How much oil to pour into the tiller

What kind of oil is poured

Many people are interested in what kind of oil to fill in the tiller gearbox? To answer this question, you need to take into account several factors, the main of which is the manufacturer’s recommendation regarding the type of oil.

It is also necessary to be guided by the price, without buying very cheap liquids, because they are unlikely to be of proper quality.

In general, oils can be of various types:

  • SAE. These types of oils cope very well with sudden changes in temperature, so they can be used all year round.
  • The selection process is as follows: you need to look at the number that is in front of the letter W. a smaller value will indicate that the oil is very well adapted to low temperatures (the smallest is 0W). If the letter W is not on the label, then this oil is suitable for the summer period.
  • API. In this case, the letters in the marking will indicate the type of engine. gasoline or diesel. Accordingly, a certain letter will say that the oil is suitable for gasoline units, and the other for diesel.
  • The numbers will talk about the type of engine, i.e. number 4 means oil should be used for a 4-stroke engine, etc. The EC value is the degree to which energy is saved, i.e. the higher the value, the better the oil.
  • ASEA. The largest number in the labeling will indicate that the oil can function in very difficult conditions.
  • GOST 17479, 1-85. These indicators characterize the degree of viscosity of the oil. As a rule, after this parameter, alphabetic and numeric values are written, and their absence indicates that the oil is universal.

Device

The reducer is a special device included in the design of any tiller. It is this part that is responsible for converting and transmitting the torque that is generated from mechanical transmissions. In fact, the gearbox drives the tiller, making it work.

The service life of the entire tiller, as well as its normal functioning, will depend on its quality, as well as on the correct lubrication of its components.

For more information about the reducer, see

Depending on the model of the tiller, be it a Cayman, Patriot Ural, Patriot, Texas, Foreman or any other, the gearboxes may differ in some design features. Conventionally, gearboxes can be divided into several types:

  • Angle reducers. Such units are quite effective, they allow you to dock the engine and transmission.
  • Gear reducers. In this case, the gearbox transmission acts as a kind of intermediary between the engine and the wheelbase of the tiller.
  • Reducing gears. These units achieve an increase in power indicators, reducing the total number of revolutions. Such gearboxes are most preferable because they have an air cooling system in their design, which allows them to work at maximum loads.
  • Reverse gearboxes. The main advantage of such gearboxes is the ability to reverse the tiller. However, units equipped with this type of gearbox do not show high performance and speeds.

Regardless of which gearbox is used in the tiller design, they all consist of almost the same components:

  • shaft;
  • gearbox housing;
  • flange and its fastening;
  • pulley with V-belt transmission (or chain);
  • ball bearing;
  • asterisks;
  • drain plug;
  • steel washer and nut;
  • input shaft.

These components traditionally form the gear unit itself. How well they are lubricated will affect their performance and service life.

Otherwise, with insufficient lubrication, the parts will wear out a lot, because they come into contact with each other during operation, and the resulting friction negatively affects their surface.

How to fill oil in a tiller gearbox

Before pouring new oil into the gearbox, the old fluid must be drained. It is in this way that the oil in the Tiller Salyut gearbox is changed, the video of which can be found on the Internet, as well as for other tiller models.

The algorithm of actions, in this case, will be as follows:

  • the tiller must be installed on some height so that the oil can be easily drained from the gearbox.
  • There are two plugs on the gearbox. a drain plug, which is located at the bottom of the gearbox, and a plug that closes the oil filling hole. We first unscrew the filler plug, which is located on top of the tiller body (at the checkpoint).
  • We take a sufficiently capacious container (an old bottle of transmission oil is suitable), after which we substitute it under the drain plug of the gearbox.
  • Gently unscrew the drain plug, after which the oil will begin to flow into our container. After waiting for the oil to drain completely, we screw the drain plug back. Then we tighten with a spanner wrench of a suitable diameter until it stops.
  • We insert the funnel into the filling hole. Then we take a suitable gear oil in order to fill the gearbox.
  • After filling the gearbox to the optimal level, we screw the plug back. This plug is equipped with a special dipstick, and its length is about 10 cm. After we have filled in the oil, we need to check its level. To do this, we twist this plug-probe, after which we unscrew it again and check.
  • If the oil is at the tip of this dipstick, then there is no need to top up any more.

As a rule, the oil change procedure should be performed every 100 hours of operation of the tiller. In some cases, this procedure must be performed every 50 hours.

In other words, the frequency of oil change depends on the model of the tiller, therefore, all the necessary information is in the accompanying documentation for the tiller.

How much to fill?

Another important point is the amount of oil required. Before answering the question. how much oil needs to be poured into the tiller gearbox, for example, Crossser, Viking, Forza, Sadko, Don, Huter, Profi, Plowman, Champion, Carver, you must first check the oil level in the gearbox. To do this, you need to perform certain actions:

  • It is necessary to place the tiller on a flat surface so that its wings are strictly parallel to this surface.
  • We take a wire or rod about 70 cm long, which will act as an oil dipstick.
  • We bend the improvised probe into an arc.
  • We insert the resulting probe into the filler hole to the very end, i.e. all the way. After that we take it back out.

If the wire is 30 cm in oil, then this is the optimal indicator, i.e. no need to add oil. If a little less, then it is necessary to top up within the given values.

If the gearbox is dry at all, then at least two liters of transmission oil will be needed.

Transmission oils for filling in gasoline and diesel tillers

As for the gearbox, transmission oils must be used to fill it. For example, semi-synthetic oil ZIC 10W40, designed for gasoline and diesel tillers, would be a good choice. API indicator. SM / CF, ACEA. A3 / B3, A3 / B4, C3.

Sold, as a rule, in a 4-liter container.

Another worthy oil is Super T-3 85W-90 from Gazpromneft. Its technical data will be as follows:

  • API indicator. GL-5;
  • viscosity grade. 85W90;
  • temperature indicator of loss of fluidity –.280C;
  • flash point. 2170C;
  • package length. 270 mm;
  • packing width. 130 mm;
  • packing height. 240 mm.

This gear oil is also available in a 4 liter container.

This is not the whole list of oils that can be poured into the tiller gearbox. In principle, anyone who is familiar with the basic parameters of the oil can independently determine what is needed for his tiller.

Changing the oil in the tiller: what and how much to fill in the gearbox

The presence of a tiller in a personal household can hardly surprise anyone, because this technical device has been known since Soviet times. Thanks to him, it became possible to quickly and high-quality cultivation of the soil, which used to take quite a long time, and also took a lot of effort.

However, in order for your tiller, as they say, to serve you faithfully, regularly plowing the land and performing its other functions, you need to use it in the correct way.

In particular, you need to know how much oil to fill in the tiller’s gearbox so that it works in optimal mode, and its parts are not erased from the lack of the necessary lubrication.

In principle, all the necessary information, as a rule, is indicated in the operating instructions for a specific tiller model, where the brands and grades of the recommended oils are directly indicated.

However, there are times when a tiller is purchased by hand, or in some other way, but the point is that such tillers are supplied mostly without any instructions.

A person may be at a loss, not knowing what kind of oil is poured into the tiller‘s gearbox, so it will be useful for him to know about its main types, as well as the methods of pouring into the tiller.

Periodic oil change in the gearbox is extremely important not only because it is recommended by the manufacturer, but also for a number of other reasons. In particular, during the operation of the tiller, foreign metal particles are formed in the oil in the gearbox.

They arise from friction and contact between the components of the tiller, which gradually crumble, and all this metal crumb gets into the oil. Thus, the oil begins to thicken, which leads to unstable operation of the tiller, and in the future, to the failure of the gearbox.

That is why, timely oil change in the gearbox is a necessary preventive measure to avoid future repairs.

Indeed, it is much more logical to spend an amount within one thousand rubles on the purchase of transmission oil than to spend much more money for expensive repairs or a complete replacement of the gearbox.

Homemade tiller trailers, which you can make with your own hands, are very popular.

What kind of oil to pour into the tiller

In the maintenance of agricultural tools, it is important to choose the right accompanying and consumables. Particularly acute, in this sense, is the question: what kind of oil to pour into the tiller. The performance of the equipment, its service life and a number of other factors that relate to a specific brand of tiller depend on this choice. Some manufacturers clearly indicate in the technical documentation that comes with the device, the recommended brand and type of oil. However, such information is not always saved, and as a result, the user of the equipment is forced to follow the basic recommendations, ignoring the warnings of the manufacturer.

What oil is better to fill in a diesel tiller

In addition to the fact that oils are divided into synthetic and mineral oils, they are also divided according to the types of fuel that the engine burns. According to the API standard, there are three types of oils. for gasoline engines, for diesel engines, and universal, which are suitable for devices of both categories. The first category includes oils with two-letter markings. In this case, the first letter on the left must be S, the second can be any of the list (A, B, C, F, G, H, J). If the oil is intended for diesel engines, then the first letter on it will be different, namely C.

Universal oils suitable for all types of engines are usually marked with a double marking, in which 2 types of devices are indicated at once through the sign /. For example, it can be SF / CC, or SG / CD.

As for a more detailed decoding of markings, it is worth noting that the quality of all oils is determined precisely by the second symbol in the marking. The closer it is to the beginning of the Latin alphabet, the worse the quality of the oil. Thus, diesel oil with CC marking is slightly inferior in performance properties than engine oil with CD marking.

Comparative characteristics of oils

What kind of oil to fill in the tiller gearbox

Despite the fact that the gearbox, like the engine, is actively working, they require completely different types of oils for lubrication. The inside of the gearbox is not filled with engine oil, but gear oil, which provides an excellent degree of lubrication of the moving parts. The amount of oil to be poured is also determined by the manufacturer, but not the engine, but the device as a whole, in this case it is the tiller.

What oil is better for pouring into a tiller engine

There is a lot of controversy about which oil should be poured into the engine of a home tiller. Those who consider their point of view to be correct, others refute it, but only one thing can resolve these disputes. the instructions for the device, created by the manufacturer of the equipment. Each of the manufacturers in it indicates the exact amount of oil to be poured, how this amount is measured, and even the type of oil that is used.

What all their points of view agree on is that the oil should be designed specifically for the engine. There are two types of oils. oils for two-stroke engines and oils for four-stroke engines. Both of these options are used for chillers, depending on which engine is installed in the model. Most Tillers have 4-stroke engines, but to determine the type of engine it is worth looking at its factory markings.

Both types of oils are divided into 2 types according to their composition. This criterion allows you to distinguish between semi-synthetic and synthetic oils, or, as they are also called, mineral oils. There is an opinion that synthetic oils are more versatile and can be used constantly, but this is not the case.

The use of oils is divided according to the seasonality of the use of the tiller. So, some models can be operated in the winter season, and due to the thickening of natural components that are sensitive to temperature drop, semi-synthetic oils cannot be used like mineral oils in winter. But the same oils are successfully used in the summer and reliably protect equipment.

So, oil is used not only as a lubricating agent for engine components, but also as a medium that effectively retains soot generated during fuel combustion and metal fractions that appear during parts abrasion. This is why most oils have a thick, viscous texture.

What kind of oil to pour into Tiller Neva

The peculiarity of Neva tillers lies in a wide variety of modifications of the model range due to the use of various engines, respectively, from different manufacturers. Therefore, before choosing an oil for a tiller, it is worthwhile to once again revise the instructions for the engine and check which oil is recommended by its manufacturer. Read about the features of the tiller models and technical characteristics in the corresponding articles. tiller Neva MB-2S-7.0, Neva MB-23S-9.0 Pro, as well as technical characteristics and device of motor-cultivators. What kind of oil to fill in a Subaru tiller

One of the most popular models of Subaru engines installed in Tilleri is the Robin Subaru model. This engine is quite sensitive to the quality of the oil used, so the manufacturer recommends # 20, # 30, and 10W-30 SAE oil for it. Recommended oil grade is SE or higher. In this case, the quality of the oil should be no worse than SG. Therefore, once again, asking the question: what kind of oil to pour into the Subaru tiller, ideally you should give preference to oil marked SJ or SH if it is not available.

How to check the oil level in the gear case

To fill in the lubricant, place the tiller on a flat horizontal surface, clean the gearbox housing next to the filler plug, which is located under the steering mounting bracket, and next to the inspection hole bolt (located on the right side of the gearbox). Then. loosen the control hole bolt. If oil begins to flow from it, this indicates that its level is normal, if it does not flow, its level is insufficient. In this case, unscrew the control hole bolt, open the gearbox filler cap, and use a hose or an angle funnel to pour oil into the gearbox until it flows out of the control hole. After that, you need to tighten the control hole plug, close the filler cap.

Important: do not forget to wipe any leaked traces of oil from the gearbox housing.

How to pour oil into a tiller engine

Before you fill in the oil, you need to follow a number of steps:

  • place the tiller on a horizontal flat surface
  • Wipe with a damp cloth the area around the oil filler neck (in the picture below you can see its location) from dust and other contaminants.
  • Unscrew the oil filler plug. The required amount of oil is poured using a funnel-shaped watering can.

    How to fill oil in a tiller gearbox

    All actions for pouring oil into the tiller’s gearbox are performed in the same way as when pouring oil into the tiller’s engine.

    The whole process goes like this: the tiller is located on level ground, the surface around the neck of the gearbox housing is cleaned, the plug-dipstick of the neck for pouring oil is unscrewed, the required amount of lubricant is poured using a funnel.

    What kind of oil to pour into the BriggsStratton tiller

    BriggsStraton units are equipped with an air (convection) cooled gasoline engine. Because of this feature, experts recommend using ILSAC GF-2 “SJ / CF energy conversing” synthetic oil. If there is no such brand, but you need to work at negative temperatures, you need to use BriggsStratton 10W-30 branded oil. If 5W-30 is used in warm and sunny days, oil consumption will double. Because of this, manufacturers urge users to check the oil level more often to avoid technical problems.

    In all Subaru chillers, the base engine is Robin Subaru. Experts recommend using SAE 5W-30 in winter, use SAE 10W-30 at other times of the year.

    What kind of oil to pour into the tiller

    When servicing any agricultural machinery, you need to make the correct selection of related and consumables. Likewise with the tiller, he needs timely, proper and proper care. In this article, we will only talk about what kind of engine oil you need to fill in the tiller. This topic is one of the most important for the maintenance of equipment. Indeed, the durability and working capacity of the device depends on the choice of oil. All manufacturers, in addition to warranty cards, leave technical documentation in which they indicate the recommended type and brand of oil for the tiller. But, unfortunately, this kind of information cannot always be saved.

    Experts warn that the performance and service life of a tiller with a particular brand depends on the choice of oil. If you choose the wrong oil, there is a high risk of equipment damage.

    To avoid an unpleasant incident with the wrong choice of tiller oil, we have divided the article into points for ease of use.

    What kind of oil to fill in the tiller engine

    In order not to be mistaken with what kind of oil needs to be poured into the engine, you need to adhere to the instructions for the unit, which was developed by the manufacturers of the tiller of a certain brand. The instructions indicate the type of oil and its exact amount to fill. For the engine, engine oil is used in all cases. Some manufacturers produce branded oil.

    There are two types of oils. for 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. To determine the type of engine, you need to look at its marking. Also, these two types of oils are divided according to their composition: semi-synthetic and synthetic (mineral). In everyday life, it is believed that synthetic oils are universal and can be used wherever possible. But in reality, this is completely wrong.!

    Also, oils are divided according to the seasons of the year. For example, one type of oil (synthetic) can be used in winter, and another type (semi-synthetic) can be used in summer.

    Characteristics of product types

    There are such types:

    • SAE. Its main indicator is resistance to various temperature changes. It is used not only for the summer, but also for the winter period. How to determine? First of all, you need to look at the number in front of the letter W. The lower its value, the more it is adapted to cold temperatures. The smallest value is 0W. If there is no such letter, then the oil is intended for the summer season. The higher the value, the better its quality.
    • API. This value characterizes the operating conditions. There are two types of them: diesel and gasoline. The letter values indicate the quality of the oil, as well as where it should be poured: into a gasoline or diesel tiller. Also, its appearance depends on the number of measures. That is, the number 2 is an engine with two strokes, etc. Some brands can be used for both two strokes and four, which are called combined. Another indicator is the literal value of EU, which stands for energy conservation. The economy of the oil is indicated by Roman numerals, and the higher they are, the better it is.
    • ASEA. Indicates the original quality of the material. The oil can be used not only by cars, but also by trucks running on diesel fuel. It is usually followed by a number. If its value is high, then the vehicle can work in difficult conditions.
    • CCMC. This indicator is rarely used. He indicated for which types of cars the oil is suitable.
    • MIL-L. This indicator is used in military terminology and is divided into two parts. Code 2104. indicates that the tiller is diesel, and 46152 is gasoline.
    • GOST 17479.1-85. This is the last characteristic that indicates the viscosity of the oil. It is followed by various letters and numbers indicating the type of fuel. If they are absent, then the grease is universal.

    Changing the engine oil

    It so happens that a person has purchased a tiller without oil. In such a case, it is necessary to fill in a new clean agent before using the unit. At the same time, attention is paid to the viscosity. It must correspond to a certain indicator. For these purposes, brands such as SAE and API are suitable, the features and characteristics of which were presented above. But you should still look at the instructions. It is in it that a certain type of oil is indicated, which is most suitable for this type of engine.

    Replacing it in the engine occurs after three hours of continuous operation of the tiller. But it should be borne in mind that different manufacturers of this fuel indicate their specific time. After the first replacement, the procedure takes place according to the instructions, that is, every 25 hours.

    • open the lid of the container where the oil is located;
    • we unscrew the cover of the drain tank;
    • the oil that remains in the engine is drained into a special container (the procedure takes about 15 minutes);
    • close the cover of the drain tank;
    • we fill the gearbox with new oil to the required level;
    • close the hole with a plug through which clean fuel was poured.

    There is nothing complicated in this process. It can be done by following certain instructions.

    What kind of oil to pour into the tiller? Criterias of choice

    Over time, every person who uses the tiller is interested in the question of which oil to pour into the tiller, as well as how to do it. It is worth paying special attention to this issue, since the service life of the tiller depends on the correct choice.

    Changing the oil in the tiller

    As a rule, the funds are charged after 100 hours of operation. But it so happens that this procedure must be carried out every 50 hours. To make a replacement, you need:

    • unscrew the plug from the drain tank;
    • pour the oil into a special dish (this operation takes about 15 minutes);
    • we twist the plug from the drain tank;
    • we fill the gearbox with new oil to the required level;
    • close the hole with a plug through which clean fuel was poured.

    Features of tools for the gearbox

    The oil in the tiller gearbox must be changed regularly. Why do this? After a while, the additives begin to lose their characteristics. In order for them to serve for a long time, they must be protected with oil. If you do not replace it, this will lead to foaming of the product, and the gearbox begins to jam. But there are such vehicles in which it is not necessary to replace this fluid.

    To replace it, use transmission types of products.

    Tiller grease

    The most common is 10w30 tiller oil.

    The price of lubricants for tillers depends on the brand of the manufacturer, as well as on their technical characteristics.

    How to choose?

    During operation, the tiller motor is constantly exposed to serious stress.

    There are a large number of technical indicators of oils. What kind of oil to pour into the tiller? When choosing, you should pay attention to viscosity and quality. These two indicators are key. First of all, they choose which tiller is better to use for this type of product, as well as climatic conditions. The answers to these questions can be found on the labeling of the motor fluid.

    Oil in tiller

    Stable operation of the tiller’s moving mechanisms is ensured by introducing a lubricant produced in the form of oils with different densities, properties and additives. Oils are consumables that must be replaced at intervals clearly established by the manufacturer. The protection of tiller parts from heating, corrosion and increased wear directly depends on lubricants, therefore, the choice of technical fluids must be treated with special responsibility.

    How to choose a tiller oil?

    The tiller’s factory manual for regular use can provide accurate information on a suitable brand lubricant for the built-in motor of the tiller. As a rule, the manufacturer indicates the type of liquid, its base and manufacturer’s brand. The proprietary manual also contains instructions from the manufacturer of the equipment, suggesting how much lubricant should be poured into the factory engine and how to do it correctly.

    However, not everyone has a proprietary manual of the used tiller. In this case, the operator needs to remember that, depending on the original purpose, there are 2-stroke and 4-stroke factory oil on sale. Most often, household tillers are equipped with factory 4-stroke motors, however, immediately before purchasing lubricant, it is still better for the user to first study the markings embossed on the engine wall.

    Checking and adding oil to your vehicle for beginners

    Another important factor when choosing a technical fluid is its density. The oil must envelop the moving parts of the tiller’s internal combustion engine and for this it must be uniformly colored and sufficiently viscous. At the same time, you should not choose too thick liquid, otherwise it will not be able to seep into the smallest grooves of the factory engine.

    Do I need to add oil to gasoline for a tiller?

    The answer to this common question can be given based on the type of factory engine of the existing tiller. Agricultural units are equipped with 2- or 4-stroke power units. Gasoline for a tiller with a factory 2-stroke engine must be diluted with engine oil, making sure to adhere to the proportion indicated by the manufacturer.

    It is important to remember that 2- and 4-stroke internal combustion engines operate on different principles. The combustion of fuel in engines of the first type occurs continuously in 2 strokes. At the same time, the branded oil with which the fuel mixture is prepared. contains not only lubricating components, but also additives that improve the quality of fuel. In 4-stroke factory engines, oil and refueling fuel for the tiller are always poured separately, into tanks specially designed by the manufacturer for this.

    Is it possible to fill the tiller with automotive engine oil?

    The difference between the internal combustion engine for the tillers used in the household and modern cars is:

    • the specifics of the factory design;
    • forcing level;
    • the material from which the components of the motors are made.

    The use of automotive factory engine oil for continuous lubrication of parts of the tiller’s internal combustion engine gradually leads to accelerated daily wear of the standard chrome-plated cylinders of the latter, its piston group, as well as to mechanical damage to the carburetor, factory filter elements and rubber fuel pipes.

    How much oil is required for a tiller motor?

    Before pouring new oil into the tiller yourself. the owner of agricultural machinery must find out how much fluid is already in the internal combustion engine. It is quite possible that at the moment a complete replacement of the existing grease is not required, and instead of it you can simply top up the missing amount of technical fluid.

    To check the content level in the oil tank yourself, you need:

    • Unscrew the plug of the standard filler hole provided in the crankcase of the utility tiller;
    • Insert the oil dipstick into the factory engine crankcase through the hole provided by the manufacturer, pull it out and check the level of the oil contained;
    • There are special marks on the built-in probe, as a rule, they are represented by the markings “MIN” and “MAX”. After removing the dipstick, you need to look at which mark the oil stain is. It should be located in the middle between these marks. If the fluid level is below the “MIN” mark, then you will need to add grease;
    • If there are no factory markings on the stylus being used, then the operator will have to navigate the length of the fixture. After measuring the volume of the liquid, its volume should reach the middle of the probe;
    • In some cases, the operator may not have a stylus. In this case, the amount of grease can be checked visually. To do this, you need to look through the filler neck. if the liquid level reaches almost the neck, then the owner does not need to top up engine oil for the tiller.

    After self-checking the level of the existing lubricant, close the cover of the standard filler neck as tightly as possible and make sure that the liquid does not leak out.

    Tiller gear oil. self-change

    The standard gearbox of any tiller needs lubrication no less than its factory engine. The gearbox is initially a complex structure consisting of several gears responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the working bodies of agricultural machinery. During the operation of the gearbox, the gears are constantly in contact with each other, which leads to the gradual erasure of their teeth. To slow down this process, you need to use a good quality lubricant.

    You can check the level of lubricant contained in the gearbox at a certain point in time as follows:

    • Clean a 70 cm piece of wire that will act as a probe;
    • Bend the homemade probe into an arc;
    • Push the wire through the filler hole in the gearbox to the end and pull it out.

    If the oil stain is 30 cm from the bottom edge of the dipstick, no oil needs to be added. Otherwise, the operator must add the missing amount of liquid.

    It is necessary to change the lubricant in the cold tiller gearbox only if it was found that it turned dark, almost black. Another indicator of the need for urgent replacement is the lubrication of a large number of foreign inclusions and solid fractions.

    Diesel Tiller Oil

    Diesel engines. differ from gasoline power units. Accordingly, to maintain their smooth operation, you need to choose a completely different type of lubricant.

    The main factor when buying a lubricant for a factory diesel engine is its viscosity, marked with the SAE designation followed by a set of letters and numbers.

    The latter will tell the buyer exactly in what conditions it is best to use the selected lubricant:

    • SAE 0W, SAE 5W or SAE 20W. designed for operation in regions with severe prolonged winters;
    • SAE 20, as well as SAE 40, SAE 60. marking without letters means that it is a highly viscous fluid that has proven itself in hot summer weather;
    • SAE 5W-30, SAE 10W-40. multigrade oils that work effectively both in winter and hot summer.

    The classification presented by the American Petroleum Institute divides motor oils for domestic and professional hillers according to their operating groups. Accordingly, the following types of lubricants are found on the market:

    • API CJ-4. used in proprietary high-performance, very powerful motors, which are specially designed for operation under high loads. Experienced gardeners recommend using factory oils of this type for the daily lubrication of engines manufactured by the BriggsStratton and Honda brands;
    • API CC. used for power units without built-in superchargers and with turbocharging. These oils provide continuous protection of inline engine parts against corrosion, gum formation and increased wear.

    When choosing oils of these types, special attention should be paid to their manufacturers. It is best for users to trust well-known companies, which include the brands Elf, Liqui Moly, Motul, Shell and others.

    Changing the oil in the tiller gearbox

    The gearbox in the tiller is a very busy part. it converts and transmits torque from the gears. Therefore, thorough and high-quality lubrication of the gearbox can significantly extend the life and quality of its service.

    Change the oil in the gearbox in the following sequence:

    the tiller is installed above the viewing pit or on some hill;

    first unscrew the plug from the bay hole, which is usually located on the gearbox. Then we substitute the prepared container for used oil under the drain hole, which is located at the bottom;

    when all the oil is completely drained, the lower drain hole is carefully closed;

    fill the gearbox with oil. Some gearboxes are equipped with a through-bolt level, others have a dipstick on the plug. Focusing on the oil level indicators, pour the required amount, twist the plug in the filler hole.

    The first replacement is carried out at the end of the running-in. The second oil change in the gearbox is carried out approximately every 75-200 hours of operation. But it all depends on the model, so the exact timing should always be specified in the manufacturer’s instructions.

    Changing the oil in the tiller engine

    The first time to change the oil in the tiller engine should be at the end of the break-in process, which usually lasts about 25-30 hours of operation (depending on the model). Subsequent replacements should be made no earlier than 2 times a year. in summer and winter. Even if the tiller has been idle, the oil should still be checked and, if necessary, replaced, as it may become waterlogged. It is also recommended to take into account the loads to which the tiller was subjected. If, upon visual assessment of the condition of the oil, you see that it has a very dark color, change should be carried out immediately.

    The replacement process itself is simple and does not take much time. To do this, you need a container for draining and a funnel with a wide neck. It is necessary to drain the oil while the engine is still warm after operation. The drain hole is usually located either on the left or on the bottom of the engine. Prepare a container for drainage, slightly tilt the tiller with the drain hole towards the container, unscrew the drain plug and oil filling holes. Wait for the liquid to drain completely. If the manufacturer has not provided a drain hole for used oil, the drain is carried out through the same hole as the bay. To do this, you will have to strongly tilt the tiller to one side. This procedure is best done together in order to avoid falling of the unit or oil spill.

    Pour oil into the tiller in the same amount as it was drained. After that, be sure to measure its level with a dipstick. If there is no dipstick, just pour a full crankcase, right up to the plug. After changing the oil, it is also recommended to replace the spark plugs.

    Some engines are especially sensitive to the type of oil. For example, Tillers with Subaru, Honda, BriggsStratton engines require oil of SE class and higher, but not worse than SG class.

    Do I need to add oil to gasoline for a tiller?

    The fuel for the tiller may be clean, or it may be necessary to prepare the fuel mixture. It all depends on the type of engine. For two-stroke engines, the tiller gasoline must be diluted with oil. In this case, the proportions recommended by manufacturers should be strictly observed (often this proportion looks like 1 part of oil to 4 parts of gasoline). Four-stroke engines do not require such a mixture and are refueled with pure gasoline.

    It is also important to note that diesel-powered tillers do not need these mixtures in any way (all diesel engines are 4-stroke). Otherwise, everything may end in serious damage to the unit.

    Diesel Tiller Oil

    As with the choice of lubricants for other models of tillers, in this case, you should also follow the instructions for use and the manufacturer’s recommendations. In general, oils for diesel tillers are divided into the following categories:

    CA. for tillers subject to low to medium severity loads. Significantly reduces the formation of bearing corrosion and deposits on engine parts at high temperatures. Not suitable for high voltage applications;

    CB. just like the previous type, this oil is designed for low to medium loads. Compared to the CA category, it further reduces the degree of corrosion formation;

    CC. for use in medium to heavy duty chillers with air cooled engines. Reduces deposits on parts at high temperatures and reduces the risk of corrosion on bearings;

    CD. for air-cooled diesel engines that are designed to run at higher rpm.

    Is it possible to fill the tiller with automotive engine oil?

    The purchase of lubricants for a tiller is a responsible event, since the safety of the most important systems and components of the tiller, its serviceability, operability and service life in general depends on their quality. Usually, all information regarding the brand and type of oil for the tiller is prescribed in the operating instructions. But sometimes, due to loss of documents or after major repairs, you have to select it yourself.

    An important factor that affects the service life of your tiller is also the timely and correct oil change in different systems of the unit. We will tell you about how to choose the right oil for a tiller and about its correct replacement in this article.

    Types of oil for tiller

    There are 2 types of chiller motor oils. for 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines. Fill should be exactly the type that the manufacturer recommends (look at the engine manufacturer’s markings or read this information in the operating instructions). Both of these species also differ in 2 species in composition. The most common types of oil recommended by manufacturers for use in tillers are synthetic (mineral) and semi-synthetic with a viscosity of 10W40 or 15W40. As for the season of use, synthetic oils are more suitable for the winter time, in which the degree of thickening when temperatures drop is much lower. For the summer period, both types of lubricant are generally suitable.

    A more detailed classification of oils for the main parameters looks like this:

    SAE. A parameter indicating the degree of viscosity of the lubricant. It is designated by an alphanumeric code, where the letter W means the ability to use oil at different temperatures. The numbers to the left of this letter are the viscosity at minus temperatures, to the right after the dash. at plus temperatures. This criterion characterizes how well the lubricant will move through the system at different temperatures and will not allow friction of parts.

    API. Classifies oils into 2 types according to their service properties. Category C. for 4-stroke air-cooled diesel engines. Category S. for gasoline engines.

    ACEA. A criterion indicating the possibility of energy saving, that is, the degree of how well the oil will protect the parts of the mechanism from wear.

    Based on these parameters and taking into account the API category (gasoline or diesel tiller), the most popular oils are 5w30, 5w40 (from the all-weather class), 10w30, 10w40 (anti-corrosion), 15w40, 20w40 (for operation at elevated temperatures, namely more than 45 ° C), 0w30, 0w40 (for use in winter).

    Tiller transmission oil

    The gearbox is filled not with engine oil, but with a special gear oil. There are correspondingly different recommendations for different models of tillers. For example, such types of oils as TAD-17I, TAP-15V are suitable for Neva MB-1 tillers. For tiller Neva MB-2, GOSTs recommend oils TEP-15, TM-5, SAE90 API GI-2, etc. For tillers from Zubr and Centaur, TAP-15 oil is recommended.

    Is it possible to fill the tiller with automotive engine oil?

    It is not worth taking the risk and pouring automotive oils into the tiller, since the engines of cars and tillers have different principles of lubrication and temperature modes of operation. Also, tiller engines have other peculiar qualities (design, material from which they are made, degree of boost, etc.), which may be incompatible with the characteristics of automobile oils.
