I will make a reservation right away that you do not need to completely remove the trimmer head to replace the fishing line. In this article I will tell you how to completely remove or replace the cutting head using the example of the BlackDecker GL716 electric trimmer.

What types of woods are there

The most common type of line, suitable for almost all types of round cord reels. This is an ordinary fishing line, suitable for cutting succulent grass, but it will be much more difficult to cut dead wood with it, and even more so it will not cope with shrubs.

As a rule, the diameter that can be used to cut young grass does not exceed 1.6 mm. The thicker the thread, the more coarse grass it is able to overcome.

There are fishing lines with sharp edges in the form of an asterisk or a square, this option is more adapted to mowing dry grass precisely due to the existing sharp edges, but its disadvantage is greater wear and is inferior in strength to a round cord.

There are fishing lines with improved aerodynamics with characteristic dents, scales and notches, such a product makes less noise, but it is used only on lawn mowers, since it is difficult for such a thread to come out of the reel, it is used most often with discs into which segments are inserted. The disadvantage of such a product is its fragility.

Most often in gasoline trimmers with an engine with an output of more than 1.5 hp. Use cords with a metal cable inside.

This thread is ideal for cutting dry grass and small bushes. The presence of a core has a positive effect on the wear resistance of this material.

The disadvantage of such a cord is its price, which is significantly higher than the listed opponents.

How to change the line in the trimmer and which one is better to choose

how to remove the trimmer head

Since we considered the choice of a trimmer in the previous article, today we will tell you how to properly fill the trimmer with fishing line, and which one is better to choose based on the working conditions.

After you bought a trimmer and began to actively use it, sooner or later the question of replacing the fishing line will arise, since this is the most wearing element in the tool, then intensive use of the trimmer will lead to frequent replacement of consumables.

How to remove or tuck the line into the trimmer

It will take about 10-15 minutes to wind the line. What is a trimmer coil? Plastic body with a cassette inside, which has a special hook for easy winding of the fishing line.

Almost all trimmer reels have a similar fastening principle, this is a central screw-button, when pressed, it becomes possible to pull out the line of the required length. The photo below shows a few examples of different trimmer spools.

The bobbins of the trimmers, the motor of which is located near the ground, have a different attachment to the axis of rotation, they have two buttons on the spool located on the sides that need to be wrung out, otherwise the replacement of the thread is no different from other cassettes.

The principle of correct winding of the fishing line is similar in all of the above cases, therefore, for example, consider the standard version with two antennae.

To remove the spool with the fishing line, you need to unscrew the screw located in the center, but note that the thread is left there, so you will have to turn it clockwise, this was done on purpose so that during operation it does not open under the influence of centrifugal force.

Next, using a screwdriver, disassemble the head and remove the spool onto which the fishing line is directly wound.

Having measured the required length and folded in half, you need to tuck the line into the spool, eventually bringing its ends opposite each other (for this there are special slots for fixing)

After that, it is necessary to assemble the head in the reverse order, threading the ends of the cord into two corresponding holes.

If you have doubts or it is not entirely clear how to load the line on the trimmer, we recommend that you look at: how to properly wind the line into the lawn mower.

In this video, step by step, the instructor will open the trimmer head, measure the required amount of line, usually from two to four meters, and demonstrate assembly and installation on the trimmer.

How to remove the crown from the watch?

Almost every home has a broken clock that can still be repaired. This work is painstaking, routine, but feasible. The main task during repair is the problem of how to remove the crown from the watch.

  • To get started, you need several containers no larger than a matchbox. The capacity will be needed to fold the disassembled parts into them. In order not to lose the desired part in the future, the boxes must be arranged in a certain order of parsing. Find a well-lit place where no one will disturb you. It is advisable to lay a white sheet on the work surface, it increases the light reflection and reduces the risk of loss of details.

Also find out how to change the glass of a wristwatch.

Set the strap aside, it will not come in handy yet. Open the case with a sharp tool. If the body connection is threaded, then it is necessary to clean the accumulated dirt and unscrew the ring. Loose parts of the mechanism, plastic segments, metal rings must be pulled out. And now remember the picture very carefully, and it is better to take a picture to facilitate the assembly process later.

Place the glass on the paper. Take out the factory lever. Do not unscrew it. There is a small bolt near the hole that goes into the shaft. Using a tool with a tapered end, press the pin slowly and pull the head to the side.

Carefully pull the mechanism out of the case and immediately put the head with the lever in place. Take your watch without catching the hands. Pressing lightly on the point, insert the crown. In some models, the head has a screw connection, where the screw turns half a turn.

How to remove the crown

Prepare a workplace where you will disassemble the watch. Place a large white sheet on the table, place a desk lamp with a sufficiently bright light. Place a few boxes in front of you in which you will fold all the parts of the movement so as not to lose. In this case, it is necessary to fold the structural elements separately, which will later make it much easier to put back the watch. You can also prepare a camera. Do not rely on memory alone; take pictures of each stage of disassembling the mechanism.

Detach the bracelet from the watch and set it aside with the screws. Examine the structure of the watch case. If it is fastened with snaps, then use a thick-bladed screwdriver or knife to hook the fastener and open the case. If the body has a thread, then first you need to clean it from dust and dirt accumulated during the time. This can be done with gasoline, do not use water, which can corrode the mechanism.

Unscrew the threaded ring with powerful tweezers. Having opened the case, first carefully examine the movement and take a picture, after that you can get it out after removing the crown.

Place the watch face down on a piece of paper. Examine the crown. Do not try to unscrew it. Examine the place where the winding shaft enters the watch case. Some models have a small dot-shaped pin near this point. It is necessary to press it with a convenient tool and at the same time pull the winding lever to the side. As a result, the head will be detached. There are also models of watches in which a screw is installed instead of a pin. In this case, it is necessary to turn it half a turn and calmly take out the crown.

Place the crown back into the watch movement as soon as you remove it from the case. You will need it later when analyzing other details. This element is inserted in the same way as it is removed.

How to remove the crown on a watch

Prepare some small boxes, such as matchboxes. They are needed in order to fold all the watch movements separately. At the same time, it is necessary to arrange them in order so as not to get confused about what and what went on. Sit back at the table. Install a desk lamp. Place a white sheet of paper in front of you. It is necessary to carry out all operations on the parsing of the clock on it. It will not only allow you to quickly find a dropped part, but also acts as a light reflector to increase illumination.

Remove the bracelet from the watch, which will only interfere with work. Take a thick-bladed screwdriver, powerful tweezers or knife and open the case with this tool. If it is made with a thread, then it is necessary to carefully remove the clogged dirt and unscrew the threaded ring. Remove any loose metal rings or plastic inserts from the housing. At this stage, it is advisable to photograph the structure, so that later it would be easier to assemble it back. Examine the mechanism.

Flip the watch glass side down and place it on a piece of paper. In order to get the mechanism out of the case, you need to remove the winding lever. Do not try to unscrew it. Look for a small dot-shaped pin on the movement. It is usually found near the hole where the winding shaft fits. Using tweezers or a cone screwdriver, press down on the pin and gently pull the crown to the side.

Remove the movement from the case, and then immediately replace the crown with the lever. To do this, take the watch gently in your hands so as not to damage the hands, press the pin and insert the crown. Some watch models have a special screw instead of a pin, which turns half a turn in order to get the crown out.

The different types of trimmer heads are their pros and cons.

In my work, I used three types of trimmer heads.

I will dwell on their description, pros and cons.

First. With manual line pulling.

I can’t say anything bad about her. The disadvantages of this head include the following moment: to pull out the line, you need to manually unscrew the lamb by 2 turns and then tighten it. If you unscrew it by 3 4 turns, then the head pressing mechanism may fall apart. Collecting it is not a problem, but it all takes time.

The trimmer head with center button is commendable. Highly recommend. The process of pulling the line is reduced to pressing a button and pulling the line mustache. Fast and efficient. The disadvantages include the fact that sometimes the latches are released and the head disassembles itself. I’ve had it like this two times and all because I did not fully click the latches. I think that over time the clamps will loosen and self-disassembly of the head will occur more often. When mowing the grass and once hit the ground with a button and my mustache came out of the head by itself. I can’t say it’s a plus or a minus. This will erase the button and, on the other hand, do not have to stop to manually pull the line.

The third trimmer head is, by and large, my headache.

Bought for her price. Twice as high as the rest of the heads. And received. Twice as many problems. In my opinion, merits. Not.

Problems: the head is disassembled according to the instructions by hand. In fact, you have to use a knock-out nail or pin. The line has to be cut into 2 pieces, and not wound, bending in half. When screwing onto the mower, you must use a locking pin and a key, which is inconvenient. Since when tightening other heads, only the locking pin is used. The trimmer head itself is heavy, large and useful line length is reduced. Because of this, the line bends more easily and mows worse. This statement is that it mows worse. Purely subjective opinion. I don’t like the head, that’s why it mows worse for me. Really. There are no such strong differences, but still it is inconvenient to climb up somewhere because of its size. The biggest problem. It is that she chops the line near the exit from the head. Therefore, in order to get the line, you need to completely remove the head from the mower. And this is, in total, from 5 to 10 minutes. Other heads can be disassembled without removing them from the mower.

The reason for cutting the line is that the hole is plastic, not metal like on other heads. As a result, for one line break in other heads there are 10 breaks on this head, and if we talk about the sections, the first heads tear the line once in 3.4 sections, and this head 3-5 times in one section.

DIY trimmer coil repair

The trimmer, whether petrol or electric, is the only solution for mowing grass in hard-to-reach places that a wheeled lawnmower cannot handle. As a cutting tool in trimmers, metal knives or a special line are used, which is tucked into the trimmer coil. But, unfortunately, the trimmer heads become unusable over time during operation. Some malfunctions can be corrected by hand, and some require a complete replacement of the mowing head.

Trimmer coil device

Trimmer mowing heads come in a variety of designs, both simple and complex. The picture below shows an exploded view of the semi-automatic trimmer head from a Husqvarna (Husqvarna) lawn mower.

This type of head is present on most lawn mowers and trimmers, such as Stihl (Stihl), Patriot (Patriot), Champion (Champion), Bosch (Bosch), Huter (Huter) and others. The device of the mowing head is quite simple. It includes the following details:

  • Mowing head base;
  • Button for semi-automatic cord feeding;
  • Bobbin (spool) into which the line is tucked;
  • Spring;
  • The eyes through them the line comes out;
  • Trimmer head cover;
  • Fishing line (cord).

There are also simpler trim heads shown in the following photo.

All these attachments do not allow you to change the length of the line in a semi-automatic mode (after pressing a button). If the cord breaks, you have to stop the mower and change it manually.

How to remove the spool and replace the line

Trimmer owners, mostly beginners, find themselves in confusion, bordering on panic, when they need to change the cutting tool or line in the reel. Very often, when trying to unscrew the mowing head, users simply render it unusable, not suspecting that it is unscrewing in the opposite direction. To prevent this from happening, if you need to replace the tool, we recommend that you read the step-by-step instructions below.

  1. Stop the mowers engine or power off the trimmer before threading the spool to avoid injury from accidental starting rotation of the cutter.
  2. Unscrew the nozzle attached to the gearbox shaft. To do this, the shaft must be fixed by aligning the holes on the washer and on the axle, and inserting a metal rod or screwdriver into them.
  3. Unscrew the nozzle. Be aware that the thread on the shaft is left-handed. Therefore, turn the trimmer coil to the right, that is, clockwise.
  4. Disassemble the mowing head. Most often, the head cover is attached with clips. To remove it, you will need to sink these latches into the case, pressing the edges of the cover. If your trimmer has a semi-automatic mowing head with a button on the bottom, then the disassembly of the attachment should be done carefully, since you can lose the spring, which sometimes flies out when the cover is removed.
  5. Cut off the required amount of line. Usually its length is 5 meters. Use a cord of the same diameter as indicated in the instructions for the tool. It is not recommended to exceed the maximum line diameter as this will result in increased engine stress and higher gas mileage.
  6. Find the midpoint of the line by folding it in half. You will have a loop.
  7. Special grooves are cut inside the coil (there may be holes). Insert a loop of line into this slot.
  8. Wind the line around the spool by turning it counterclockwise. It is necessary to fill in the cord as evenly as possible, the turns should lie down without overlapping and with good tension. When the winding is complete, leave the free ends of the line about 20 cm long and fix them in the grooves on the sides of the reel.
  9. Assemble the mowing head. Remember to insert the spring and washer (if equipped) before final assembly of the accessory. Place the spool in the body and thread the ends of the cord through the holes or eyelets.
  10. Put on the cover and secure it with the latches.
  11. Screw the adapter back onto the gearbox shaft, also securing it with a screwdriver. You will need to twist the trimmer coil to the left (counter-clockwise).
