Adjusting the carburetor on a Husqvarna 372HD chainsaw

Adjusting the carburetor on a Husqvarna chainsaw

A company called Husqvarna was founded in 1687. “Husqvarna (Husqvarna) is a favorite in the production and garden equipment market. It comes from a Swedish group, which incorporates several companies. Producing everything from small sewing machines to impressive quad bikes.

“Husqvarna offers its customers a very wide range of special equipment. In recent years the company has increased the number of patented innovations. “Husqvarna stands firm for progress.

The brand’s products make hard work a regular activity, without harming people or the environment.

Husqvarna 137″ chainsaw belongs to the category “forest professionals. Together with this model the manufacturer also produces universal chainsaws, blowers and pruners. All products are small in size and easy to operate. All Husqvarna chain saws have three distinctive features. the ability to absorb excessive vibration, an advanced air filtration system, and the highest power.

Features of the Chinese chainsaw carburetor device

Their design and parameters vary, depending on which chainsaw and model they are designed for. They are all virtually identical to the original carburetors in design, but not always in quality. You can’t consider all Chinese products today as 100% junk. In its turn quality, they can be divided into three groups:

  • Low-quality. Unsuitable alloys are used which oxidize, crumble and break. There is no exactness of fit, calibrated holes do not correspond to the required values which leads to overconsumption or shortage of fuel in the combustion chamber. Critical components fail quickly. Plastic parts quickly become coarse or on the contrary soften from gasoline and stop working. Axles and wire rods bend, fastener threads break. Such products are cheaper than others. They are made in semi-custom factories, on adapted equipment. As a rule, they are not named or labeled.
  • Medium quality carburetors. These are factory assembled products. Alloys are not spared here; there is in-line production with quality control. These are quite serviceable carburetors that can have an even longer life than an entire chainsaw.
  • Quality carburetors. First of all, these are the products of world manufacturers, whose facilities are located in China. Geographically they can be considered as Chinese, but they are made according to the technologies of the company. the brand owner, which values its reputation. For example, in China the Japanese carburetors Walbro are produced.

In addition, among Chinese manufacturers there are those who rely on high quality. They invest heavily in powerful production facilities, register their own brand and work on its reputation.

Owners reviews

I have been using Husqvarna 240 series chain saw for six years now. It would be ok, but the machine is not adapted to our climate, it has serious problems when it is cold. The engine is excellent, but it is sensitive to fuel quality. The start system is tight, has already repaired three times, each repair costs at least 600. Sasha

I bought Swedish Husqvarna 440 saw for 10000, it took another 800 to return it to working condition. A tool worthy in all respects, but expensive to repair. I didn’t like the chain tension adjustment system, but I was pleased with the accurate throttle control. Vadim R.

The carburetor’s purpose, design and principle of operation.

The carburetor is needed to prepare the air-fuel mixture to power the engine. If the proportions in this mixture are wrong, the motor is disturbed. If the mixture is not proportional to the amount of fuel, it is called oversaturated, and if it is short of fuel, it is called lean. Both of these things work adversely to the engine.

In different models of chainsaws carburetors differ in design, but in principle they are similar. Air flow with high velocity moves through the air duct. The damper, which closes the channel, allows you to change the speed of the air jet. Fuel is fed into the channel through the nozzle, where it mixes with the incoming air to form an air-fuel mixture. The resulting mixture flows into the engine.

The pressure in the float chamber, where the fuel is before mixing, is almost equal to atmospheric pressure. But a vacuum is created in the air duct, so the fuel is drawn into the air flow. The more the choke is opened, the faster the air moves and the more fuel is drawn in. This is a simplified representation of the carburetor principle.

For efficient, smooth operation and maximum power output with economical fuel consumption, the chainsaw carburetor needs to be tuned. Before adjustment, check the fuel and air filters. they must be clean. Most chain saws have three adjusting screws: idle, high rpm, low rpm. The correct setting of the carburetor is indicated by such signs:

  • The chain doesn’t move when idling.
  • The engine accelerates smoothly and quickly.
  • The sound of the running engine is smooth, similar to the sound of a four-stroke engine.

Care should be taken when adjusting the carburetor, as errors in settings can have very serious consequences, up to and including engine malfunction. If you are not a hundred percent confident in your abilities, you need to contact a service center.

Consumer reviews

You can adjust your Husqvarna 142 chain saw yourself. This feature is considered by consumers as a plus, as well as the fact that the crankshaft is made of forged steel. The rather easy access to the air filter should also be considered an advantage. The ignition system is durable and simple. Piston group has two compressor rings that provide extended operating life. The manufacturer emphasizes that they will be ready to last up to 5 years.

Consumers also like the fact that the cylinder sleeves have a chrome wear-resistant coating. You may not have to adjust the Husqvarna carburetor, because, according to the manufacturer, it is the best in its class. The design is also good because it has a built-in primer. It is a pump that gives the engine a quick start. This feature is independent of ambient temperature.

How the Husqvarna carburetor works

To successfully set up a Husqvarna chainsaw carburetor you must know its construction and understand how it works. It really isn’t as complicated as it sounds.

The carburetor has a built-in fuel pump, which is responsible for transporting the mixture of gasoline and oil, as well as a diaphragm, a needle valve with a cam. Their joint work allows the dosage of fuel to the main chamber and the two flaps.

One of the throttle valves is designed to regulate the fuel flow into the cylinder when the throttle is depressed, it is called a throttle valve, the other is responsible for limiting the air supply from the air filter to facilitate starting a cold Husqvarna chainsaw. At the moment when the operator closes the air supply to the carburetor with the air damper, the fuel mixture is depleted and its supply to the cylinder is increased, due to which the chainsaw starts much easier than when the cold start is carried out in normal mode.

The Husqvarna carburetor has a nozzle that sprays fuel and prevents air from getting into the main chamber. Often problems with the operation of the saw can be caused by defects in this very element. For example, the valve, with improper storage of the chainsaw can jam, the fuel supply will stop, making the engine impossible to operate. Also irregularities in the operation of nozzles can become a reason of air suction in the carburetor’s main fuel chamber. In such cases, adjusting the position of the adjusting screws will not correct the situation, you will need to repair or replace the unit.

For the adjustment of the quality and quantity of mixture, as well as the number of revolutions of the crankshaft in idle mode are responsible three adjustment screws installed in the carburetor housing:

  • Screw (L). adjusts amount of fuel in low and medium rpm mode;
  • (H). responsible for traction at high rpm and its quantity;
  • (T). changes the throttle damper position, thereby regulating the amount of fuel mixture entering the cylinder and engine operation of the tool in idle mode.

Screws (L) and (H) should not be adjusted without some knowledge and experience. Incorrect adjustment of fuel mixture quality and quantity may cause the engine to stop working or not work properly, leading to rapid wear or even seizure.

Signs and causes of poor performance

Signs of malfunctions of the chainsaw carburetor:

  • The engine starts poorly and throttles quickly. Possible cause: depleted mixture.
  • Excessive (more than normal) fuel consumption. also, intensive (more than usual) exhausts. Possible reason: oversaturated mixture.
  • The engine does not want to run at all. There are two reasons: no petrol (the fuel plug is clogged) or no spark (spark plug is faulty, the high-voltage wire is broken or the electronic unit is out of order).

Setting failure by itself is rare and the reasons are usually as follows:

  • Failure of the regulating screw fasteners from a defective (damaged) cover of the protective casing. Possible cause: sloppy touching, attempting a rough adjustment, or strong external vibration.
  • Wear of piston group. Of course, carburetor adjustment will not help much here. Think about repairing the engine or replacing the saw.
  • Contamination of carburetor. Probable cause: breakage or unsatisfactory condition of air filter, use of low-quality fuel, ingress of scale, smallest sawdust, etc. into fuel ducts. д. In such cases, first of all flushing of the whole fuel system is made, and then. adjustment.

What is a carburetor??

A carburetor is a device that has the following functions: mixing gasoline and air, creating a combustible mixture to power the engine, and regulating its flow. Husqvarna carburetor parts are made by casting with various alloys and then machining them to shape the carburetor. This assures the high quality of Husqvarna carburetors, which you can see by purchasing this part in “220 Volt” store.

It is an indispensable element of many garden tools, such as chainsaws, brushcutters, lawnmowers. In some situations, such as poor fuel filtration, the carburetor can fail. Fortunately, this will not be a reason to spend money on a new tool, because you can buy a carburetor separately (both regular and assembled).

A carburetor is a device designed to prepare a combustible mixture of liquid fuel and air, which ensures the operation of carbureted internal combustion engines.

Modern carburetors have many different devices and systems, with numerous holes of different calibers, an extensive network of channels, pneumatic chambers and lever gears.

The carburetor is one of the main components of any engine-powered appliance. To ensure normal and stable operation of the technique should be periodically checked and, if necessary, make adjustments to the carburetor.

Chainsaw carburetors have three adjustment screws. The “L” screw is for low speed regulation, the “H” screw is for high speed regulation and the “T” screw is for idle speed regulation. Thus, with screws “H” and “L” the air. gasoline mixture ratio is regulated, when unscrewing the screws the RPM increases, because the mixture is enriched, and when tightening the screws the RPM decreases.

However, quite common are cases where the adjustment of the carburetor can not fix the problems in the operation of the equipment. This is due to final component failure, which is the result of natural wear and tear, or due to improper operation.

Pros and cons of using the Husqvarna 236

Every chainsaw has advantages and disadvantages for use, service and repair. The Husqvarna 236 is no exception. According to real users of this saw, it sprays very well, but doesn’t start very well.

Specialists of the service center claim that the Husqvarna 236 is very capricious in maintenance and repair. Especially the carburetor, which is slightly different in design from previous Husqvarna models.

The Zama has a Zama carburetor with a booster pump, which fails quickly if not properly stored.

The problem can be solved by replacing the o-ring on the pump piston. Repair kits including a rubber booster pump are rare, and for that reason you have to replace the entire carburetor, which greatly increases the cost of repair.

Advantages.

If you have decided to buy Husqvarna chainsaw, then you have arrived at the right place. And if you want to buy a chainsaw from another manufacturer, you’re still in the right place. here you can see that you don’t need another manufacturer. Why? And that’s why.

Husqvarna chainsaws are about quality. They are made in Sweden, and this country has long been known for the quality of its products, and. any. No, no, you’re not paying for a brand name. You are paying for what it stands for: convenience, reliability, simplicity. And we will start with these three components. Where to begin?

Let’s start with reliability. Husqvarna chain saws have a special system that automatically stops the chain from turning if it becomes jammed in the material being sawn, or if the saw bounces back when first touched. An essential safety feature that helps protect you from injury and protects the tool from damage.

And when it comes to simplicity, it’s easy to operate a Husqvarna chain saw. even for someone who has never handled a chainsaw before. No special knowledge or tools are needed for chain tensioning. the chain tensioning is adjusted on the side of the saw.

Comfortable, ergonomic saw handles that are attached at an angle make operating a Husqvarna chainsaw easy and comfortable. And it makes sawing a pleasure. The air filter can be changed and cleaned in seconds because it is fastened with special quick-release fasteners. To avoid constant cleaning Husqvarna chain saws have a specially developed and integrated air cleaning system. cleaning the air filter is much less demanding. Yes, the X-Torq system not only cuts emissions by a factor of three, but also allows you to consume up to 20% less gasoline. And what you save is what you earn.

To avoid revealing all the secrets at once, we suggest you see for yourself that a Husqvarna chain saw is a win-win option. But we will easily relieve you of doubts, if any. No? That’s great! Then we are waiting for your purchases!

Ignition system. Almost all types of engine problems listed above can be caused by ignition system failures. Therefore, when they occur, it makes sense to begin troubleshooting with the spark plug. It is all the more justified, as the condition of the latter can give useful information about the operation of the fuel system as well. So, if you have a problem, you need to unscrew the spark plug and inspect it.

Chainsaw ignition system: 1. flywheel with integrated magnets, 2. ignition module, 3. spark plug, 4. high voltage wire.

The wire is disconnected, and the spark plug is unscrewed with a special wrench.

Unscrewing the spark plug

adjusting, carburetor, husqvarna, chainsaw

If the spark plug is dry, it means that the problem is most likely not the ignition system, but the fuel mixture not flowing into the cylinder. You can screw the spark plug back in and take care of the fuel system. If the spark plug is heavily spattered with fuel mixture, it means that there is a fuel surplus. It may be the result of a carburetor malfunction or an irregular start. Wipe and dry the spark plug, dry the cylinder, cut off the fuel supply and work with the starter. Check the oil level in the fuel system to air out the combustion chamber and remove any excessive fuel. After that put the spark plug back and restart.

The presence of a large amount of black sludge also indicates a malfunction in the fuel system.

Plug with black sludge

The oil to gasoline ratio in the mixture may be faulty, the carburetor is out of adjustment or low-quality oil is used. The spark plug should be washed in petrol, cleaned from sludge with a needle or awl, the electrodes should be cleaned with a fine emery cloth and refitted.

In all these cases it is worth checking the gap between the electrodes. Depending on its brand, it should be in the range of 0.5-0.65 mm. The spark plug gasket should also be checked. If it is worn or damaged, the combustion chamber integrity can be compromised, which leads to decreased compression in the cylinder and engine performance problems.

Even if you have good reason to believe that the problem is in the fuel system, you need to check the spark plug. if only to be sure that everything is all right. To do this:

  • Put the spark plug cable on the spark plug;
  • Using pliers with insulated handles, apply the thread or nut of the spark plug to the cylinder;
  • pull the starter handle and look at. if the spark is there or not.

If there is no spark, simply replace the spark plug. If even a new spark plug has no spark, check the high-voltage wire for breaks and contact with the spark plug.

The lack of spark can also be caused by a defective ignition module or a gap between the module and the flywheel coil. It must be equal to 0.2 mm thick. Gap loss is especially likely if the saw has been disassembled and the handwheel and the ignition module have been removed. Use a shim of 0.2mm placed between the flywheel boss and the ignition module. Faulty ignition module must be replaced.

Having checked the ignition system in this way and found no malfunction, you can move on to the fuel mixture system.

The chainsaw has 8 major components, namely the carburettor engine, chain brake, chain, air filter, starter motor, guide bar, clutch and the systems whose action is designed to reduce vibration. The design of the chainsaw carburetor involves adding oil directly into the gasoline in order for the fuel to flush the fixed part of the chainsaw, the so-called crankcase. The carburetor needs to be tuned periodically to keep the chain saw running flawlessly and for a long time.

A standard carburetor includes two or three screws that regulate the fuel mixture. The carburetor includes an idle speed adjustment screw, and several screws for high and low speed jets. The design of a chainsaw carburetor is designed to form a combustible mixture to burn fuel. When using a new chain saw it is recommended to leave the factory carburetor settings for more economical fuel combustion. Т.е. The carburetor must properly mix gasoline and air to keep the engine running smoothly.

Algorithm and description of Husqvarna carburetor adjustment

Husqvarna carburetors are adjusted like carburetors on other makes of chain saw.

Just before adjustment you need to make a full diagnosis of your chainsaw and make sure there is no fuel blockage or air intake in the crankcase. Also make sure that the air filter is clean and if necessary replace it with a new one.

  • When the saw is stopped the Husqvarna carburetor is reset to factory settings.
  • Start the engine and warm up the saw for a few minutes.
  • Turn the spindle (L) clockwise to the position when the engine reaches maximum rpm and turn it back to 1⁄4 stop. If at the same time the chainsaw chain rotates, it is necessary to reduce the idle speed, by adjusting the position of the screw (T).
  • The next step is to adjust the power of the Husqvarna at maximum rpm and correct the amount of. To do this, the tachometer is connected to a running chainsaw, the throttle knob is squeezed to the full, and then the tachometer readings are checked. If the maximum rpm differs from the maximum recommended by the manufacturer, change the position of the screw (H) to bring the tachometer reading back to normal.

adjusting the chainsaw carburetor

Most chainsaws have three adjustment screws on the carburetor. First things first:

  • T.Idle speed screw. The idle speed control knob is responsible for the throttle position when the throttle grip is fully released. If the throttle is not open enough, the engine will stall when the knob is released because the throttle will cut off the fuel mixture. In case the choke is opened more than it should be, the chain will rotate, which is strictly forbidden by the chainsaw safety rules.
  • L-Inch for low rpm setting. This screw controls the amount of fuel in the fuel mixture when the chain saw is idle. If the quantity of fuel will be great, the engine will choke under load, if the fuel is not enough the result will be overheating of the engine, scuffing and so on.
  • H-High RPM adjustment screw. Controls the amount of fuel in the mixture when the chain saw works. If it is set for a larger amount of fuel, the engine runs “uncontrollably” and smokes, and if it is set for less, you get too high RPM and overheating.

Adjusting the carburetor, step by step

  • Check the condition of the air filter. Take it off and either clean or replace it. If the air filter is clogged with dirt and sawdust the chain saw will not work properly.
  • Check the condition of the muffler. It should be clean and unclogged. info about silencer cleaning TEXT.
  • Before we start the adjustment of the carburetor it is recommended to fill the fuel tank at least up to the half.
  • If the chainsaw is able to start, let it run for a few minutes to warm up. If adjusting is done “cold,” the mixture will be over-enriched after warming up.
  • It is necessary to begin adjustment with adjustment of idle speed. screw L. It is highly desirable to have a tachometer, then we orient to 2700 rpm. If not, we need to find the highest rpm at idle. The chain should not rotate. if it is still turning (the chain of course, not the ground), then make it stop by turning the T screw. The chainsaw should sound like the one on the file below.https://benzopilatut.wav/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/ chainsaw-at-no-load.wav
  • Adjust the high RPM. H screw. If we turn it clockwise, the RPM will go up, and if we turn it counterclockwise, the RPM will go down. Tighten it until there is no lag in the ignition. After that, turn it out about one-fifth of a turn. The chainsaw should sound at maximum rpm like the one in the file below.https://benzopilatut.ru/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/ chainsaw-maximum-rpm.wav
  • Check how the chainsaw recovers revolutions. It should go up quickly and smoothly. If it is slow, turn the L a little.

Remember that the optimal carburetor adjustment is:

Factory settings

The standard Husqvarna carburetor factory settings are the screw positions (H) and (L) at which a serviceable chainsaw should be guaranteed to start. For Husqvarna tools, it is a turn and a half from the screws (H) and (L) fully turned in. In the adjustment process, you must first set the screws to the standard position, then start the chainsaw and make fine adjustments to power, the number of maximum revolutions and idle speed.

If during a complete diagnosis of your Husqvarna chain saw you discover carburetor issues, some of them can be corrected without calling a Husqvarna AB service center. For example, you can do it yourself:

  • change the gaskets under the covers of the main chamber and fuel pump;
  • clean or replace the strainer;
  • replace the diaphragm or needle valve of the main chamber;
  • troubleshooting the fuel pump diaphragm.

Gaskets, diaphragms and needle valve and rocker arm can be found in the repair kit available for each model of Husqvarna chainsaw carburetors.

Also, with some experience, you can try to repair the faulty valve injector, but it is impossible to guarantee a positive result when trying to repair the injector, if it is faulty, the manufacturers recommend changing the carburetor completely.

The first thing to do before removing the carburetor from a Husqvarna is to clean the saw with a compressor, t. к. Dirt can interfere with the quality of the repair. Next, you need to open the top cover of the chainsaw, remove the air filter, disconnect the rods from the control levers of the air and throttle valves. After that unscrew the screws that fix the carburettor.

To disassemble the carburetor body for repair is simple enough. The cover of the main chamber is held by four screws, which can be removed with an ordinary screwdriver, the fuel pump cover is fixed with one wide screw.

Below there is a video, after watching it it will be clear how exactly you can repair the carburetor without going to the service center of Husqvarna.

Tuning or repairing the carburetor on Husqvarna chain saws can be done with little to no experience. In order to do everything correctly, you need to follow the algorithm and have a minimum set of tools. It is also worth evaluating your abilities beforehand, and not taking any chances if you don’t understand anything about this technology. Believe me, sometimes it is better to pay a small sum to a master than to spoil the tool by adjusting it yourself.

Adjusting the Husqvarna 372 XP, 365 carburetor

Adjusting the carburetor on a Husqvarna 372 XP chainsaw means adapting the engine to local conditions, such as climate, altitude, gasoline quality, and oil type for two-stroke engines.

The carburetor has three control options:

L = low-speed jet. H = high velocity jet. T = Screw for idle speed adjustment.

Likers L and H adjust the amount of fuel that corresponds to the flow of air delivered by the throttle.

If the nozzles are screwed clockwise, the mixture will be poor (less fuel in relation to the amount of air), and if the nozzles are unscrewed counterclockwise, the mixture will be richer.

Poor mixture gives higher rpm, but richer mixture. lower turns. The T screw adjusts the throttle position at idle speed.

If you turn the T screw clockwise, the idle RPM will increase, and if you turn the screw counterclockwise, the RPM will decrease.

Husqvarna 365 XP chain saw pre-setting and starting

The carburetor has been pre-adjusted at the factory performance check. Pre-adjustment: H = 1 revolution, respectively L = 1 revolution.

To make sure the parts of the Husqvarna saw engine are sufficiently lubricated (cranked), set the carburetor at a slightly higher fuel mixture enrichment for the first 3 to 4 hours of operation.

For this setting the maximum rpm is set at 6-700 rpm below the recommended speed.

If it is not possible to check the maximum number of revolutions with a tachometer, the fuel mixture below the preset should not be jet H.

Do not exceed maximum speed. If the chainsaw chain rotates at idle speed, turn the screw T counterclockwise to stop it completely.
