How to cut glass with an oil glass cutter

How to Cut with the Glass Cutter: Secrets of Skill

There is such a wide range of this tool on the market that consumers are confused by their choice, wondering which option is better to buy. To make the right decision, first you should not only learn the basic rules of how to cut with a glass cutter, but also decide how often you will have to use it.

Glass is a fragile material and very problematic to work with. Cutting such a material requires a delicate attitude, and it can not be everyone. In order to cut glass into required shapes, today several types of glass cutters are used, but the classical version is most commonly preferred. It leaves a neat scratched line for the trimmer on the surface of the glass, and it only remains to break off the desired piece along the outline.

Varieties

Experienced masters recommend using three basic types of glass cutters, with the help of which you can easily cut the glass to the required size, even at home.

Roller

Quite a popular model, distinguished by its ease of use. Glass cutter roller is very often chosen by beginners, because it is characterized by convenience in the work. In addition, it is very inexpensive because it is not made of diamond-stones.

Structurally, the glass cutter consists of a roller part and a handle. Special solid alloys are used for roll production, and element diameter is 5 mm.

But the working life of such a tool is limited. it lasts for three and a half to four hundred meters of glass material. But as it costs very reasonably, you can buy a new tool at any moment. in addition, the set includes several removable roller elements, so you do not have to change the purchased tool for quite a long time.

Diamond

Another common, effective and popular glass cutter is the diamond. This option is great for both professionals and inexperienced glass cutters.

Let’s understand how to cut glass with a diamond glass cutter. Note at once that you will spoil more than a dozen glasses in the process of training, but all your expectations will be justified as soon as you master the technique of using diamond glass cutters.

How to cut with the glass cutter

The tool consists of a handle and a working head with a diamond element, which can be either pyramidal or beveled. All should be aware of this feature, because the shape differences of the heads influence the working principle. For example, it is much more difficult to cut glass with a pyramid head, as it requires an advanced, almost “musical” ear. Let’s see how to cut glass with a beveled head. During operation, the diamond moves across the glass surface and emits a sound of a certain frequency. When the sound is “wrong”, it means that the diamond movement is not correct, and the bevel is very likely to be defective. In order to cut the right shape, beginners use a glass cutter with a beveled head.

In such a tool, the stone is either artificial or real, and this distinction influences the cost. But there is one more peculiarity here. with a real diamond you can cut a centimeter-thick glass, while an artificial diamond is enough only for 5 mm. And the service life of such samples is also different. a real diamond will cut ten to fifteen kilometers of glass, whereas an artificial diamond will finish its operation after the fifth kilometer.

Oil

This variant of the glass cutter is a modification of the tool with a roller head. There is a small reservoir in the handle, in which lubricating liquid is poured. During cutting, it is constantly fed to the roller and the glass surface, significantly reducing friction and improving the quality of the scratched lines, ensuring a long service life of the tool. as a result, the service life of an oil glass cutter, as compared to a simple roller cutter, is fifteen times longer.

In addition to the models listed above, there are circular glass cutters that can be used to easily cut round holes in the glass. Such tool is a bit different by design, looking more like a compasses than a handle with a cutting element. In addition to circles, this glass cutter can cut ellipse-shaped holes.

General guidelines for selection

Today there is a huge variety of glass cutters, different shapes and colors. Some tools may have similar visual features, but differ dramatically in quality of execution. Original glass cutters from reputable manufacturers, are relatively expensive, but also last for a specified period of time. The Chinese models will cut, but they will fail much faster. In order not to overpay for an unnecessary 20 thousand meters of cutting, before choosing a glass cutter for the home, we recommend that you answer a few questions for yourself.

How often do you need to cut glass?? In private homes with households, such a task occasionally appears, so it is better to have a more reliable device in the arsenal. If you plan to use the glass in your designs or stained glass windows you will need a high quality instrument which is also capable of making a very straight cut. If you need to cut glass for the first time in your life and do not know when you expect it, you can get by with the least expensive variant. To get a better idea of which glass cutter to choose, you need to know what kind of glass you are going to work with? The average thickness of window glass is 3-4mm and even the cheapest glass cutter can cut through this kind of material. If you are dealing with a thicker blade, it is better to choose a tool based on its size. Oil glass cutters can cut glass up to 9 mm and diamond glass cutters up to 20 mm.

How to cut glass?

The principle of cutting ordinary window glass will be considered. It is used for glazing windows, doors and other spaces during construction or repairs.

Attention! This limitation is due to the fact that glassblowers use their own techniques and tools. There are several other industries which use glass and vitreous substances. They use a different technique to separate them.

Ordinary window glass used in construction:

Clarification! Plexiglas has an organic polymer in its composition. Therefore, the cutting process is done by sawing with circular cutters or planer cutters.

The cutting process is to apply a risk. Most often, a trimmer line is carried out on a ruler. In 99.9% of all cuts, the tool moves in a straight line. A force is needed to create a groove and crumble out some glass chips. It is directed at the glass surface. Then the introduction into the body takes place. If no normal pressure is created and only tangential forces are applied, no risk is created.

Creating a risk on the glass is the first step in the cutting process:

After causing damage in the form of a shallow groove creates a critical area inside the amon material. It also happens that the temperature difference between the ridge and the rest of the body is so high that no additional effort is needed to break the glass apart. A similar phenomenon occurs with some materials in the cutting edge. The second prerequisite is a high rate of grooving.

often than not, a bending force must be created. The place of the mark is placed on the edge of the table and then a vertical load is applied. That’s what produces the fracture along the line.

Glass breaking along the cutting line. You can see that the forces are applied on the sides of the line. They are the ones that contribute to the fracture:

The flat surface to be cut must be level and without tilts. In addition to the glass cutter it is necessary to prepare a marker and a thick ruler for marking the cut line.

No special forces are required when using a diamond glass cutter. The tool should be pressed with approximately the same force as a pencil. Setting the right direction to the cutter and the correct inclination angle can be difficult for beginners. To understand the principle of operation it is possible to practice beforehand on a sheet of rough material. After a thin line cut has been made, memorize the position in which the glass cutter was held, and do the same on a normal sheet of glass. In order to make the cut more easily it is necessary to move the tool evenly along the length of the ruler without changing the pressure and angle of the tool.

Glass cutters should be held perpendicular to the plane of the material. A small line marking is made along the sheet edge with the glass cutter so that the pressure in these fragile parts can be reduced. Failure to do so will result in chipping. Then the ruler should be set back from the markings by the width of the cutting element and the cut should be made. The work must be carried out from the far edges, the glass cutter should be led towards yourself, pressing it firmly by its side against the ruler.

The cut must be made quickly. So that it takes about 2 seconds for 1 meter. The force required to cut with the glass cutter is greater than with the diamond tools and the pressure must not be varied over the whole length, except for the edges.

You can tell by ear how well the tool is being used. If there is a regular hiss or crackle, you can say that the work is being done correctly, but if there is a squeak or creak, it means that something is being done incorrectly. This indicates a blunt instrument or too little pressure. The presence of small white splinters on the line may be an indication that the pressure is too much, so it should be a little looser.

Flawed lines or glass that is too thick should be pounded on the other side of the sheet. To do this, you must move the glass to the edge of the working surface so that the linear cut is 5 mm from its edge. Then you need to use the head of the tool to tap a line from the upper edge of the sheet to the bottom. This creates microcracks that can easily break off the material being cut. You can use the sidewall of a glass cutter or pliers to break off small strips of glass.

The subtleties of the work

Even considering the fact that it is quite easy to use the glass cutter, people who do not have experience in this matter should try their hand at an unnecessary piece of glass. Through these steps, it is possible to choose the correct angles of inclination, the pressing force, and to determine the possible mistakes to avoid them during the finishing work. Because at cutting there is a formation of glass dust and the smallest splinters, it is also necessary to take care about safety, firstly wearing glasses and gloves.

How to cut with a glass cutter?

This work has no details, so all steps require the utmost attention.

What will be needed for work?

Glass and glass cutter are not the only things you need to prepare. Therefore at first it is better to “announce the whole list”. It includes:

  • A work table with a perfectly flat surface;
  • A ruler (level rail), a tape measure, an angle;
  • sandpaper (file, stone);
  • Thread, cloth, solvent;
  • rubber mallet.

The metal ruler is ideal. It is better to look for a rather thick tool, suitable for the glass cutter’s stop: its minimum thickness is 8 mm. Experts use rulers with suction cups. Since there are usually no such tools in the household, a long time ago invented an alternative. This is a metal ruler with a glued strip of thin rubber.

Do not do without a marker, and a pencil will be able to perform the role of a stand, necessary for breaking a small glass sheet along the cutting line.

Prepare your work area

Because of the fragility of the material to the working surface have strict requirements.

  • It must be absolutely flat, because the glass during the cutting is a serious pressure. If the base is uneven, there is a high probability that the glass will crack in the wrong place. The consequence will be the inability to use the glass blank, and this promises additional costs and new work.
  • A completely clean glass surface is a must. So first wash it with a soapy solution (glass cleaner), then wipe it with newspaper or paper towels. The last step is degreasing with a solvent. It can be acetone, kerosene or white spirit.

The best surface is a piece of plywood or wood-fiber board. To prevent the formation of scratches, it is recommended to put under the glass some cloth, a large piece of rubber, oilcloth or thick film. Such a reliable “seal” will protect the surface and provide better adhesion.

Cutting Glass

Any debut requires unhurriedness, caution, and accuracy. This is absolutely true for hazardous glass as well.

  • First it is marked out. To draw the line use a long metal or wooden ruler, a tape measure or a completely straight line. The second tool you need is a glass marker (marker pen), which leaves the line as thin as possible for the trimmer.
  • Then small notches-marks are made at both ends of the drawn line. A ruler is attached to the glass, a glass cutter is taken and a trimmer line is drawn, applying a small amount of force. The pressure to the edge of the glass must be slightly relieved to prevent the material from chipping and damaging the tool.
  • Hold the diamond glass cutter like a pencil or pen, with a slight tilt. Roller and oil. perpendicular to the surface. In the first case, a barely noticeable trace should remain on the glass. colorless thin line for trimmer, in the second it should turn white, and the work must be accompanied by a characteristic crackling. The trimmer line is only used once. A second cut at the same place is forbidden.
  • A flat bar or a small bar is put under a piece of cut glass to break it along the cut line. Beforehand, it is tapped with the handle of the glass cutter from the back side to deepen the crack a little, thereby facilitating the upcoming operation. The prepared glass is gently broken. As a rule, this does not require excessive force.

When it is necessary to break off a thin strip, either use pliers or the glass cutter, which has special grooves designed for this purpose.

Features of breaking

We must stop at this point, because there is a different technology for each type of workpiece.

  • Figures made of thin glass. up to 5 mm. In this case, the material is broken by hand. Gloves are a must.
  • The blanks of a thicker product. more than 5 mm. To “extract” the part, it is recommended to use pliers or pliers with rubber or plastic tubes on their jaws.
  • Thick material and narrow strips. To simplify the work as much as possible, a thin and long non-metallic object (such as a pencil, matches) is placed under the cutting trimmer line, then the material is pressed on with the palms of the hands on opposite sides.

Large and thick pieces require a different method. The sheet is placed on the table so that the cutting line for the trimmer is located 30-50 mm from its edge. The half, lying on the furniture, is held by one hand, and the other sharply pressed on the one that “hangs in the air”. It is better to work with an assistant to prevent the piece from accidentally falling off.

Very thick material (over 10 mm) is a reason for a different approach. The operation is also performed on the table, but the risk is done on both sides of the glass. Before breaking, the cutting trimmer line (from the beginning to the end) is pounded with a rubber mallet (or the handle of a glass cutter) until a crack is formed.

The last stage of any operation is the careful processing of the cut line. For it is suitable sandpaper, file (nadfil) with a velvet notch or a sharpening stone.

How you can make a glass circle?

How to properly cut with a glass cutter, if such a workpiece is required? There are several ways to achieve the goal. However, the choice depends on several factors. the diameter of the product, the thickness of the glass.

The most logical of the options is to use a circular glass cutter. But such a tool is very rarely available in the household. Therefore, we often have to look for a replacement tool. An alternative exists: it is a circular tool, made of an ordinary glass cutter. The work consists of several stages.

  • First, the center of the future figure is marked on the glass. A suction cup is fixed on it.
  • A strong string (string for trimmer) is tied to it, and to its other end. a glass cutter, but so that the length of the string is equal to the radius of the future circle.

The thread is pulled taut, then the tool guides the trimmer line. Additionally make cuts-perpendiculars on the four sides of the glass, they will allow without much trouble “to get” a circle from the material. If the sheet is large, many rays are drawn. You take the glass in your hands, gently press its edges on all sides. After that, it is easy enough to break off “unnecessary” elements from the circle.

A little about glass

This widespread material is used for decorating windows, doorways, for decorating and making furniture, etc.д. This material is hard, but fragile, so it is often necessary to replace the broken pieces. Glass can be plain and tempered. it is stronger, but with any damage it crumbles into small pieces. That is why only simple M1-M6 grade glass is cut. The lower the number, the higher the quality of the glass: fewer foreign inclusions, air bubbles and other inhomogeneities. So it is easier to cut it.

What to do if you do not have a glass cutter handy? There are ways in which glass is cut with a non-standard tool. This operation can be performed with a soldering iron, angle grinder, nichrome thread, and even with ordinary scissors! Let us find out how to cut glass with our own hands using each of these methods.

  • Using a soldering iron. First make notches at the beginning and at the end of the cutting line with a file. Then along the whole line it is necessary to draw carefully the well warmed up soldering iron. Because of the difference in temperature on the sides of the surface of the glass crack, after which the only thing left is to break it off gently.
  • with an angle grinder. This tool is available in almost every home, so it is not surprising that it was adapted for work with glass. In order to cut the glass with an angle grinder, you need a thin diamond disc. It is used to make a fine groove along the cutting line, along which the beveling will take place. But when cutting with an angle grinder you must make sure that the glass does not overheat, and make sure to use coolant. A good tool is required, otherwise its vibration will simply break the glass. Be sure to protect your respiratory system and eyes while working with the angle grinder on glass. Getting into them the tiniest glass dust will not lead to anything good. Therefore, if you cut a sheet of glass with an angle grinder, you must be equipped with goggles and a respirator.
  • Using heating and cooling. A thread impregnated with a flammable substance is placed along the cutting line and set on fire. Immediately after it goes out, the cutting trimmer line is cooled with water. The sudden change in temperature will crack the glass. Another option is to heat the glass with a nichrome thread, through which an electric current is passed. In this case, no water is required, the temperature difference between the two surfaces of the sheet is enough.
  • Use scissors. Thin glass up to 3 mm can be cut with ordinary tailor scissors if you immerse both the scissors and the glass in a container of hot water. The process feels similar to cutting through thick cardboard.

How to break the glass properly

Normally, thin glass is broken by hand. Place the cut glass on the edge of the table, so that the cutting trimmer line is on top and slightly over the edge of the tabletop, and most of the glass lies on the tabletop. One hand press the glass to the table, and the other grasp the glass by the half protruding from the table. Then with your other hand gently press the glass down.

If the breaking edge is too small and you can’t reach it with your hand, use pliers to break the glass. Take the pliers so that the edge of their lips is on the line of the cut, gently squeeze the glass and gently press down on the handles. Usually you can’t break off the cut off strip completely with the pliers, so you’ll need a few of these approaches.

Theoretically knowing how to cut glass, take some unnecessary glass and practice on it to feel the tool and fill a little hand. And then, if you have to cut glass, your hand will remember both the right position of the cutter and the right pressure.

Cutting with a “professional” glass cutter

For such “surgical” operation requires another tool. a ruler, it is better to find a thick plate, with which the glass cutter will be more difficult to nip. The material is marked out with a felt-tip pen or a special pencil. the glassblower, which is used for painting glass surfaces.

Having made the marks, connect the points with a line of the future cut, leave the ruler on it. The incision is made only once, repeated manipulation is prohibited, otherwise the glass may crack. First at the top from the edge with the glass cutter a short fishing line for the trimmer, its length is up to 5 mm. Then it is continued to the end of the product.

Equal force applied along the entire length is a must. Correctly drawn trimmer line should be translucent, uniform. The sheet is broken. If the operation is not successful on the first try, the trimmer line is tapped out with the handle of the glass cutter, and then the process of breaking is repeated.

After the most responsible stage has been completed successfully, the edges of the chip are cleaned up with fine-grained sandpaper, the replacement for it. a bar.

Diamond tool

It is more convenient to work with because of the familiar shape: the handle of a diamond glass cutter is very similar to a pencil, so it is held in the same way. However, there are some peculiarities even in working with such a comfortable tool:

  • it is placed at an angle to the surface to be processed: the position of the glass cutter is similar to the “pose” of a pencil when writing or drawing;
  • Excessive force in this case is contraindicated, it will lead to irregularities or chips in the cutting line;
  • re-running on the “drawn” areas. taboo, an indentation of at least a few millimeters is necessary;
  • the work requires accuracy and speed: the operation of scratching a line on a meter-long sheet of glass takes about 2 seconds.

the cut trimmer line is aligned with the edge of the work surface so that the unnecessary part of it is in the weight. The cut is tapped from the underside until a small crack is formed. During this operation, “superfluous” glass fragments are usually separated from the sheet on their own, without requiring the efforts of the master. Sometimes a hanging piece of glass is gently broken off.

Roller, oil glass cutter

In this case, strictly vertical positioning of the tool is mandatory, pressing efforts when cutting are also necessary. Always begin by slightly knocking on the back side. the most delicate method of breaking glass. If it does not come off, you can go on to more serious work.

Place matches and/or toothpicks under the sheet along the cut line (either at gaps or at one edge only). Then the sheet is gently pressed on both sides. If these manipulations do not help, then, again aligning the line for the trimmer with the edge of the working surface, try to put pressure on the glass by hand, but without fanaticism. Unsuitable material is a good reason to try to make a different cutting trimmer line.

Actions with an oil tool do not differ one bit from the work with an ordinary roller, the only difference is that the process is easier because of the lubrication of the surface.

If you need a round hole

For beginners in this case, it is better to get somewhere glass-circular cutter, as an independent assembly of the tool, which may no longer be needed, to no avail. In this case, the suction cup end is fastened in the center of the future circle, then the desired radius is set. The circle is outlined accurately, smoothly, but quickly. Further work on its extraction is similar to the previous work.

Unconventional shape cutting

The process of this cutting is somewhat more complicated, but also not very demanding, even for novice glass craftsmen. To guarantee accuracy, first make a workpiece-template. Cut out the template from the chipboard, the recommended thickness is 5 mm. The roller will not be able to adjoin it tightly, therefore, an indentation of 2-3 mm is necessary. Strips of tape are glued to the bottom of the cut out template, they will not let it “wiggle” on the glass. The prepared mold is placed on the cloth, drawing a continuous line for the trimmer. Then the glass is tapped from the underside.

Folk alternatives to glass cutters

Folk experience. the only option, when there is an urgent need, and the tool is not available. Several methods are used to cut glass, but not all of them are relatively safe.

  • Scissors and warm water. This method is applicable if you want to cut a sheet that is not more than 3 mm thick. This is the way to operate when small pieces of glass of a certain shape are required. Take strong scissors, because the work is similar to cutting very dense cardboard. The deeper the glass in the water, the easier the process is. In this case, it is better to wear thick gloves and goggles, as it is assumed that the glass elements are capable of jumping out of the water.
  • Burner, soldering iron, hot nail. The latter option can kill a lot of time, as you will have to heat the metiz constantly, and the action will not be too convenient. The first thing to draw on the glass is a line for the trimmer. At its beginning, which coincides with the rib, make a small hole on it (with a file, file, hacksaw). A soldering iron is placed on this place, moving it without pressure. The glass is broken by hand, wearing gloves.
  • Natural fine twine and gasoline. Such “jokes with fire” require caution from the master. the use of a non-combustible work surface. Cord, cut exactly to the length of the product and soaked in gasoline (kerosene, White spirit), put on a fishing line to trim the future split, then ignite. After waiting for the burning to be almost complete, the place is poured with water. If some areas are left untreated, a string of the same length is cut and then the operation is repeated. Tap the cutting point until a crack appears.

The answer to the question of how to cut glass correctly is obvious: the only option that works best for this purpose is the glass cutter. If the home craftsman has a strong passion for experimentation, he can also try folk methods. How the traditional “glass-cutting” works, this video will show you:

How to use oil when cutting glass with a glass cutter

On how much oil to fill the handle of the glass cutter we have already written about. It is important that the oil flows evenly onto the cutting part without unnecessary drips, but still comes out of the container. Make adjustments by turning the refill cap, turn it to a certain degree and spend the glass cutter on the glass. You should get an evenly cut and damp from the oil with a trimmer line. If necessary, adjust by screwing or unscrewing the lid. When you are not using the cutter tighten the cap so the oil does not leak.

If this is your first time cutting glass, try it on a regular window pane for practice. This can save you a lot of money if you need to work with expensive glass in the end. Different colors, or artistic designs can be used to decorate the glass.

Put the glass on the table. Cover the table with several layers of newspaper (5-7 sheets of newspaper) beforehand. The newspaper will first collect all the crumbs of glass on itself, later the top sheet can just throw away and your workplace will be kept clean. Secondly, when the glass is loaded, the newspaper will transfer the force evenly from the glass to the table, preventing cracking. The glass should be at a distance of 5. 7 cm from the edge of the table. Stand up straight in front of the cutting area with your feet slightly apart. Good balance and the ability to move your body over the cutting point, give you a better chance of proper operations.

If you have a pencil-type glass cutter, guide the trimmer line in the same way as with a pencil. The wheel must follow a line and must also be strictly perpendicular to the glass surface. It is allowed to rest your hand on the glass when cutting. Guide the glass cutter from one edge to the other.

When using a pistol-type glass cutter the procedure is the same except that the handle of the glass cutter and your hand are in a suspended position. This type of glass cutter is more suitable for curved cuts. For stained glass, for example.

If you use not regular but embossed glass, then determine where its smooth side is and make the cut according to it. (The glass is embossed in the photo above)

Use even force along the entire length. The most important thing here is the evenness of force, the speed of movement is not important. So for thin glass about 2mm the effort is about 1-1,5 kg, for glass 4-5mm about 5 kg.

You can cut with a ruler, but if you are experienced enough you can also cut with a marking

Cut through glass only once. Do not re-cut it. First, if you cut through the same area a second time, you increase the chance of cracking, and second, you can damage the cutting part of your cutter.

If you notice when you cut the glass that it pricks, and small flakes, chips, or glass sand fly off, then your tension is too great. Reduce the pressure on the glass as you cut it.

How to break glass after you cut it

There are several ways to break glass.

One of these we have already discussed in the section above. When we talked about specialized pliers (see paragraph on Tools and Materials). These pliers can be used for straight cuts and shaped lines. If you press on the glass and hear a crack or crack, but not all the way through, repeat the operation using the pliers on the other side.

You can break the glass with your hands. Typically thin glass and small areas. To do this, hold it in your hands so that the cut is on top. Lean the bottom of the glass against the table so it will not hang over the edge. Pick it up as shown in the photo.

In doing so, try to turn the glass as two different pieces already separated along the cutting line. Do this gently, as if you were breaking a loaf.

Place the glass along the cutting line on the edge of the table. So that most of it rests on the table. Press it with the palm of your hand along the cut line. With your other hand hold the other half of the glass and break it in the opposite direction from the surface where you cut it.

If the edge of the glass is too narrow to grasp with your hands, use pliers. Break an edge with the jaws of the pliers set in the cutting line (as in the photo below) If you can’t break an entire piece at once, break the glass in several similar increments.

Before breaking glass using methods 2, 3 and 4, knock the glass along the cutting line from the back. As a result, invisible micro-cracks will appear in the glass that will promote smooth breaking of the glass.

Oiled glass cutters

Such a device is suitable for both beginners and experienced craftsmen, who have already cut more than one kilometer of glass. The device can cut both thick glass and handle the thinnest glass sheets. The maximum thickness of the blade that the oil glass cutter can handle is 8 mm. Considering the more complex construction of the device, the price is significantly higher compared to their roller counterparts.

Oil glass cutter consists of a tube filled with grease which flows through a special channel to the cutting element through wicks. A continuous flow of oil to the wheel ensures that the sharpening process lasts for several months. Lubricant can be refilled over time.

Glass cutters with diamond cutting element

Because cutting glass with a diamond glass cutter is a rather specific task that requires certain skills, this device is not suitable for beginners. High-quality device can easily cut a sheet up to 2 cm thick. Diamond cutting element can be either real or synthetic, which directly affects the price of the device.

The diamond glass cutter is made up of a heavy handle, an iron head with a groove for breaking glass, and a cutting tip. Sharpening sharpness. nearly indefinitely. One unit is definitely enough for several thousand meters of glass.

Glass cutters for cutting round holes

Not everyone knows how to properly use a glass cutter in the form of a compass. The special shape of the cutting element lets you make straight, round holes in the glass. The price for such devices depends on the producer. The highest quality appliances can cost as much as proven diamond glass cutters.

The device consists of a suction cup, a guide ruler and a cutting element. Some models may have a lubricating element on the roller. Such a device can be easily assembled with a suction cup, a metal rail and an ordinary household appliance.

Glass cutting technique with a glass cutter

Degreased clean glass cloth is placed on the workbench, covered with an antiskid cloth. A marker or a professional glass engraver is used for marking. As it is necessary to cut glass with a glass cutter in one movement along a marked line, it is better to spend money on a more expensive marking tool. Marking is made with a reserve, based on the thickness of the cutting element.

The next and most important step is to run the glass cutter over the glass sheet. To begin with, a short trimmer line to 0.5 cm. To the resulting notch, apply an iron ruler to the marked line. Then with one sure movement the glass cutter is used on the glass. The correct cut is guaranteed by the audible crackling sound that forms along the entire length of the cut.

Important! In any case it is not necessary to make repeated cuts. If unsuccessful, it is recommended to step back a few mm and try again.

The final step is to separate the cut part of the glass. To do this, place the cloth on the table so that the cut is parallel to the edge of the table top and hangs slightly over it. Use the glass cutter to tap another part of the glass so that the piece breaks off evenly along the cut line. Grind the glass end piece with the dremel.
