How to cut particleboard at home

Sawing rules

Before sawing, choose a method, as well as accessories and tools.

  • duct tape;
  • masking tape;
  • pencil, ruler;
  • sandpaper.
  • hacksaw;
  • cutter;
  • circular saw;
  • tire;
  • jigsaw;
  • sawing machine.
  • On the end part of the chipboard, apply the dots. Determine in advance what type of cutting will be done. straight or shaped. The cutting technique is different.
  • Connect the dots in the fishing line and stick the adhesive tape on top. SawingWoodchipboard with a laminated coating, preferably using adhesive tape. It will reduce cracks when cutting, since the wooden board is subjected to a lot of pressure with the increase in temperature.
  • Saw the board. The accessory is placed at the right angle to achieve extremely flat edges. The process must proceed smoothly, rhythmically and without heavy pressure.
  • Trim irregularities and edges with a file and rasp, if necessary. The edges can be glued with a veneer of the appropriate color. This protects them and makes them look nicer.

Only after placing all the necessary tools on the table, you can start sawing.

Using a router

The router is a power tool, for hand-working wood. Suitable for grooving, shaping, edging and drilling. Before using it, a sheet of wood is sawn with the jigsaw, 3 mm from the markings. Sawing with the cutter should be together with a bearing, which forms the depth of cut to the required level. It is a time-consuming process that only experienced sawmakers can perform. High probability of crooked cuts.

The electric jigsaw

To evenly saw off the chipboard with a jigsaw without splintering, you need to choose a device with a minimum size of teeth. It is used for small areas of tile, with smooth, low-pressure movements. If you are using the jigsaw for the first time, there may be some cracks on the back side of the board. Cutting quality will improve with continued use.

Sawing with an undercut

A guide bar is needed for the process. It is fixed on the board with clamps. Trimming is done according to the marks. The guide bar is positioned along the mowing line and the cut is made 10 mm deeper. The second cut is made through. With this method, there will be no chips on either side, since the bottom side of the laminate has already been cut.

Some elements used in design ideas are not cut in a straight line, but curvilinear. In this case, a mixed type of cutting is used Woodchipboard.

Square-cutting machine

The workpiece is placed on the table and fixed in a stationary state. The necessary markings are made on the sheet and the saw unit is switched on. When the disc reaches a sufficient speed, the table moves forward with the wooden boards and hits the disc

Machines for cutting The chipboard is divided into 3 types:

  • Bed. the fastening on which the entire mechanism is based. A heavy frame adds stability to the machine and eliminates vibration. This is important for a quality cut.
  • Sawing assembly. consisting of two flat metal discs. The first one pre-saws the panel and the second one finally cuts through it.
  • Working tables. Three steps are involved in the process. The first one is for positioning the node, the second one is for feeding the boards to be sawn (movable), the third one is for supporting the sawn-off parts.
  • Carriage. allows the moving table to move. The workpiece is secured in position with a stop and rulers.

Step 1. Sawing in the guide rail

Positioning a guide on the workpiece, setting the cutting depth and making the cut. As you can see, there are no splinters or undercuts even on the outer surface of our workpiece made of particleboard. The kerf itself is even, with no signs of burrs or side waves. Why the difference??

How to bend chipboard. a practical aspect

Sometimes you need to make a bent piece of particle board. the end of a table, cabinet, shelf.

First of all, cut the required piece of material to size, and then make numerous parallel kerfs on the inner surface of the piece (see Pic. Fig. 1 и 2)

Needed fragment Cutting kerf

To give a curved shape, the resulting part should be glued to the template with PVA glue and fixed with self-tapping screws. After the time required for the glue to cure, the part can be removed and used for its intended purpose.

Before screwing self-tapping screws into the chipboard, it is advisable to pre-drill the material. To do this, drill bits with a 1-2 mm smaller diameter than the self-tapping screw are used. Drills for chipboard are used the same as for drilling wood, and self-tapping screws are bought standard.

Due to the lower cost of chipboard than other installation and construction materials, a small number of defects when working with their own hands is not critical. Spoiled sheets can be used to make smaller items, without the cost of hiring professional equipment and professionals.

We recently bought a coffee table, the price is inexpensive, but there is a “but”. The height of the table is too high for our interior. It would be nice to reduce the height of the table by about 10 centimeters. As they say, we are not looking for easy ways, decided that

I remembered that there is a specialist on our site asoleg, who made. I am, of course, far from it, but some recommendations may help. I contacted him, explained the problem and he kindly shared his secret. With his permission I publish his technique for cutting furniture chipboard without splintering.

Sawing Laminated chipboard without chips. Magical zero insert! Announcement

It turned out to be banally simple. Marking the cutting line. Then use a straight edge knife to cut through the top layer of the chipboard. Simply we run the knife several times with small effort on the mowing line of the cut. (I recommend to train on the unnecessary part of the chipboard) If you put too much pressure, the decorative layer begins to swell and get not very nice.

Next, stepping back 1-2 millimeters from the planned mowing line towards the rough part, we cut with a jigsaw or a suitable saw with teeth pointing to the handle of the saw. Make a notch on the opposite side of the cut to avoid chipping at the end of the cut. And we saw all the way through. Sawing

You need to be careful, take your time. Then, using a medium grit emery cloth attached to the block, we sand the end face of the part. If necessary, we remove the millimeter that we have set aside. My cut was almost perfect, after sanding it was not scuffed at all. In the photo you can see the difference between the left and right side of the cut. Well, accordingly, if both parts of the chipboard will be needed, cut with a knife on both sides of the cut. We measure the thickness of the cut of the jigsaw or saw and add 2 millimeters. Got the distance that should be between the cuts made with a box cutter. Cut exactly between these lines. That way you won’t have a burr on the other side. Of course you need to use a sharp tool, I use a tool.

Everything turned out great. On the finished table, my wife could not find the place where I cut.

Thank you for your help and assistance asoleg.

All sheet materials can be cut without splintering. Plywood. Laminated chipboard. laminate

Every home handyman sooner or later faces the need to cut chipboard. It can be making furniture with his hands or cladding the walls with panels Wood-fiber board or chipboard. As you know, sawing particleboard is not difficult, but to make the cut even and without splinters is not an easy task.

How to cut laminated chipboard using parquet.

Here, chips are caused by the cutting teeth, but not only in the direction of the kerf, but also on the opposite side. (Vibration from the power tool does not allow to lead the parquet perfectly straight, resulting in a skewed disk in relation to the kerf). The guide rail not only cuts the chipboard evenly, but also prevents chips on the opposite side from the sawing direction

When choosing a disk for sawing laminated chipboard pay attention to the number of teeth, the more teeth, the cleaner the cut

Basic rules

The special feature of laminated chipboard is that the material has a hard protective coating, which is a multilayer film of paper and resin, compressed under heat and pressure.The thickness of the laminated layer on laminated chipboard

is not very thick, but it protects the material reliably against moisture and mechanical damage.SawingLaminated chipboard is a difficulty, due to the fact that under the action of the cutting tool, the laminated layer is cracked, thereby deteriorating the aesthetic appearance of the sheet. The width of the chips is small, but it is not always possible to eliminate them.

READ Circular saw handheld How to choose for the home

To cut the material accurately and efficiently, it is necessary to follow the following rules:

  • To prevent the teeth of the saw from damaging the laminated layer of the material, adhesive mounting tape should be glued to the saw blade;
  • to facilitate the sawing process, the sharp blade of the knife should be scratched through the layer of lamination until it reaches the layer of chips, with the direction of the blade should be tangential, relative to the surface of the material;
  • it is important to keep the saw blade at an acute angle of 30 degrees in relation to the surface of the workpiece;
  • When using a power tool, the work should be done at low speed;
  • on the finished piece, a thin layer of the laminated part must be cut at a 45° angle;
  • After sawing the edge of the workpiece is processed file in the direction from the periphery to the middle;
  • After the edge of the cut is filed, it is either sealed with a self-adhesive melamine strip, or it can be edged in the shape of the letter C or T.

Tools and materials

If possible, it is best to cut the chipboard with a hand router, using homemade guides. This method is not too convenient when cutting large sheets, because when working with this tool requires a table. In addition, this method often have to change cutters. But as a result, you will have a cleanly finished, “tapered” edge.

The electric jigsaw is the most popular tool for cutting chipboard

Some masters use an electric jigsaw in their work, but, in the absence of skill, it is difficult to perform a cut evenly, and chips can be formed.

You could try mounting a bimetal blade with inwardly tipped teeth designed for laminate on the jigsaw. Use the jigsaw at a higher rpm and with a lower feed so that you do not make cracks.

If such methods don’t work for you, we’ll prepare you for the job of sawing Laminated Particle Board at home:

  • A fine-toothed hacksaw (the one designed for metal work is best). The teeth should be spaced 1/2 the thickness of the blade and be hardened;
  • paper adhesive tape;
  • file for roughing out the mowing line;
  • sandpaper for finishing the cut.

Making furniture with your own hands is a rational and practical solution. Especially when the in stores and furniture showrooms do not please you at all, and the furniture items presented in them do not quite fit into the interior of your home. In this case, the Internet is replete with materials about self-made furniture, which promise that it is not so difficult. Indeed, with sufficient theoretical training with the manufacture of furniture is quite possible to cope at home. And if you make furniture with your own hands, you can significantly save the family budget.

particleboard, home

And one of the most important stages of home furniture making is sawing. What affects the quality of the saw-cut, with what it can be made and under what conditions? And is it possible to do without chips, without resorting to professionals, and taking the entire process on your own? Let’s take a look at all the issues related to sawing, in order, in our instructions. And as laminated chipboard is one of the most popular and budget solutions for home furniture manufacturing, then let’s focus on this material.

Alignment sheet wood chipboard

After sawing it is necessary to eliminate that reserve. that was left behind when the marking was done. The best way to do this is with a router. But it is possible to remove the excess material with sandpaper. It is hammered on a wooden bar, which is easier to work with than a loose sandpaper. Such processing allows not only to get rid of excess material, but also to deburr the edge smoothly.

Such actions allow the best way to cut the chipboard. But, if the owner wants to increase his chances of getting a good result, he can make the cut on the slab using a guide bar. It is set along the intended mowing line of the cut.

The quality of the cut of the board is largely determined by the type of blade. First of all, it is necessary to choose the right blade for the size of the teeth. Saw blades are divided into several types:

  • A and B. these blades have the smallest teeth with a small pitch;
  • C. the teeth of the tool are of medium size;
  • D. bits have the longest teeth.

Fast and rough sawing Chipboard and wood can be done with blades of the latter type. But if you want to cut as smoothly as possible it is better to use a C, A or B sized blade that allows you to work with the material more accurately. The pitch should be 2-3 mm and the length of the jigsaw should be about 75 mm.

Standard jigsaw jigsaws have straight teeth that point in the same direction. To cut laminated chipboard evenly, it is best to choose reversible blades. They have a part of the teeth pointing up. When moving back, they undercut the material, so there are no chips on the edges.

Laminated chipboard should be sawn with a jigsaw with BM, CV and HCS steel tips

Before sawing Chipboard with a jigsaw, the selected blade should be carefully inspected. A good blade should have no traces of corrosion and defects. The high quality of the attachment is evidenced by the clear lettering and emblems on the surface, as well as the perfectly even trimming on all sides. If the jig has slightly rounded edges, oblique or blurred seals, it is made of counterfeit material.

Sawing methods Laminated chipboard without splintering

Sawing can be done with a panel saw. But its If you need to saw Laminated chipboard to make a few pieces of furniture for yourself, other methods are more suitable.

The scratch

You should scratch a ruler with an awl or a nail to the thickness of the laminate. Saw along this mowing line, making sure that the edges of the saw’s teeth hit exactly in the scratch. Sawing can be done with a jigsaw or hand-held hacksaw.

Jigsaw

Suitable for cutting a small section. Jigsaw should be with the smallest size of teeth. Move the jigsaw smoothly, without pressure, set the RPM just above the medium speed.

On the side where the teeth enter the board, there will be almost no chips, and on the opposite side, with little experience, they will appear, but in small numbers.

Circular saw

A fine-toothed saw blade is needed. Long, straight cuts are better made with this method than with the jigsaw. There will be no chipping on the side where the teeth cut into the board. If they appear, it will be on the opposite side, as in the case with the jigsaw.

The use of guide rails improves cutting precision. It is better to fix the saw on the table in this case.

Sawing with undercutting

A large ruler (guide bar) is needed, which is fixed on the workpiece with clamps. The first cut is made to trim the laminate along the scribe line. The guide bar must be set on the mowing line, and the cut must be made to a depth of 6-10 mm. there will be no splintering.

The second cut is made through. There will be no chipping at the mowing line where the teeth enter the board, and the laminate has already been cut at the exit point, so there just can’t be any.

Cutter

In this case you should first saw the workpiece with the jigsaw at a distance of 2-3 mm from the setting line and then align the line according to the template. The cutter must be equipped with a bearing. This way it is also possible to cut curvilinear cuts.

The most important factor is the clamping and guiding system of the saw blade. As a rule, in most jigsaw models, it is represented by a pendulum clamp. The forces that occur during operation can cause it to deviate from its original position. Some models such as the Festool PS300 EQ-Plus have an additional guide rail to increase the quality of cut.

Jigsaw with additional guide

In the course of work the saw is subjected to side loads, forcing it to vibrate and bend. As a result, the blade deviates from its original position and results in an uneven cut.

In addition, the following factors influence the accuracy of the cut:

  • thickness of material being sawn. As the area of contact between the saw and the material to be worked increases, the friction force increases, which heats up the blade, increasing its deformation;
  • material structure. The homogeneity of the material to be sawn has a direct effect on cutting accuracy. Internal stresses in it constantly tend to deflect the jigsaw blade from its straight direction;
  • saw quality. Material of manufacture, compliance with hardening technology, angle of inclination and sharpening of the teeth directly affect the result of the work;
  • Speed of work. While sawing workpieces, many users press the jigsaw too hard in an attempt to speed up the sawing process. The result is that it deviates from the set trajectory.

Sawing Particleboard Processing Methods and Approaches

[If you have ever tried to saw chipboard at home you know that it is not an easy job and not only requires skill, but also a good tool. Laminated chipboards are particularly difficult to cut, as they are very prone to splintering. That is why many masters, faced with such a problem, come to the conclusion that it is better to saw particleboard when buying, especially since many trade organizations provide similar services and the price for them is quite acceptable.

The cutting of chipboard is done with the help of precise formatting and cutting machines, which help to obtain blanks of a given size and shape.

Modern models allow you to evenly saw board materials not only in the horizontal and vertical direction, but also at an angle.

In addition to cutting sheets, you will be helped to calculate and provide in a visual video file a few options for competent and economical sawing of sheet material (using special computer programs) and, if necessary, will perform edging. However, if for some reason you prefer to do the job yourself, you will have to do some preparatory work before sawing Particleboard.

Good sawing techniques for home use

It is important to use the right disc. For stationary machines, circular saw blades for longitudinal sawing differ from cross saw blades in tooth shape and sharpening angle. For handheld circular saws, there is no such fundamental distinction. You can use one blade for sawing lengthwise and crosswise.

At the same time, the disc for longitudinal and cross cutting should be “sparse toothed”, have few teeth from 12 to 24, depending on the disc diameter and model. Blades with small, fine teeth are made for a clean cut, but they cut slowly and overheat on a longitudinal cut.

Thickness of blade depends on workpiece. Thin saw blade cuts faster, less wood is selected and the load is reduced. But on thick hardwoods, a thin blade can overheat, “turn blue,” lose its hardening, and fail. Thin blades also tend to move aside from marking, to “wiggle” the kerf.

In contrast to stationary circular saws with motors with power up to 5 kW (10 kW and more on industrial ones) and considerable inertial acceleration of the shaft, electric hand saws have smaller power reserve. That’s why they cut leisurely, calmly, not allowing the RPM to drop and the engine to overheat.

90 and 45 degrees

All manual circular saws have a tilting platform. Due to this, it is possible to saw at an angle of 90 to 45 degrees. On some models even at a steeper angle.

Setting the right angle is simple: the screw is released, the desired angle is set on the arc with degrees, the screw is fixed. Remember, however, that the maximum cutting depth is reduced when sawing at an angle. For example, if at a right angle it is possible to saw a billet 60 mm thick completely, then at an angle only 45 mm.

Sawing at an angle is more difficult because the blade cuts the wood fibers also at an angle, which increases friction and resistance. The teeth of the disk must be sharpened, otherwise the wood might burn, turning black. Otherwise sawing at an angle is carried out in the same way as the above described straight sawing.

Bar 150h150 and 100h100 along

Depth of kerf hand circular saws can not cut through the material thickness of 10-15 cm. Maximum for most models. 60-75 mm. However, you can cut a 100×100 or even 150×150 timber along its length by making two cuts from the opposite sides.

Sawing is done along the guide bar, just like when sawing a sawn board. Then the bar is turned over 180 degrees and the second cut is made. There will always be an unevenness at the joint of kerf. This can not be avoided.

Even if the bar is straight and the kerf is precisely on the guide. The deviation of opposite surfaces of the bar in 1-2 degrees is enough, and there is unevenness on the joint kerf. And such deflections are unavoidable even because of the lint on the wood.

Problems of such sawing: disc is completely hidden in the array, tooth tips do not come out and do not cool in the air, friction is maximal on the whole area of the disc, emission of sawdust is difficult. Therefore, there is a high probability that the disc and motor will overheat.

The best sawmill for such tasks is a chainsaw, the costs are low and the results are good, especially the cutting accuracy and performance.

Sawing with interruptions, making sure then that the disc and the engine do not overheat. This type of cutting is not appropriate for manual circular saws and is done on sawmills or stationary circular saws. If necessary, it is possible to cut several large cross-section bars, but the manual circular saw can not operate for a long time in this mode.

Laminated chipboard and chipboard without chips

For sawing laminated particleboard sheets (Laminated Particleboard), as well as fiberboard, special machines with an additional trimming blade are used. If you do not have such a machine in your home workshop, you can use the principle of its operation and saw the sheets with a regular circular saw.

Operating principle of the circular saw blade: it makes a shallow cut of 1-1,5 mm in the cladding and in the opposite direction of rotation. Then the main saw blade finishes the cut. Masters tried to saw the laminated chipboard with ordinary hand and stationary circular saws on the same principle, as follows:

  • The position of the support platform sets the cutting depth of 1-1,5 mm.
  • Make the cut so that the saw blade cuts backwards. A manual circular saw is turned “backwards”; on a stationary circular saw the sheet is started from the reverse side.
  • After sawing the cladding the sheet is finished in the usual way, on the same side that was used to make the shallow cut. At the same time, the depth of cut is set so that the disc comes out of the sheet to the height of the tooth.

The method may not be suitable for some types of laminate. For example, the “vitreous” coating on old Soviet furniture behaves differently when sawing than the more resilient laminate. That’s why it is advisable to make a test cut on a redundant workpiece.

There are other ways to make a cut without damage.

  • Tape or self-adhesive tape over the kerf. During the sawing process the adhesive tape holds the edges of the laminate and prevents the pieces of the surfacing from tearing out. The method does not always work, a lot depends on the type of laminate, the disk, the speed.
  • Make a future kerf by cutting through the laminate with a sharp tool. It might help if you manage to cut through the veneer and then run the blade exactly where you cut it.

Plywood without splitting

Plywood tears out from underneath the kerf when sawing. This is because the pressure of the tooth from above holds the plywood particles together with the lower layers of the board. The bottom plywood layer, on the other hand, doesn’t hold anything back, and rips and chips are possible on it. This can be avoided by sawing in exactly the same way as described above for laminate sheets Particleboard and Fibreboard.

It is desirable to use a universal or special disk with small, frequent teeth. They create a more even load than the fine toothed discs and are therefore less likely to chip.

Cut Melamine With No Chips

If the circular saw has a speed control function, they are set to maximum. The higher the speed of the blade, the less it tears the material.

Logs on planks

Sawmills are designed for sawing logs. You can dissolve a small amount of logs with a diameter of 15-20 cm with a circular saw in case of emergency.

For this purpose from two opposite sides of a log the review or a slab is removed (with the axe, the circular saw with a big disk, a chain saw, powerful Fuggan) so that surfaces were even, as at a bar. The final result is a carving block or plank that looks like a thick unedged plank, or a beam cut on both sides.

Next, the material is sawn in the same manner as described above, as a bar 100×100 or 150×150.

The operation is labor-intensive, low-productivity. Correct board geometry is difficult to achieve and the tool is highly stressed.

How to cut an unedged board?

Cutting a board review with a hand-held circular saw can be done in two ways:

  • According to markings with a pencil (marker, sharp instrument, etc.).д).
  • along a guide rail. To do this, a small bar, an angle or the factory guide rail is screwed to the board with screw clamps or self-tapping screws. Sawing by pressing the edge of the saw platform against a guide.

Sawing along a guide will generally give you a flatter cut.

How to cut fiberboard at home?

The easiest way to cut PVC. But an unusual kitchen knife or cobbler, only a molar knife is needed here.

Its blade, while new, is very thin and sharp. And when it blunts, the blade can be replaced in a moment. By biting off a part or inserting a new one. An ordinary knife is inconvenient, it can not be sharpened quickly. Also, it won’t be as thin.

The molar knife is limited in what it can do. You can only cut a panel lengthwise. Of course, you can try to make a crosscut as well. But nothing good will come out of it.

How to cut the panel lengthwise? It’s hard to explain in this article. However, it is possible to describe the basic principle.

The blade extends a short distance of 3 mm.

On the back side of the panel choose a place where the cut will be made.

Then we cut a strip from rib to rib (we are talking about the internal ribs of the panel). You make a slit near the edge and then make another slit near the neighboring edge. We make the cuts along the whole length.

A strip of plastic will fall out and a groove will form.

Then you have to make a shallow cut on the same back side near the desired rib. And use it to break the body.

The molar cutter has the advantages of being fast, quiet and easy to use. And its disadvantages are that the panels can only be cut lengthwise.
