Drill bit for cutting wood

You can turn a drill into a universal tool by purchasing accessories for different purposes. Choosing the right attachments from a huge assortment is not easy. Therefore, it is recommended to take into account the following criteria.

Manufacturer

Different alloys and plastics are used for making the bits. Not always the material has sufficient strength and durability. High-quality tooling can be purchased by giving preference to well-known brands:

For applications, including drills and screwdrivers

Drill bits come in many shapes and forms. One of the signs of classification is the purpose of the nozzles.

drill, cutting, wood

Brush heads for drills

For grinding. This type of attachment is used for making the work surface smooth and presentable. It is made of highly effective abrasives (aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, synthetic diamond). An abrasive is fixed to the base of the tool by gluing or applying it to the base, which can be both cloth or paper.

For milling. The range of tasks, solved by this kind of devices, is wide. It includes: work with end edges. High-quality alignment of grooves, etc. By supplementing the tool with auxiliary supports and attachments, it is possible to obtain from a drill the equipment that fully performs the functions of a milling machine.

For polishing. Appearance of the tool resembles a sanding. The difference lies in the material used for production of the working part of the tool. These are usually made of soft fabric, felt or foam rubber.

For scraping. Brushes are another name for attachments. They are made of wire or other rigid materials. Purpose of the bit is to remove old coatings or roughen up wood. Scope of application is limited to roughing work, which is carried out before sanding and polishing.

For cutting. High price and complexity are the distinguishing features of this type. Functions of the tool equipped with such a nozzle are equal to the purpose of an electric jigsaw. With such a device there is an opportunity to perform cutting of wooden workpieces with thickness up to 20 mm. Products are also suitable for cutting some alloys, plastics.

For working with screws. The simplest type of bit. It is used in combination with tools that can operate at low speeds. Producers produce kits containing tooling with different variants of cross-sections. This widens the range of applications.

Flexible shaft. The drill includes a gearbox and an electric motor. They are enclosed in a volumetric body, which reduces the maneuverability of the tool. This disadvantage can be eliminated by installing a flexible shaft. thanks to this solution it is possible to penetrate into small hollows and other hard-to-reach places. Uses for riveting: grinding, engraving, deburring, milling, drilling, polishing.

A riveting tool for your drill/driver

The riveting bit. Special equipment is available for riveting. Buying it to perform a small amount of work is considered an unreasonable waste of money. Play around with the situation by equipping the drill with a special riveting tool. Most often the tool is equipped with rivets of different parameters.

Eccentric. The practical application tool for many tasks in the immediate vicinity of the edge of the workpiece. Finishing wood or making a hole in hard-to-reach places becomes a daily chore with minimal effort.

Angular. Purpose of the attachment. making holes in areas where a conventional drill cannot penetrate. It is made up of a housing consisting of two parts. They are positioned at a right angle. The drive spindle is located inside. Also has a unit that holds the drill bit and makes it rotate.

Design features

SPARTA drill bit holder for sharpening drills, D 3, 5-10 mm

The modern assortment of nozzles is notable for its variety. Products have characteristic design features:

Disc-sharpening tool. Available in several versions. The abrasive surface is unchanged. The grinding tool is made of rubber and plastic. The polishing nozzle has a surface of fine sandpaper. On sale, there are also designs that can adjust the angle of the abrasive fixation rod.

Cup-shaped. This type of fixture is used for removing old paint and other operations involving rough treatment of wood. Bowl-shaped designs have a characteristic shape, tightly fixed brush, which is made of abrasive nylon or wire material. Tooling selection is based on the degree of alignment of the working plane.

Drums. Mainly used for processing of end pieces, piercing holes. The design resembles a barrel. Its shape is correct cylindrical. Working area of the tool is covered by abrasive tape. Drum products perfectly cope with the sanding of wooden parts. In the process of rotation they perform quality passage over the roundness and holes of the processed material.

Face. Designs of this type of nozzles are characterized by external differences, materials of which they are made. Scope of application of end tooling captures the processing of the inner surface of the part and the holes in the initial and final stage of grinding.

Disc-shaped. It is a variety of cup-shaped structures. The distinguishing quality is the arrangement of hairs. They are directed in different directions (in the opposite direction). This solution enables workpieces made of wood in places where penetration is impossible because of the bulkiness of the drill body.

Petal. Another name for this kind of products. fan. The nozzles have a stem to which a large number of sheets of sandpaper are fixed. Outwardly the tooling resembles a flower. Area of application of the lobe design is grinding and polishing with a radius pass of the tool across the working surface. It is reasonable to use the tool for accurate processing of details with difficult relief.

Soft. The products are characterized by minimum resistance to abrasion. Used for polishing work. Nozzles are made of foam rubber, leather, felt. The rounded design is characterised by a solid, rounded shape and a reliable axle mount.

Number of elements in the set, pcs.

Assortment can contain various numbers of bits. Each manufacturer has its own way of equipping the tools, but it necessarily takes into account the positions of the most popular products. 2 to 349 tools are packed. Depending on the number of items in the organizer, the price of the set changes.

Drill bit or economy version of the sabre saw

Hello all!) A little review of drill/electric screwdriver attachment, which expands the usage of the latter. Generally, there were drill bits even in the post-Soviet time, but they are more of a rarity than mass copies. But the Chinese are already on the ball. If you want to know what it is and what it is with, then please follow this link below. There will be disassembly and example of work. So, it will go about such nozzle for a drill-sabel saw Generally, inexpensive nozzles and other attachments, expanding functional of storage drill are interesting, for at occasional use very much rescue, and stand inexpensive and take places a little, much less, than the high-grade separate tool. So I was curious to compare and evaluate how comfortable it is to use compared to a normal tool.

The tool came quickly, packaging. cardboard box with polyethylene foam cell Included three saws (different), a hex key for the chuck, the manual and the nozzle Saw a different length and tooth: for quick wood cutting, just to cut wood (his tongue does not dare to call it accurate), and for cutting metal (short, with a shallow tooth). Sabel nozzle is not very big, the body is made of solid plastic saw blade lock is not quick-release, made of special screw, a screw fixates and presses a saw blade in the lock. We set the saw into the slot of the chuck. slightly tighten the screw. Now we need a drill, preferably a cordless one Clamp the saw head into the chuck of a drill or an electric screwdriver. If you use a cordless tool, you get an extra bonus in the mobility))))

Before working, I check what’s inside the body of the nozzle. In order to disassemble the hedge, you only need to unscrew 4 screws Inside is a crank mechanism. The shaft is mounted on an LMxxUU linear bearing and on the other side there is a support roller. The grease is present, you can periodically fill it up if there was a lot of work Putting back together, trying to work In principle, if the drill has a lock on (or duct tape on the trigger), you can work with one hand.

Looking for the victim, the easiest application is pruning orchard trees. Sawing down a dry branch. Sawing motion in the picture

In the photo you can see that the cut is clean, in general it was fast enough, it took me longer to get used to it, it saws as well as a usual saber saw. The important points: you have to press the stop to the material, plus the material itself to fix from “back and forth”. Excessive material vibration (branches) reduces the effectiveness of the sabre saw head The working principle is as follows: press the clamp, hold down the tool. Smoothly squeeze the trigger of the electric screwdriver, hold the body of the sabre saw head with your other hand.

You don’t have to push too hard. the teeth on the saw are big, the sawdust flies right away, one squeeze and the branch is cut. It is possible to turn the drill at least upside down. as convenient as it is. It does not affect the quality of work. Well and in general, the tool is compact, self-contained. Separate attachment does not occupy much space. I find the nozzle interesting. Really easy to work with. A big plus is that the nozzle is compact, you can put it in the same case / bag with an electric screwdriver or drill. And throw a couple of saws next to it. It is suitable for sporadic work, when it is necessary to saw or trim something, but it is not desirable to take up with a hacksaw. For a long time to work is not very comfortable The specificity of cutting with a saber saw. the material must be fixed, and the saw.To be held firmly in two hands. Otherwise there is an unwanted vibration, which negates all efforts to cut. Yes, and in general it greatly reduces the effectiveness of the nozzle. is easier then cut with a hacksaw (Or break).

The serious disadvantages are the need to work with two hands. inconvenient. you need to find a third hand (or other body parts) to hold the material you are sawing. Well and in general, as a consequence of the overall cheapness of the nozzle. the lack of a quick-clamping mechanism for saws. If you change tips often, it’s annoying, and the key has to be stored somewhere.

A huge plus for the Chinese. they have worked out a simple technology to convert the rotation from the drill into a variety of nozzles. Drill/electric screwdriver bits for cutting sheet metal (scissors), rivet cutters, nail guns, etc., are available.п.

Material used

Grinding pads are made of different materials. Their choice depends on the surface to be treated and the work to be done. For example, you need a hard nozzle to remove rust and paint, and a soft nozzle for polishing.

  • Soft. They remove primer and putty, rust marks, and are used for polishing and cleaning dirt. Thanks to the soft action during work, the metal is not heated and does not deteriorate, which increases the quality of grinding.
  • Sanding pad. The most popular attachment on the drill for sanding wood. It varies in grain size and roughness, which allows using it for different types of work. from rough surface cleaning to finishing work on parts.
  • Grinding stones. These are special abrasive stones, harder and more durable. With their help you can remove defects from the surface. They are usually used for the preparation and smoothing of concrete, glass, ceramics.

When choosing, it is important to focus not only on the material, but also on its hardness and grit size. For example, felt can be used for polishing a car.

Nozzles on the drill, is it worth buying

Most often, an electric drill with attachments is used in the absence of a special tool, and its purchase is not justified. For example, you should not buy a grinder if you need to grind a single workpiece. It is much more practical to buy a drill with a set of accessories and use it as a universal tool.

It should be noted that the choice of accessories for the drill is very wide. They are not limited to a simple tool for grinding and polishing. If necessary, the drill can take on the role of a cutter, electric screwdriver, jigsaw, construction mixer and even metal scissors.

Please note! Plus, a drill with an attachment is an excellent option for machining workpieces in hard-to-reach places.

Of the disadvantages of this tool can be mentioned except that the low efficiency of an electric drill when working with certain types of attachments, for example, to grind a large area is much easier to a full grinder. Nevertheless, given the affordable price of even the highest quality nozzles, a set of basic ones should be in every home workshop.

Varieties of devices for drill extensions

The most common is such a device for the drill as a stop, which allows you to simply and quickly drill holes to the desired depth. The design of the simplest fixture includes an auxiliary handle and the fixture itself with a metric scale on its surface.

A more complex design and, accordingly, greater functionality has a parallel stop, with which you can control not only the depth of the hole performed, but also the position of its axis relative to the surface of the machined product or structure. This type of attachments are available for tools used in construction and repair, and for wood drills.

Picking out blind holes for furniture hinges with a forstner drill is made much easier with a drill stand

Parallel stops, designed for use with tools for construction and repair work, are installed on heavy-duty drills, with which holes in concrete and brick constructions are drilled. This type of attachment consists of a stop with a scale and an auxiliary handle for the drill. Selected models of parallel blades have an integrated suction unit for removal of processing waste, which is connected to a vacuum cleaner.

Popular among home craftsmen are devices for the drill, with which it can be used to perform carpentry work. Drill, equipped with such an attachment. it is, in fact, a small milling unit. Its design includes a vertical stand with rails on which moves a special basket with power tools fixed in it. Of course, such a vertical milling machine is not able to provide the same accuracy and productivity of the machining performed, as specialized equipment, but for performing simple works in the home workshop, it is suitable.

Slots, gaps or profiles are cut with this cutter head

Drill bits and attachments that can be used to drill at an angle make up a rather large category of accessories for hand-held electric tools. This drill bit works in places where a regular drill can no longer be used. Working head, depending on the model of the equipment may be located at various angles (up to 90 °) in relation to the axis of rotation of the main drill chuck. The most popular and in demand are devices for drilling at an angle of 90 degrees.

Drill stand with adjustable tilt angle makes it easy to drill oblique holes

On today’s market there are widely represented devices for drilling holes, which allow not only to limit the depth of the created holes and control the verticality of their axis, but also to use the drill as a small cutter. Such devices are especially popular among home craftsmen who are engaged in self-made furniture.

With the use of various working attachments on the drill for woodworking, you can perform many technological operations (in particular, side drilling holes in products round or more complex configuration, requiring the use of special inserts). Some models of such devices are equipped with special suction, connected to a vacuum cleaner, which removes dust and small shavings from the processing area. It should be borne in mind that even such functional devices do not allow you to turn a drill into a full-fledged hand milling machine, which has the same operating capabilities, but provides a higher accuracy and quality of processing performed.

No one will dispute the fact that it is much more convenient to use for the formation of holes not a drill, but a drilling machine (and the accuracy of processing with the help of stationary equipment is higher). Meanwhile, even with a hand-held power tool you can make the simplest drilling machine, for which the drill guide attachment is used. Most modern models of such a device are equipped with a vise for securing the part during machining, as well as a frame on which such a vise can freely move. The power tool itself is placed in a special holder for the drill (basket), which is a universal clamping device and can be used for almost any model of drilling tool. Such a device, on the stand of which a precise metric scale is applied, is a very useful acquisition for any home handyman, as it allows you to make holes with less labor and higher accuracy.

A drilling stand paired with a vise adds the ability to clamp workpieces and even grind them

The attachments to the drill, allowing it to be used as a wood lathe, are very popular. Such tooling is fixed on the work table, and the drill itself acts as its drive mechanism. To install a drill in the construction of such a attachment a special stand and a fixing mechanism are used.

Such attachments are available in different designs, with a variety of cutting tools and attachments, make it easy to realize the dream of many home masters to have at their disposal their own lathe. Of course, a lathe driven by an ordinary electric drill is not comparable with specialized equipment neither in terms of working life, nor in terms of accuracy and productivity of machining performed. If you use such a attachment in intensive mode, the electric drill will not withstand considerable and continuous loads and will eventually fail. That’s why, in order not to remain without a drill, you should use this attachment to perform uncomplicated and not too long wood turning works.

Among the most popular devices for the drill are attachments that allow you to turn such a tool into an electric grinder or emery machine. Even inexperienced sharpeners have no problems with their installation. Such attachments can be used not only for sharpening saw blades and circular saw blades, but also for restoring geometric parameters of drills, lathe cutters, chisels and planer blades. Thus, using such devices on the drill for sharpening, you can not only solve many domestic issues with their help, but also save on recourse to qualified professionals. Successfully use such an emery, including for sharpening cutting tools, can even those who have no experience in this field.

You can use emery or sanding discs as working attachments of this machine

Additional equipment on the drill is necessary not only for home craftsmen, but also for professional furniture makers. For example, the milling attachment for corner joints in joinery and furniture, which can be used to produce grooves in the corner joints. No need to clamp workpieces in the clamping device using this attachment. It ensures high precision of machining, and in order to create a groove of required width and depth there are special regulating elements in its equipment.

A flexible drive or an angle adapter is available, enabling you to use your drill power even in the hardest-to-reach places.

The flexible drive unit and the drill bit are held in the drill chuck at one end. Their other end is equipped with a clamping device, in which you can fix a drilling, milling, abrasive and any other tool with a shank of a suitable diameter. When choosing between these two devices, you should consider that the flexible drive in terms of machining hard-to-reach places has more capabilities than the angle drill nozzle. The bending angle of such a drive is not limited to 90°, it can be anything.

The question of whether it is possible to use an electric drill as a drive for a pump designed for pumping liquids is not without merit. To practically solve this problem, you can not invent a different self-made, do not puzzle over the manufacture of a secure attachment to the drill on the body of the typical pump and over what to use an adapter. All these questions have already been thought over by specialists and implemented in the design of the pump attachment.

Despite its small size, the pump head can provide quite a lot of pressure

Such a drill pump, although not intended for long-term and intensive use, can effectively solve many problems. In particular, it can successfully pump small amounts of viscous liquids (such as oil or paint, for example) as well as plain water. To change the speed of pumping liquid medium, it is enough to change the number of revolutions committed by the drill chuck. Since the pump bodies for drills, as a rule, are made of plastic, they do not have a long service life, but this drawback is compensated by the low cost of such devices.

The furniture jig ensures precise alignment and perpendicularity of the holes drilled with the drill

Electric drills are often used in conjunction with special templates, which not only increase the accuracy of performing drilling and further assembly, but also greatly accelerate the processing. Templates for professionals are made of metal, retain their geometric parameters for a long time. For home use you can purchase an inexpensive plastic template, which, although not as durable as its metal counterpart, ensures high accuracy of machining.

Drilling templates are divided into household and professional

The meaning of templates for drilling is that their design includes the size and location of the holes, most often performed in the elements of furniture designs. So, there are templates designed for drilling holes for fixing furniture hinges, cutting in locks and installing furniture ties. In such templates, not only the distance between the holes to be made, but also the distance at which such holes should be from the edge of the workpiece to be machined is accurately maintained.

Consider popular wood router bits used in conjunction with a drill.

Drill bit

The shaft (spindle) of the router, which rotates the router, gives out from 10 000 rpm to 30 000 rpm.

Electric drill on average 10 times less, maximum 3000 rpm. The screwdriver is only 400 rpm at first speed, up to 1500 rpm at second speed.

Drills. cutters work very well at these speeds with the drill. First and foremost is the Forstner drill bit. It is called a drill, as this tool is designed to drill holes. But by design, it is a mill.

Förstner drill

This cutter has a very clever and effective design. that is why these cutters are widely used all over the world. Has three working elements:

  • center sharpened cone. Centers the cutter and prevents it from shifting sideways, which is especially important when you start drilling;
  • Side cutters (undercutting). Cleanly cut the circumference of the hole diameter, minimizing tearing and chipping of the workpiece around the hole;
  • Horizontal (main) cutters. Are positioned strictly perpendicular to the axis of drilling, and also select exactly the bottom of the hole, if it is not through.

This is important when drilling holes for seating round furniture elements, other joinery parts. A regular twist drill with a tapered bottom leaves the same tapered hole. The Forstner drill drills a hole with a straight “bottom.

Sold both individually and in sets of 5 to 10 pcs., Different diameters. Mainly from 8 mm to 40 mm. Available in diameters of 56 mm and larger.

Slotted

An ordinary slot cutter from a hand router is practically not suitable for a drill. You can try to choose a groove with a drill and with her help, but the work will be performed roughly and slowly. For the above reasons. the drills have low RPM. Compensate for the low RPM of the slot cutters specially designed for drills.

The picture shows the slot cutter and the result of its work.

In essence, it is a file (rasp) on wood with a coarse tooth, but not flat, but round.

Chamfering, chamfering, edge chamfering

Processing the edges and ends of workpieces, chamfering is usually performed by a hand router. It is possible to perform such operations with a drill, if you use the appropriate accessories. Example of a drill cutter for chamfering the longitudinal edge and ends of workpieces:

Low drill speeds are compensated for by the large number of cutting edges. While an electric hand router cutter has only 2, drill cutters have 8 to 12.

For hinges

Selecting the fit for flat door and frame hinges with a drill is very difficult. A hand router is used for this. But round hinge drilling is easy even with an electric screwdriver. The previously described Forstner drill of appropriate diameter can be used for this.

Firewood Splitting Drill. Gimmick or Useful Tool

Furniture hinges with round seating have standard dimensions. This is what cutter manufacturers focus on. That is why you can always find Forstner drills with the right diameter for round furniture hinges on sale.

An example of this use on the following

Circular

The design of such drill cutters is clear from the name. It is a small disc with cutting teeth. Works on the same principle as the large circular saw blades. But applied due to the low power and speed of the drill and the size of the disc itself is not for sawing. Suitable for auxiliary work in various carpentry operations. For this you may need a special device for clamping and fixing the drill.

Tubular (crown)

Widespread and very effective for drills. The bits are used to cut holes of different diameters.

Even a low-powered drill works with the bits relatively easily, because the entire mass of the hole is not selected, but only the circumference is sawn through.

  • two shanks of different sizes to fit the bits, one with a centering drill that is repositionable;
  • a set of bits themselves;
  • hex key for locking the bits on the shank.

The peculiarity of cutters is that the circle selected from the hole is not drilled into chips, but remains intact.

There are other designs of tubular cutters. They look like an ordinary large-diameter spiral drill bit, hollow inside. There are cutting edges on the circumference of the face.

There is also a similar replacement crowns as in the photo, but instead of a monolithic bowl with teeth, a flexible circular saw is used. The tooling is weak, but good for soft, thin materials. This tool does not belong to cutters any more, but to circular saws, although it performs the same tasks as core cutters.

Spud

A burr is a tool used to finish off already made holes or machined surfaces. For example, a round hole is drilled, but the part for fitting has an oval shape or simply does not fit a little bit. For fitting use the burrs. They come in a variety of shapes and materials, including abrasive stone. Although it can be called a burr only conventionally. Classic burr milling cutters made of metal. An example of a set of such tooling at

Varieties of grinding aids

The grinding nozzle on the drill is made according to the same principle as the replacement blocks for polishing machines. The only difference is in installation. the connection of the drill with additional equipment is made with a pin to fix it, and the specialized machines use threads.

Their shapes and designs are varied and adapted for different types of work. According to this feature they can be classified into several groups.

Plate

A round nozzle with a flat base on which the sandpaper is glued. The main difficulty in working with this tool is the need to keep the drill at a right angle to the surface, which does not always work. It causes defects on the wood. To reduce the risk of product damage, it is better to choose rubber tips rather than plastic ones. Also when buying, make sure that there is a soft layer between the base and the sanding coat.

Such a sanding pad for wood is used in the process of preliminary or finish processing. it depends on its hardness and granularity. For ease of use, variations are made with the possibility of adjusting the angle of inclination.

Cup-shaped

This bowl-shaped variety helps get rid of old paint on the surface, sanding the wood and highlighting its texture. You can find a special brush for each type of work. Metal ones when processing wood release its fibers.

That’s why after its use the surface should be grinded with a plate nozzle, then a coat of paint or varnish can be applied. The natural wood grain will stand out on the product. The cup nozzle with a soft filler is convenient for scraping and fine polishing.

Discs

Their construction resembles a cup brush head. But they do have one special feature. the bristles are directed from the center of the disc to the edges. The surface is interfaced with the surface by using an end-face tool. They are also similar to the fan type, where the blades are set parallel to the base.

Their main purpose. treatment of hard-to-reach places, removal of old finish. They require some experience and skill to use, so it’s better to practice on an unwanted item.

Drum

Such grinding nozzles for the drill are made in the form of cylinders, on the lateral surface of which the sanding paper is glued. They are used to deburr wood, metal, or glass. They are most often used for sanding inside holes and for end-pieces.

Fanning tools

They can also be called petal sanders. This nozzle is a sanding disc, on which a lot of blades are installed throughout the plane. They consist of sandpaper blades; other abrasives may also be used.

There is another variety, which is shaped like a cylinder, and the petals are fixed along the entire side surface of the drum. Such drill bits are convenient for machining complex-shaped wooden parts.

Soft

They are used where gentle polishing is needed. Such nozzles are made of foam rubber, leather, felt or twisted rope. Suitable for machining lacquered or painted workpieces and for removing contaminants on surfaces that are sensitive to abrasion.

End-face grinding disc

It is a grinding stone made in the shape of a ball, cylinder or cone. There are variations made of soft material. It is most expedient to apply on small parts, in hard-to-reach places.

The abrasive nozzle on the drill is used for metal and glass products. Same principle as a file, but the speed results in better performance.

Soft polishing discs are needed for finish work.

Making the nozzle yourself

Homemade devices can save money, but this is not the main reason that makes people masters with their own hands. It often happens that there is no no nozzle at hand of the required shape and stiffness, and in the nearest stores such a thing can not be found. In such cases, it is possible to make the tool at home.

Based on a car valve

To construct a nozzle for sanding wood, you need a few valves from the machine, or at least one. Their lower part should be flat. If you need a big product, the exhaust valve from the truck is taken.

The fabrication is done in a few steps:

  • degrease the surface of the valve;
  • take the head of the required size. it can be rubber, foam, wood, or other dense material;
  • the parts are glued together with epoxy or polyurethane glue;
  • A circle is cut out of sandpaper with a diameter equal to the width of the base along with the roundings;
  • The entire circumference is cut from the edge to the center, but not reaching it;
  • The resulting petals are stacked on top of each other as the nozzle moves in the drill and secured;
  • the resulting cup of sandpaper is glued to the base, and the edges secured with staples.

For the most productive work, it is worth making several nozzles of different sizes and degrees of paper grit.

A simple screw device

It will require a long screw, sandpaper, a nut and two washers.

  • Put a washer on the screw;
  • Cut the sanding stone into square pieces;
  • in all pieces in the center to make a hole and thread them on a screw;
  • Place a second washer on top;
  • fasten the whole structure with a nut.

The device can process the cavities of wooden products. The disadvantage of this method is that when fixed in the drill chuck, the thread is crumpled, because of this, it is problematic to make a replacement sanding paper.
