally, then it is advisable to purchase an inexpensive model.

To cut the chipboard, follow these steps:

  • having marked out the contours of the necessary part on the chipboard sheet, we cut it out with an electric jigsaw, trying to cut, retreating just a couple of millimeters from the intended mowing line of the cut;
  • we make templates of the design radius from Fiberboard or plywood and carefully grind the ends with sandpaper;
  • attaching the template to the part to be trimmed, clamp it with clamps and process it with a manual copy milling cutter with a bearing, removing excess material exactly to the intended mowing line.

In this case, it does not matter which cutter (with two or four knives used). The only condition is that the knives must grasp the cut thickness being processed along the entire height. After processing, it remains only to stick the edge on the part. How it’s done. look at

Reception 1. Cut along the guide

We install a guide (tire) on the workpiece, set the cutting depth and perform the cut. As you can see for yourself, even on the outside of our chipboard blank, there are no chips, no explosions. The cut itself is even without signs of scoring or side waves. Why such difference?

Find the right drive

The cleaner you want to cut, the more teeth should be on the disc. As long as the disc is new and sharp, then, in principle, any of the four shown in the photo on the right will do.

A 140-tooth blade is good for cleanly cutting plywood, but the disadvantage is that its teeth dull much faster than those with refractory tips, especially when sawing chipboard sheets. It is better to keep such a blade in stock for critical work or when you need to make a very accurate and thin cut, and not use for everyday work.

The most convenient, however, as well as the most expensive disc with 56 teeth or the so-called laminate disc. Well, for household work and for all occasions, for example, for country crafts, a disc with 40 teeth is quite suitable.

Saw a chipboard with your own hands

There is an opinion that it will be possible to cut a chipboard sheet only on a panel saw. The technology for such equipment is simple. The bottom line is that the format saw has two sawing circles, one of them cuts the board, the other cuts right through. The cost of such a unit is high. it costs 1000-1500, which is unacceptable for an amateur. If a layman decided to make, for example, a curbstone with his own hand, then it is easier for him to make calculations and cut elements in specialized places. But if there was an error with the calculations, then you will have to re-apply to cut off the excess or a new piece.

Therefore, we will consider several options for the correct sawing of a chipboard with our own hands at home.

Old method; used in Soviet times, when it was necessary to cut a wood chipboard with your own hands with a varnish coating. It is rarely used now. A straight line is drawn along the ruler with an awl. After that, the chipboard is cut with your own hands exactly on the scratch with a hand saw. The problem is that chips can remain.

Disadvantages of the method: it is difficult to withstand the mowing line, for a long time, the probability of chipping.

Short cuts are made with an ordinary jigsaw. In this case, several conditions are met:

  • The saw blade should be with a minimum format of teeth and “from scratch”, this will ensure that there are no chips on one side and a small number of them on the other.
  • The tool feeds smoothly, without pressure.
  • The operating mode is not at the maximum level, but slightly above average.

In addition to the insignificant amount of chips, there is another disadvantage when using this method: it is difficult to maintain a strict trajectory when cutting and prevent the blade from wobbling.

For a relatively clean work, the master needs to select a zero saw blade with a fine tooth. It is more convenient to do such a cut A chipboard with your own hands than with a jigsaw. Only the number of chips on the opposite side is much greater than in the previous processing option.

Sawing is much more convenient when using guides. The use of the guide increases the accuracy of the cut and allows you to make the same pieces.

First, the master needs to make two cuts strictly along the same mowing line. For this, a cut on the tire is used. The ruler is placed along the mowing line of the marking, after which the first cut is made first, to cut the laminate, to a depth of 1 cm.In this case, the teeth should go parallel to the laminated surface, without tearing out its pieces.

Since the laminate surface is cut away, there are no more chips.

But there are a couple of drawbacks to the method: firstly, you will have to spend a lot of time marking, and secondly, it is possible to make only cuts along a straight mowing line.

Milling cut DIY chipboard

First, a workpiece is made with a jigsaw, with an indent of up to 3 mm, then the fishing line is aligned according to a pre-made template. As a rule, the second piece of the sheet is used, sawn on a formatter. The cutter is copied with a bearing. The advantages of the method are the ability to make curvilinear cuts with a clean cut. Disadvantages: a lot of time is spent on marking, filing, sawing blanks, setting a template under a milling machine. For mass production, the method is inconvenient, and not every “amateur” has the appropriate equipment.

How to Saw Chip-Free Chipboard?

Before starting to cut a chipboard, especially a laminated one, we cut a line with a sharp tool, along which we will cut and glue paper tape with a sticky layer along it. This will help to minimize damage to the decorative layer.

To keep the chips as small as possible, it is necessary to direct the movement of the hacksaw at an acute angle to the surface (no more than 30 °). Movements should be smooth, without excessive pressure on the plate and sharp jerks.

If chips still could not be avoided, we process the cut first with a file, working in the direction from the edges to the center, and then with a fine-grained sandpaper. It is also possible to mask all defects by applying a flexible profile where possible.

Sawing Chipboard. Methods and Processing Methods

[contents] If you have tried to cut a chipboard at home at least once, then you know for sure that this work is by no means easy and requires not only skill, but also a good tool. Particularly difficult to process is laminated chipboard, when sawing it often produces a lot of chips. That is why many craftsmen, faced with such a problem, come to the conclusion that it is better to saw the chipboard when buying, especially since many trading organizations provide such services and the price for them is quite acceptable.

Sawing Chipboard is carried out using precise panel saws, which will help to obtain workpieces of a given size and shape.

Modern models allow you to cut plate materials evenly, not only horizontally and vertically, but also at an angle.

In addition to cutting sheets, they will help you calculate and provide in the form of a visual video file several options for competent and economical cutting of sheet material (using special computer programs) and, if necessary, perform edging. However, if for some reason you prefer to do this work yourself, you will have to do some preparatory work before sawing the chipboard.

What You Can’t Saw Chipboard

If the volume of work is large enough and the quality requirements are low, some craftsmen advise to saw the chipboard at home using a grinder (an angle grinder, commonly called an “angle grinder”). In doing so, they use a disc designed for working with wood. To make cutting easier, a guide bar is fixed along the mowing line of the cut with the help of clamps. Sawing chipboard using an angle grinder can sometimes be seen in the video.

Attention, important! This method is absolutely unacceptable, since the probability of injury during work is very high, especially if large-diameter discs are used and the protective cover is removed from the grinder.
