STIHL MS 180. reliable and undemanding tool, but in need of repair, as well as no matter what technique. Next, let’s look at how the STIHL mc 180 chain saw disassembly, which is necessary for the design of the overhaul of the motor.

Repair of any machine must begin with a preliminary step, and the STIHL 180 is no exception. Before beginning the STIHL 180 chain saw disassembly procedure, remove the side cover, the chain and the guide bar from the chain saw. Next, using a compressor and a brush, you need to clean the chain saw from dirt, sawdust, oil and other smudges.

When cleaning the chain saw, special attention should be paid to the place where the chain saw’s drive sprocket is located. к. this is the dirtiest part.

In places where there is a huge accumulation of oil, there is an option to wash with unstained gasoline.

Specific disassembly STIHL 180, begins with the removal of the handle, which is attached to the body chain saw with 3 rubber buffers. To remove, you need to remove the plastic plugs from the inside cavity of the shock absorber, then, in the presence of a strong screwdriver, first squeeze the upper shock absorber, later the one that is close to the rear handle.

In the back of the handle is the throttle trigger, which is connected to the carburetor through a wire rod, if you set a goal to disconnect the rod from the throttle trigger, you need to unscrew two screws and disassemble the handle.

When the handle remains on one shock absorber, you need to unscrew the chainsaw body from the inside of the handle and breaking aside, remove the body from the last rubber.

Next, remove the upper cover housing and unscrew the 4 screws holding the starter, then you need to remove the cover oil tank and fuel tank. The starter is pretty easy to remove and there should be no fuss.

After removing the starter motor, the interior of the chainsaw should be cleaned, i.e. к. there is usually a lot of compressed sawdust on the housing under the starter.

Flywheel chain saw STIHL 180 is screwed with a huge effort, to remove it will need a head with an iron screwdriver. The nut holding the flywheel is unscrewed with a 13 head.

To block the crankshaft from turning, you must unscrew the plug and through the spark plug hole install the piston stopper, if not, use an old starter cord from the starter, with the knots tied to this address and immersed in the cylinder through the spark plug hole.

It is strictly prohibited to delay the flywheel from turning by installing between its ribs and the body of the power screwdriver and other tools, with this method of locking the rotation, the flywheel blades can not withstand the load and break.

If the piston in the cylinder is blocked, the flywheel nut can be unscrewed. The thread in the nut is straight, so it must be turned to the left side. After loosening the nut it is not necessary to remove it completely, rather unscrew it until its upper edge aligns with the tip of the shaft, after which the soft metal tapping block is placed on the nut and a sharp blow is made on it. The handwheel pops off the shaft when you get a hard blow and can be removed without any tools.

While disassembling the clutch, it is necessary to dismantle the drive sprocket. To do this you need to take the sprocket and needle nose pin out of their slots.

The STIHL STIHL 180 chain saw in general malfunctions

The STIHL STIHL 180 chain saw, for which you are responsible for identifying and repairing faults, must be operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The starter button, for example, should only be engaged after the master has checked the chain tension and made sure that the respective tanks are filled with oil and fuel mixture. Always hold the chain saw securely in place before beginning work.

The preparatory phase

Repair of any machine should begin with preparatory work, and the STIHL 180 is no exception. Before you can disassemble the STIHL 180 chain saw it is first necessary to remove the side cover, the chain and the guide bar. Next, using a compressor and a brush, you need to clean the chainsaw of dirt, sawdust, oil residue and other.

When cleaning the saw, special attention should be paid to the area where the chain saw’s drive sprocket is located, because. к. this is the most contaminated area.

In areas where there is a lot of oil, you can rinse with clean gasoline.

Removing the handle

To disassemble the STIHL 180 you must first remove the handle, which is fastened to the STIHL 180 frame with three rubber buffers. To remove it, it is necessary to remove plastic plugs from the inside cavity of shock absorbers, then using a strong screwdriver, first squeeze out the upper shock absorber, then the one closest to the rear handle.

In the back of the handle is installed throttle trigger, which is connected to the carburetor through a wire rod, in order to disconnect the rod from the throttle trigger, you must unscrew two screws and disassemble the handle.

When the handle remains on one shock absorber, it is necessary to unscrew the body of the chainsaw from the inside of the handle and, breaking to the side, remove the body from the last rubber.

Removing the starter

The next step is to remove the upper cover of the housing and loosen the 4 screws that secure the starter, after which you must remove the oil tank and fuel tank covers. The starter is easy enough to remove and shouldn’t be a problem.

After removing the starter motor, it is necessary to clean the chainsaw interior that has been opened, i.e. к. there is usually a large amount of compressed fine sawdust on the housing under the starter.

Faults in the pump and the system as a whole

As you know, nothing is everlasting in this world and over time, everything has to be repaired. The STIHL oil system of the ms 180 is no exception, and has its own specific faults. Let’s look at them in detail.

Signs of a faulty lubrication system are as follows:

  • The chainsaw chain is completely dry and not shiny;
  • oil is not coming out of the oil tank;
  • The chain is stretching quickly and this happens all the time;
  • The bar is slipping sideways when you are sawing;
  • the tire gets hot and in the area of the drive sprocket, the paint melts.

All of these signs are an indication, either directly or indirectly, that there is a problem with the chain lubrication system.

replacing, stihl, chain, piston

the first thing to do after you suspect the chain is not getting oil is to check the oil flow. There are two ways to do this. The first way is described in details in the instruction to the tool and is as follows: start up the chainsaw, increase gas pressure as much as possible and direct it towards some obstacle.

If the lube system is working, oil will run off the tip of the bar and a streak of oil droplets will appear on the surface where the bar is facing. If there is still a problem with the system, the surface is still clean.

The second way is to remove the bar from the chainsaw and start it. As the engine speed increases, oil will flow from the oil channel in the place where the bus shank is installed, if this does not happen, it is necessary to look for the cause of the malfunction.

Diagnose

To diagnose the problem start with the STIHL 180 and check the oil receiver (filter). As a rule, if the filter is heavily contaminated, the oil supply may stop.

To save money, if the filter is clogged, you can try to clean it by washing it in gasoline.

Next, it is necessary to remove the sprocket drum, and check the condition of the drive pinion. The threads on it should be well pronounced, not nicked or have any other defects, also with the gear removed, you should check the wire lever. Otherwise it should be tight around the pinion and not rotate, otherwise the pinion stands still and does not transmit power to the pump, which can cause an interruption in oil flow.

If all of the above methods of detection and elimination of malfunctions did not give results, it is necessary to apply extreme measures, i.e. е. disassemble the pump.

How to remove the pump

The oil pump is installed on the right side of the base of the housing and the oil pipe from the gasoline tank is connected to it in the same place. To remove the pump, you must first release the saw from the handle by unscrewing the rear handle of the unit and disconnecting the throttle control rod. In the next step, you need to take out the plugs of the handle shock absorbers and with the help of a strong slotted screwdriver, press them out of their places on the handle.

replacing, stihl, chain, piston

After removing the handle, the chainsaw body is turned upside down. The hose going from the oil tank to the pump will be visible at once. It is necessary to remove it from its seat.

The pump itself can be removed with the screw with M5 thread and a wide washer. The length of the screw should be about 45-50 mm. Put a washer on the screw and screw it into the pump (the inside of the pump is threaded). Further, as the screw is screwed in, a stop from the washer will force the oil pump up the threads. This is how the pump is removed from its seat. Before we get started we recommend that you read an article on how to disassemble the STIHL 180.

To understand how to remove the pump better, watch the following video. The chain saw master demonstrates in detail how to remove the oil pump from the chain saw and describes the main faults in the feeding system in the video.

The STIHL oil pump is a robust and high quality piece of equipment, so it should only be replaced if all other system components have been checked.

After the pump is removed, it must be cleaned and blown out. As a rule, the main problem with an oil pump is that it is clogged. After fixing it, you can reinstall the pump.

The pump only needs to be changed if the blockage cannot be removed.

The Reason for the Oil Dripping on the Base of the Chainsaw

The STIHL 180 chain saw has a characteristic problem in that the oil hose is not sufficiently sealed in the chain saw housing and leaks in the area. To fix it you need only remove the STIHL MS 180 saw handle, disconnect the hose, wash and degrease the seat in the housing and the hose shank, then apply sealant and put the hose back in. This simple procedure will reliably remove the fault and the oil will stop flowing.

STIHL MS 180 oil supply repair

Owners of this particular chain lubrication system should be prepared for an unpleasant situation such as a chain oil leak. Oil can leak while you are working on a tool or even when it is just lying around.

What is the cause of the problem?? The thing is that oil leaks because of leakage in the area where the hose from the oil tank and the pump connects.

To fix STIHL MS 180 oil leaks, it may be advisable to take the power tool apart.

  • Check the hose; if it is damaged, replace it with another. Alternatively, try degreasing the hose and rinsing and putting it on a sealant, should make everything work.
  • Check your oil filter for breakage, clean it (if you filled it with used oil)
  • Could also be caused by a clogged starter, which creates a vacuum in the fuel tank, and affects the fuel supply. The problem may be in the carburetor adjustment and may be clogged channels or air filter, you need to carefully clean the filter and carburetor channels.

In general the main problem is because of bad oil.

It is not recommended to put oil in a chainsaw that is not intended for!

What oil to use for your STIHL 180 chain saw?

  • Do not spare money for the original oil. 2-stroke STIHL HP oil is a bit more expensive but the cleaning costs even more.
  • The fuel to pour quality can be and Mobil 1, and for lubrication suit three-phase, in any case do not fill the waste.
  • Of inexpensive options mineral oil 15-40, in winter 10-30. You could use M8, for example, or M10.

Remember personal safety while operating the chainsaw.

Remember that chain saw performance is affected by the quality of oil you use. Low quality oil may be the reason for the tool not working properly and can have a negative effect on parts.

Check and clean the STIHL MS 180 oil pump periodically to ensure that it runs smoothly. This way the oil supply process will be normal.

STIHL MS-180 carburetor

The STIHL MS-180 has a carburetor with a single no-load adjustment screw. The full-load nozzle is not adjustable, i.e. it cannot be changed.

It is important to know the basic rules for setting the idle speed:

1) Check the air filter and change it if necessary;

2) Check the spark arrester, change or clean it if necessary. You can then switch the engine on and preheat it.

Repairing the STIHL MS 180 carburetor

Repairing the STIHL MS 180 carburetor is a demanding process. Note that when repairing the risk of abrupt changes in the cylinder and piston group is practically absent.

If the chainsaw does not start, then apply the following steps:

1) Open and close the gas tank cap;

2) it is advisable to remove the candle and then drain it;

If after that there were no positive results, it is better to control the condition of the air filter, the process of gasoline supply and the functioning of the spark plug.

This problem is related to the valve (blindpick), which is clogged, and as a consequence, a vacuum is formed. To eliminate this inconvenience, you need to clean the valve (blind plug) with a needle.

How to change the piston on a STIHL 180 chain saw

As the need to replace the old piston and install the newest, you should know how to do it correctly and observe a certain method of action. You also need to have a small slotted screwdriver, a special STIHL combination wrench, a power screwdriver, a hammer, a soft material hammer, a compressor and a stopper for the STIHL piston.

Getting to work on replacing the piston or piston assembly, the chainsaw should be cleaned with the maximum quality dirt. Next, the work is carried out according to the following method:

  • Remove the top cover from the saw and unscrew the spark plug.
  • Remove the side cover.
  • Using a power screwdriver, remove the stoppers from the chainsaw shock absorbers, then its handle is detached from the body.
  • Next, the chain sprocket and the starter must be removed.
  • Insert the piston lock in the spark plug hole and undo the flywheel nut and the clutch.
  • Remove the flywheel, clutch and oil pump worm drive mechanism that is located behind the clutch.
  • Unscrew the two screws fixing the carburetor and the air filter. To remove the filter, throttle lever and STIHL carburettor.
  • Remove the ignition coil and muffler.

When all these operations are done, you need to clean the saw from dirt, then turn it upside down and remove the four screws that secure the motor to the chainsaw body. After removing the screws, the engine is separated from the housing and cleaned again.

On the removed engine unscrew and remove the pallet, then the piston complete with crankshaft is removed from the engine.

Choosing a piston for the STIHL 180 chain saw

Handle removal

Specific disassembly of the STIHL 180, begins by removing the handle, which is attached to the body of the chainsaw using 3 rubber shock absorbers. To remove, it is necessary to remove the plastic plugs from the inside cavity of the shock absorbers, then using a strong screwdriver, squeeze first the upper shock absorber, then the one closest to the back handle.

In the back of the handle is the throttle trigger, which is connected to the carburetor through a wire rod, if you set out to disconnect the rod from the throttle trigger, you need to unscrew the two screws and disassemble the handle.

When the handle remains on one shock absorber, you need to unscrew the chain saw body from the inside of the handle, and breaking to the side, remove the body from the last rubber.

Removing the flywheel

The chain saw STIHL 180 handwheel is screwed tight, so to remove it you need a head with a metal screwdriver. The flywheel nut can be removed with a 13 head.

To block the crankshaft from turning, you need to unscrew the plug and through the spark plug hole install a piston stopper, if it is not available, you can use an old starter cord, with knots tied to it and immersed in the cylinder through the spark plug hole.

It is strictly forbidden to keep the flywheel from turning by installing a screwdriver or other tools between the ribs and the body, this method of locking the flywheel blades can not withstand the load and break.

After the piston is locked in the cylinder you can unscrew the flywheel nut. The thread in the nut is common, so it should be turned to the left side. Having loosened the nut, it is not necessary to remove it up to the end, it is enough to unscrew it until its upper edge is level with the end of the shaft, after which the soft metal punch is installed on the nut and a sharp blow is made on it. That way the flywheel will come off the shaft and can be easily removed without any additional tools.

To assemble the tool

The chainsaw is reassembled in the reverse order. First place the sprocket on the needle bearing, then the clutch drum, the washer, and the clutch itself. Screw it in counter-clockwise, but without excessive force. The piston also needs to be clamped, but with left-hand rotation a few millimeters before it reaches the maximum upper point.

Note that sometimes the oil drive is equipped with a spring that transmits motion from the sprocket to the pump. If the spring is not in place, the oil will not flow to the chain. Usually the correct position is marked with a color, the risks, in the absence of those you need to slowly rotate the part until the characteristic click.

Next you need to fit the bar to the chainsaw. To install the chain, you must loosen the handbrake by pulling the lever toward you (toward the crank). Here it is important that the teeth of the chain fall into the grooves of the sprocket. If you are not careful, you might miss this point, which would lead to a rapid deterioration of the chain. The correct direction is marked on the frame with characteristic pictograms. After installation it needs to be tightened until it is in working order.

At the end you need to remove the piston lock, install the spark plug in its place, the air filter. Secure the top cover.

If it is necessary to remove the sprocket from the chainsaw to replace it with a new one, the part must be purchased in advance. Otherwise you can take the worn part and together with it go to a specialized store, where the seller will help you choose an analogue.

How to repair a STIHL 180 chain saw

Question: What is the clearance on the STIHL ms 180 chain saw rings?

Answer: With new. 0.2-0.4mm.

Question: How do I know the original piston on the STIHL ms 180 when buying a chain saw?? I saw a black one in a store. My chainsaw is gray, why is it like this??

Answer: Black. The marking on original STIHL parts must be stamped with an “S”.

Question: How can I remove carbon deposits on the MT 180 without removing the cylinder and damaging the engine?? And the guide bar is 7mm deep in the groove, how soon should I change it??

Answer: We do not recommend removing the carbon deposits with any additives. If the depth of the groove is less than 5 mm, the bar must be replaced.

Question: I had to take my STIHL 180 chain saw apart today, first time in 4 years. The chainsaw has stopped idling after 10 to 20 minutes of use. The carburetor is disassembled to a screw. there’s oil in the sawdust, i flushed it, blew it out, put it back together, only got it going in 5 tries.

It’s fine, but it’s a lot of rpm. I don’t remember how the adjustment screw was, I screwed it in as best I could. Turn it by ear? and what does it regulate, the idle speed or the mixture quality??

Answer: this is the idle speed adjustment screw, unscrew it with the engine running until the chain stops turning. The 180m Stihl has an unadjustable carburetor, only the idle speed is adjustable.

I usually screw this screw in after rebuilding the carburetor so that the clearance between the head of the screw and the carburetor body was a little over 1 mm. And then I tighten up the idle speed a little bit.

Should be on the tachometer. but you can do it that way. so the tensioned chain doesn’t move when the engine is warm.

Question: Can you tell me what to clean in the carburetor? The mesh is clean, under the needle is clean, I have not unscrewed the adjustment screws, I’m afraid if I add to these symptoms razregulirovaniya carburetor. you’ll definitely be able to give it a cross. maybe soak it in acetone?

Answer: For the carburetor. Unscrew anything you can unscrew. Remove the caps, shutoff needle, adjustment screws, jets. Do not take out the small caps inside, on the contrary, check if they are peeled off. And blow from a thin nozzle under high pressure into all the holes, starting with the ones where the adjustment screws were screwed in. Then when reassembling the carburetor, screw in the adjusting bolts 1 1/4 turn and start adjusting on the tachometer.

Question: On the STIHL ms 180 chain saw the ignition is set on the timing marks with regard to vmt or otherwise?

A: Magnetic pair should be in front of the ignition module at a certain distance.

STIHL chain saw mc 180 STIHL STIHL STIHL STIHL STIHL STIHL STIHL STIHL 180 can use mineral oil for two-stroke water- and air-cooled engines

Answer: Can not! You can use oil for air-cooled two-stroke engines! We recommend STIHL oil only.

Question: Is there an adjustment for the oil flow to the chain??

Answer: No. Standard adjustment. At full throttle oil is supplied to the chain, at idle no.

Question: STIHL 180 chain saw is broken. Construction workers were sawing aerated concrete with it on a construction site. Bottom line. no piston, saw won’t start, tire and chain in the trash. Called the service center, they said the original piston 6300 and the Chinese (Champion). 2000. Plus oil seals and gaskets. The work for free (surprised myself).

Does it make sense to rebuild this saw, if you put a Chinese piston there (the saw will rarely be used at the cottage) and change all the gaskets? The bar and chain are new, I do not have to buy. The whole repair job is going to cost about 3,500. Does that make sense??

Answer: You should also replace the crankshaft, the bearings are probably worn out. Make sure to disassemble and flush the carburetor. There is a lot of dirt. Change all filters. You’ll end up with a Champion saw in a Stihl body. For occasional use at the cottage. It will do fine.

Question: I recently bought a STIHL chainsaw ms 180, worked for about 4 tanks, when cleaning I found that the chain is not tightened, but when working it did not feel, started tightening, screws twisted.

When I looked closely at the screw, I was horrified, it was quite bent out of shape, tried to unscrew it. did not succeed. Can you please tell me if there is any way to get it out without going to the service?

Answer: It just pops out. Screw it out with a screwdriver, take it out with the guide. The threads on it are metric, the nuts are easy to pick up. Only after dressing be sure to run the nut. to check the condition of the threads. The nut is long and can get caught if the screw is turned a little wrong.

Question: STIHL ms 180 combination lever pops out of groove on saw housing during shifts. What can I do??

Answer: The seat of the control shaft is worn. Saw body (sump) replacement.

Question: How much piston pressure should I put on my STIHL 180 chain saw??

Answer: If you mean by pressure. the compression, it must be at least 8 bar.

Question: What is the size of the bearing on this saw??

Answer: 6002 deep groove ball bearing.

Question: I bought a new STIHL MS180 C chain saw. No experience. To change the chain tension follow the instructions: lift up the wing nut knob and try to loosen the wing nut by turning it counterclockwise. But the knob does not turn. Maybe I missed a procedure?

Answer: Lift the wing nut knob and loosen the wing nut by turning the tensioning wheel to the left.

Question: My STIHL mc 180 stops working. When switching off, the change-over control shaft comes out of its seat. out of the lug. I took the cover off. I see the throttle linkage is loose from the carburetor. Put it all in place and reassemble. And it wouldn’t start.

I noticed that when the lever is in the down position on the starter, the choke doesn’t close all the way to the carburetor should it be like this, or should it close completely? may not start because of that?

Replacing the piston on the STIHL MS 180 chain saw

Here the video we will show you how to, perform a piston replacement on chain saw STIHL MS180, crankshaft oil seals.

A distinctive feature of the cylinder on the STIHL MS 180 is that it has two compression rings, although in fact all of his main competitors have only one. As the manufacturer claims, installing a pair of rings, allows you to better stabilize the piston in the works, to enhance its cooling and increase compression in the engine, thereby improving startup.

How to change a piston on a STIHL 180 chain saw

If you want to replace the old piston and install the newest, you should know how to do it correctly and follow a certain method of action. Also need to have a small slotted screwdriver, a special combination wrench STIHL, power screwdriver, hammer, a mallet of soft material, compressor and piston lock STIHL.

Getting to work on the replacement of the piston as it is also called a piston group assembly, chainsaw must be cleaned with the maximum quality from contaminants. Next, the work is carried out according to the following method:

  • Remove the top cover from the saw and unscrew the spark plug.
  • The side cover is removed.
  • Using a power screwdriver to remove the stoppers from the chain saw shock absorbers, after that its handle is detached from the body.
  • Next, remove the chainring and starter.
  • In the spark plug hole install the piston stopper and unscrew the flywheel nut and the clutch.
  • Remove the flywheel, clutch and oil pump worm gear, which is located behind the clutch.
  • Unscrew the two screws securing the carburetor and air filter. Remove the filter, engine lever and STIHL carburetor.
  • Remove the ignition coil and muffler.

If such operations are carried out, it is necessary to clean the saw from dirt again, after that turn it over with the bottom upwards and unscrew the four screws fastening the motor to the chainsaw body. Having removed the screws the engine is separated from the body and additionally cleaned.

On the removed engine unscrew and remove the pallet, then the piston complete with crankshaft is removed from the motor.
