Polypropylene tube is inserted into the brush from a vacuum cleaner, but because of the significant difference in diameter we use an adapter sleeve, such as rubber from car assemblies (you may have to adjust its inner and outer diameter, which I advise to make a little cone for ease of assembly), also fixing screw.

First put the sleeve tightly on the pipe, then finally adjust it to the inner diameter of the brush.

On the chassis we mount a shield made of thin sheet metal (the lower part of the body of the video player), as well as the motor on brackets of metal strips 3-4mm thick.

The shield prevents the flight of stones and grass, but it is desirable to wear safety glasses and closed shoes when mowing.

The impeller of the fan, similar to the impeller of the section from the suction unit of a vacuum cleaner, is mounted above the shield, so that the air is sucked into the electric motor from above, and is ejected by the impeller from below, contributing to good cooling. Make a hole in the shield for the motor shaft, I just punched it with a few strokes of my screwdriver. The hole is rough-edged and asymmetrical, as it turned out later on this solution helps self-cleaning of the shaft from the wrapped grass. At high RPM of the motor shaft the use of solid metal blades can be dangerous. it is unlikely that the hobbyist has the possibility to choose the necessary metal, and the use of unknown metal can cause serious injury. That’s why we equip the mower with a cutting unit with a fishing line. About the attachment unit of the fishing line (working body) I will write a special note. Several variants were tried out. Who has the opportunity to buy a ready-made knot from the factory trimmer, with a spool. probably the best way out. I haven’t had that opportunity. I have checked the following: a lid from a jar of baby food, a polyethylene canning jar lid (the method was found on the Internet, and according to the author, it gave excellent results), two washers, 1.8 mm dia was clamped between them and others. The line for the trimmer was either torn or wound up on the shaft, or cut through the walls of the attachment node in a matter of minutes. So it was decided to make the knot out of metal. I chose a part from an old, disassembled video player, the rotating part of the video head, in the picture it is a shiny part with circular lines.

The central hole is drilled to the diameter of the existing screw to the motor shaft or adapter sleeve. At me it is 8 mm.

After experiments with the green line 1.8 mm, which showed insufficient “vitality”, and was also weak for cutting hard grass, a red line for the trimmer 4 mm was installed. One piece of trimmer line is simply threaded through the holes in Ф4 (the holes are informative and drilled so that the trimmer line enters with the greatest possible friction). The edges of the hole should be rounded as much as possible, as this is where the trimmer line will be cut, for a “role model” look at how this is done on the factory trimmers and lawnmowers.

  • Next, it will be necessary to secure the chainsaw by removing the saw headset from it in advance. The tool should be fixed firmly on the frame;
  • Then it will be necessary to cut a steel plate along the contour of the finished body. It must be installed over the chainsaw. The result will be a reliable metal casing, which will protect the saw from moisture and grass;
  • The next step is to screw the pipe with the cutting blades of the homemade mower to the drive sprocket of the chainsaw maker;
